I've read the threads and watched the videos about the Avantgrand. I finally went and tried one last week and am seriously considering selling my Steinway K upright for a N2. I have a very small house and a grand is out of the question.

Before my K I owned a Yamaha Electric grand CP-70B which fit in house. After some years I got tired of the sound and decided to get an upright. After checking out many I decided on a 20 year old K. It sounds great and plays great for an upright but now I'm finding limitations with the action and after trying N3 I was certainly impressed with the action. The sound was also impressive but it's still a digital.

If I make this change, I'm not sure how I'll feel in 6 months or longer without an acoustic.

Maybe the people who live without an acoustic cause they now own an Avantgrand can share their feelings on this subject to help me understand how it feels to turn the power on to practice. I play mostly jazz.

Question 36521: Do you have "convenient" access to acoustic pianos outside of the home? This will help the AG guys better to answer your question.

I am considering getting an N3 as well but I have "half the week access" to acoustic pianos.

Take it away guys!

Regulating an upright action is much easier than regulating a grand action. Have you ever had your K regulated? That may be the main difference you are noticing.

My K is a great upright. I love holding chords and listening to the dance of the overtones from it's wonderful soundboard. The action is still vertical compared to the long pivot of the N's action.

If you have not done any regulation to the action, that will make more of a difference than any of the geometry, or that it is a vertical action versus a grand action. What is more, the same thing will happen to the N's action if you do not maintain it.

If the hammers are not worn on the K, then what you need is adjustment of the capstans and let-off, perhaps checking the backchecks. That should be between an hour and two hours work. If the hammers are worn, it will need a bit more work. A grand action, like the N's, will need spring and drop adjustments, as well.
