I posted this announcement in the "New Faust Harrison Piano Center" thread, but it seems to have gotten buried there. I wanted to let everyone know about this amazing new art exhibit that we're hosting in White Plains and also to start a semi-new Caption Contest. Semi-new in that we had a contest with a somewhat similar sculpture about a year ago. In that contest, as in this one, we're looking for a clever title for the sculpture.

The prize for the best title will be an accolade and a gold star. If it's really good, perhaps the artists will adopt it.

There are some really good titles here. I'm impressed. But I'd like to see more.

Action Figure is very clever.

I love Hard Felt Shanks for the Memories.

Pianopede is good but maybe a bit too obvious. HMMM. How about Octioctopede?

This reminds me of something that happened a couple of decades ago when I was teaching a course at Vassar College.

One of my students had serious difficulty remembering things so I instructed him in the use of mnemonic devices as a way to address his problem. Basically, I constructed a system of mnemonies for him to use as memory aids. They were a complete success. Within a matter of weeks, his ability to remember all sorts of things was vastly improved.

At the end of the semester, he sent me a note that read:

Dear Professor Faust, Please accept my heartfelt thanks for the mnemonies.

For the Steinway fans: Ex-"O"-skeleton

For the Lead Belly fans: Good Night Trireme
(yeah, it's more like a galley, but I couldn't help it.)

Bessel,

Ex-"O"-skeleton is fantastic. thumb An incredible inter-play of words and concepts. But it probably wouldn't work for the New Yorker. Their editors and readers surely know what an exoskeleton is, but how many of them would have any idea what an ex-"O" is?

I also like your use of the word "Trireme" (new to me; I had to look it up), but I wonder if we can find a way to use it as a sculpture title, rather than as a title for a song.

I'm surprised you didn't suggest "Besselbug". smile

Because it looks like one:
"Trilobite con brio"

(substitute your favorite musical term if you wish; another might be "Trilobite col legno", but that strays from piano...)

Native Headdress from the 18th Century Eye-voor-ee Tribe found in the Estonian Highlands (cousins to the Weeluv-ren-err tribe), cultivated from Baltic Sea whalebones.

This one has been bothering me for a while. I finally figured it out.

It shouldn't be:

"hard felt shanks for the memories".

It should be:

"hard felt shanks for sea anemones".
