I'm a technician in Toronto, ON. looking to restore a Wing and Son upright from around the turn of the 20th century. I'm specifically interested in restoring the elaborate pedal mechanism. It's a five-pedal instrument and still has all the trap-work and rods, but neither of the two horizontal bars. I can find a small amount of information about these bars, but I'd love it if anybody could tell me exactly what they consisted of and what sounds they are purported to have created. I'd love to duplicate something resembling the original parts if I can.
Thanks in advance for any info or advice anyone might have.

I believe the horizontal bars mentioned are the ones up top perhaps? If this is the case one was a muting bar, and the other was a rinky-tink or mandolin attachment.

For the five pedals beginning from the right side;

There is the damper sustain pedal, which holds the dampers open.
Next is the muting pedal with one of the missing horizontal bars. This was 3”x 5/16 flat stock hardwood with a strip of felt attached at the bottom edge. When the pedal is used the bar lowers in front of the hammers and cuts the sound down below 60db.

Next would be the mandolin attachment that functioned in the same way as the previously mentioned bar. Instead of a felt strip on the bottom edge this one had buckskin strips and each strip had a rivet at the end the hammer connected with against the strings for a particular sound.

Both of these pedals should have a notch cut into the cabinet so that the pedal can be moved horizontally into the notch and be held in place there.

The next pedal would be the soft pedal (Dolce pedal?)which moved the action rail forward for a different touch control.

Now the fifth pedal operated a series of bells if I recall correctly; I just don’t know the configuration as I can’t see the setup, but that is primarily the function of the system. Your fun is to find the correct pedal for the right job….

In Toronto, Ontario? You’re about to get snow I think……

Be seeing you…..

I made a special request. Just north of you in Sudbury this week I think….some a month ago just below James Bay.

We had an early frost here over the last weekend.
