My son loves to compose. He composes when he is supposed to be practicing. He composes for school projects. He composes constantly. His style ranges from classically based to blues.

He uses a non-electric piano, Sonar for Midi compositions and he hand -writes his scores, but that is time consuming. I would love to encourage him to write out more of his compositions and to actually submit them to some competitions for the fun of it and to get him to really perfect them. I think he might use any prize to help himself buy an electronic keyboard.

He is 14 (8th grade). Any suggestions.

Also, for more advanced composers out there, the Seattle Symphony has a nice Asian-inspired music composition competition. Deadlines are coming up soon though.

What kind of suggestions are you looking for? I mean you want info about composing, about 'electronic keyboards', about Sonar, about how to notate scores in a better way???...
