But to answer the specific question this time... cheapest model with arguably reasonably-acoustic feeling keys would be the Casio CDP-100, but they are not the "most" acoustic feeling keys. Cheapest digital with actions that better approach the feel of a real piano would probably be Yamaha P155 or CP33 if you prefer acoustics with heavier feeling keys; Roland FP-7F if you prefer acoustics with lighter feeling keys. Cheapest and best-feeling are somewhat contradictory, it depends how much you're willing to compromise. The cheapest board with the best feeling keys (to take your subject line literally) would probably be the Yamaha Avantgrande N1, being the cheapest of that line.

In the inexpensive. I'd have to suggest the Korg SP250. Very realistic to me. Get the impression of a little klunky. But realistic. In my opinion...more so than a P90. EDIT: I would not be unhappy with a P90. But then. I rather like my CDP-100. Liking it more and more as a midi controller. With it's great external sound system I have. Still would rather have the SP250 keys.

Nope... The SP250 has more resistance at the top then lets off. Feels more like actually moving a hammer on a real piano.

[quote=rnaple][quote=joeb84] your kidding right? actually you do have a point in that but i played that. isn't the sound kind of tinny or was it me? You might go back and change the settings on the sound. I forget exactly what they were. Might have been adjusted bad. Otherwise I find the sound on it as not bad. Not real good, but not bad. Some DP's I can't stand the piano sound.

Yamaha CP33. BUT(!) as with all DPs, beware! Any DP might fool your ears and fingers when it comes to volume/dynamics/overall loudness. By that I mean: although the CP33 is a class in itself, when I play on an acoustic (say upright, not grand) there is a difference in terms of tonality and the way I hit the keys. It took some time to realize: with the headphones on, I can adjust the volume and even the touch of my DP to fit my needs via headphones. When playing on a real instrument physical factors are given and fixed so the way I touch the keys on my DP differs to the way I have to hit them on say an upright to get the same loudness and such. Needless to say it affects dynamics and timbre changes so all I'm saying is that be cautious when practicing even on the CP33 or alike because you might become 'lazy' in some ways on the dynamics/volume department which is going to be surprising when one sits in front of a real piano and tries to reproduce the same pieces which would normally be a no-brainer on the DP...

What has the sound got to do with the question posed? Stupid question IMHO, no acoustic piano feels the same anyway, and everyone is going to give their own personal opinion. Try a PX130/330, FP-4, P85, P90, MP6, FP-7F, K250, CA63, N1, etc.. What's it for, and what's the budget?

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense to ask for the best action and the cheapest price because those are two conflicting goals. One needs to be stated as a constraint. For example "best piano action under $1000."

Quite so, gv. If the question is not sensibly constrained, then the "piano" I saw yesterday at Target would qualify as cheapest with the most acoustic feeling... drum roll ... Yamaha's $200 DGX- model. Its keys had genuine springs for a genuine piano touch and feel!

There are quite a few balanced hammer ones that you can get under $1,000 that are quite good with a nice sampled piano sound. Are you only looking for new, or would you settle for used VINTAGE model from 10 years ago? Also, would you consider a good Synth with piano action and sound. I used to own a Yamaha S80 before I owned an S90. Great sounds and pads that can be added to the piano sound. This is a good price for an S80 that looks in great shape below. This would be a better option than a P90 or a cheap casio as I do believe the piano sound is better. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-S80-Music...=item58905cb3aeI think you should check out this link, it has some good models reviewed and under $2,000 http://azpianonews.blogspot.com/2011/01/review-yamaha-p155-roland-fp7f-kawai.html

If you just want to play piano, the cheapest solution may be a midi controller and software piano rather than a digital piano.
I use the Studiologic SL-990xp, which has the same Fatar key bed as their more expensive VMK models and can be got for less than $400. As a midi controller it is barely functional, but you can't get a more realistic key bed on a digital piano for less than $1,000.
Assuming you have a computer and some decent speakers, you need another $100 or so for midi/usb cables and converters and a decent pedal, and a software piano like Pianoteq Play or Alicia Keys, both around $99.

I just cast my vote for the Yamaha P200 in another post, but that was for the quality of the sound.
If you want a very authentic piano action, you must check out the Yamaha P series. Their older P200 is actually the best. I've replaced the entire action of my P200 here with their new upgraded action, and it's a beast. You'll pay for it with your back because the keyboard is so heavy, but your hands will love you. Very similar to a Yamaha Grand piano action feel (Have a Yamaha C7 Grand here in the studio as well)
