While in Liverpool last week I came across a book called "Learn to Play Piano in Six Weeks or Less" and although I didn't buy it I gained enough from it to realise that classical notation could be substituted for 'shell forms' that made the left hand much more easy to manage. I presume there is some coverage of this technique here?

It looks like he uses chord theory, which I'm a big believer in. Helps the understanding of music rather than just rote learning. I believe music, and playing it, is simpler than most teachers admit. It's not what you learn, but how you apply it to the keyboard. I'm curious to see how/if he applies this to written music.

Joe, did you come at the book as a beginner or did you already have some piano knowledge?

That sounds like the lead sheet approach. Scott Houston does that over here on PBS, and also has a book.

I agree with Brian; a chord-based understanding can be really helpful. The tricky part comes with integrating that with reading music and the millions of variations that occur in written scores.
