Hello,
I am a 21 years old college student who just recently decided to start playing piano again (I played for almost a year when I was around 8 or 9, but due to my childish impatience quit playing). But having played for a bit when I was younger I think allowed me to get some basics down (I'm not really sure). But anyways I am not sure how to approach playing from here.
What I've been doing is just playing pieces that I like and since I cannot really read the notes that well I end up just memorizing the whole songs. This is to the extent where for some parts during a song I would have no conscious idea of what I'm doing (basically just playing with instinct) thus sometimes after a while unable to even play the part with just one hand. This works fine for pieces I'm playing specifically but not sure if this can turn out harmful in the future.
Anyways as of now I can play Chopin's prelude in E minor,
Summer by Joe Hisaishi, and I'm currently working on
Hana-bi by Joe Hisaishi.
Ultimately though my dream is to play Debussy's Arabesque no. 1 which I am learning slowly little by little while I play my other (easier) pieces.
I know for a fact that at my current level I cannot play the piece properly (perhaps I can eventually manage the keys but not capture the flow). But I'm quite passionate about playing it, even if it is to be in the long-run. First of all does anyone have any tips given my situation? Secondly, is my approach reasonable? Or should I just focus almost all my attention on playing Arabesque instead of doing it little by little on the side.
At the moment, I play at the pianos on my campus every now and then at a sort of random pace. Sometimes it would be for 30 minutes, other times I would play for 5 hours straight. In general, I just play for fun because it relaxes me but of course I want to improve.
