I had to do some fairly aggressive acoustic treatment for my music room, but that worked pretty well and the piano doesn't make the tinnitus worse. There are lots of loud noises that do worsen it, though. Traffic, especially when driving with the windows open, or when riding my bike. Common foam earplugs from the drugstore help a lot for that stuff, as long as I remember to have them in the car and daypack.

Our local piano concert series seriously aggravated it. Big Steinway D in a small hall. I don't go anymore.

It's possible to prevent hearing loss caused by environmental noise, but once it's gone there's no getting it back. If you're just beginning to have a problem, it's a good time to take some special care.

It looks like the topic name should be ''Anyone here without tinnitus?''
I do not personally know any tinnitus sufferer, and everybody gave me strange looks when I told them my ears are ringing all by themselves, but it seems pretty common. I wish everyone good luck and strong nerves smile

Musician earplugs

I use these. They work pretty well. I also take them to movies these days, as it seems the movie houses are louder than ever. If I am going to play with my piano open for extended periods, I will put them as well. They come with a compact carrying case, which is nice.
Has anyone tried the more expensive ones?

PS,
Mine seems to come from the left ear. There is hearing loss in that ear as well. An easy test is to rub your fingers together close to your ear, one at a time.

I haven't noticed any foods or pretty much anything at all that makes any major difference. I have noticed that when I'm particularly bothered by it, it has usually to do with some kind of anxiety. Generally, if I deal with the anxiety, then even though the sound is still there, I can sleep/work etc.

Some things that helped me deal with it include the fact that lots of highly functional people have it or have had it (Beethoven . . . ). Another thing that helps me is to think of it as analogous to the subtle visual 'snow' or 'white noise' you see when you close your eyes, and, when you look, also when they're open.

The very high pitches were the first for me -- near or above 20khz. Then came more mid-range tones which were not solid tones -- a bit like hearing beeping construction equipment in the distance (in fact, I thought for a while that there was actually construction going on in my neighborhood at night, but, distressingly, it turned out to be my tinnitus).

The latest -- and, marginally, worst -- began just a few months ago and it responds to (actual) sounds I hear. That is, it gets louder when there is something making sound. It's almost like an echo, but it is a single tone. As I hear sounds it kinda goes rrrrRRRRrrrrRRRRRRRRRrrrrrr. Only in my right ear . . .

I don't think the last tone came in response to loud sounds. It seemed to come out of nowhere, and began with a few very loud PBOOOOoooooooooo sounds that each lasted ten or twenty seconds, spread over about two days.

That's a lot of detail, but it's the story of what I've experienced.

I've learned to be thankful for any hearing at all . . . Needless to say, I avoid loud noises.

Lastly, it might sound odd, but I wear earplugs not only at night, but (when not at work) during a lot of the day. I found that some of my discomfort was not at the tinnitus, but just noise in general. Plus, I've found that to whatever extent I learn to live with tinnitus with earplugs in, then I notice it less when they're out.
Interesting that you mentioned visual snow...I was having a lot of trouble with tinnitus a year or so ago sometimes so loud it woke me up. It eventually calmed by itself but did not go away. I think I've had at least a little most of my life. Anyway, a few months after the tinnitus improved my visual snow, which I've always had a little of but not bothersome, became more obvious and at this point is absolutely aggravating. Its like I've traded one for the other. Just when I was getting decent at reading sheet music I found myself avoiding it because its hard to look at. Everything on the page looks like its vibrating. I can't tell which line or space the note is on for sure without taking a long close look at it.I've read that both conditions can be part of a migraine if you get the ones with auras.

I'll figure it out eventually.
Until then you may want to keep a safe distance.

Jazzwee, how are we meant to have noticed that without being inside your head? lol.

Its interesting that migraine has just been brought up, I certainly suffer terrible migraines, i wonder if anyone else does who has tinnitus? Certainly certain foods do not help migraine sufferers.
Also I can avoid migraines by not allowing myself to get dehydrated, but if I fail at that and a migraine starts, thats it, blurred vision, pukesville and go to the dark room and demand totall silence and pray for sleep to come..

Actually, I hear it louder one ONE side of my head smile

But I wasn't certain. So when I put the masking sound on one ear, it lessened it's effect.

Maybe you have a different type than mine since mine is related to permanent hearing loss and from what I gather, the sensors in my eardrum are locked in the "on" position.

But until I did this little test, I actually did think it's just one global sound in my head.

I do not have migraines as such - I get headaches often, but anti-migraine pills do not work.
My doctor told me the headaches might be caused by problems with cervical vertebrae. And from what I've read, so might be tinnitus! I am definitely going to try some exercises, can't hurt ;-)
I wouldn't wonder really. Since I was little, my hobbies always have involved devastating my neck/back (piano, computer, model building, reading)

I've had Tinnitus for around 12 years, at first it worried me, but I eventually got to accept it. Thankfully mine isn't permanent, it usually comes on if I'm tired, it's there when I awake but goes away when I get moving, shower, etc.. My Dr said it is just age related, no cure. As said in an earlier reply, it's usually more noticeable after I see anything written about it, like now.

Yes. I've had it for about two years now. I attribute it to 25 years or so of working in rock bands. It's pretty constant. I haven't worked out the frequency but for anyone old enough to remember the sound you used to hear when you stood behind an old TV,it's just like that.

Good description (for those of us old enough to remember).
I've had mine for at least 10 years, probably longer. It's more pronounced when I'm tired.
I had to learn to ignore it when I tune pianos, otherwise I might think it was an upper partial of the notes :-)

That is so odd that you mentioned the old telly noise.... when I was a teenager ( like twenty odd years before I ever got tinnitus) I would go into some folks houses and litterally my ears would be assaulted by that high pitched buzzing, sometimes it was so loud and severe, I would comment like "How can you stand that?"

Just some folks tellys seemed extremely bad, I could not have lived with one of those.... Now you got me wondering, way back then, I was hearing something that they definately did not ( otherwise they would have sledghammered the telly to pieces!)

That being the case, I was hearing a very loud frequency high up that they didnt... but that was not in my head, it was real. So, now that I am hearing something similar that is in my head all these years later, I am wondering if there is some connection....

I don't think there is really a cure for tinnitus. But there are, at least in my experience, ways to lessen it and keep it from getting worse.

Mine is exacerbated by acid reflux. I have no proof, just my own observations. So if you have it or suspect that you have it, get that checked out.

I also use musician's earplugs, the ones from Etymotic Research. I don't really use them while playing the piano, unless it is a particularly loud piece. I ride the bus to work, and that is where they are very useful. It's an express bus, the size of a tour bus, and what with the engine noise and the air blowers, I would get off the bus and my ears would be ringing and very sensitive to sound. So I started wearing the earplugs on the bus and things improved quite a bit.

So be aware of the sound environment that is around you. There may be noises other than piano that are causing your problems.

Tinnitus here too since I was a teenager... I think from playing my upright loud MANY hours a day... than car racing :D, working in and as support to a machine shop... incurable, I deal with it and sometimes drives me nuts even when playing on the digital with headphones and really quiet...

I can feel it only when I'm trying to sleep in a quiet room or playing hanon.

The car is a surprisingly noisy place, even with the windows up. If I turn the radio up so I can hear it, it aggravates the ear ringing after a trip.

Airplanes are another problematic spot. Loud cabin noise.

If your ringing doesn't clear up within a few weeks, Hrochan, it would be a good idea to see an audiologist. You might google up some websites to learn some more. Many common medications, including OTC remedies as well as prescriptions, are known to aggravate tinnitus, especially if you take more than one medicine. There is a list in the PDR (any doctor or library will have it).

Yep, I've got it too but I have my doubts about food and even loud sound causes. Last I looked a few years ago, real science has no idea what tinnitus really is since it is created in the brain and not at the ear. There is no "sound" to hear yet some perceive it. I know a ton of musicians who all played in rock bands in the 70's, 80's 90's without protection and MOST don't have tinnitus yet I know there are others who get it without the expected exposure to really loud sounds. I have it and I deal with it. If I didn't have it, I'd have something else to deal with like why I keep being drawn to instruments that favor big hands (cello, piano, electric bass) even though I have these small and not particularly limber hands.

Tinnitus sucks. I think I will use it as an excuse to replace my last tube TV......after all.....that tube is contributing to my tinnitus. So is the whinny little 4 cylinder car......a nice new 680HP fire breathing V8 Mustang with a low growl should do the trick!

My tinnitus showed up suddenly at age 50. Worse in one ear and when I am tired. I think I spent to much time driving loud tractors when I was young. Have found that I have to keep the piano lid closed and am still particularly sensitive to some high notes.

http://www.hyperacusis.net

Another PW member pointed me to this site, which is better than most I have seen. Tinnitus is a special case of hyperacusis (or a problem that can be associated with it).

This site is free, non-commercial, and in the various links which are on its front page gives a good summary about what is, and is not, currently known. The PDR list of drugs that can aggravate tinnitus is provided as a PDF on one of the links. Another page gives the dB chart which summarizes the power of various sounds, from silence, through ordinary safe volumes, to dangerous, painful, and ear-damaging sound levels.

I hope this may be of help.

It may help to know that there are a lot of FAMOUS PEOPLE who suffer from Tinnitus. I like the reference to Vincent van Gogh.
