Because it's the holiday season, I started looking into the FAO Schwarz piano from "Big" -- just out of curiosity.

How much would you suppose a real one costs? $5,000? $10,000 tops?

At 3:28 in this entertaining video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8Yi6ITZtHg
the price is stated as $15,000 in 1986 and $250,000 in 2008.

There's something called a "Monster Piano" that looks less fun (because in the videos I've seen, it doesn't light up). The five octave version will run you $21,000, but there's a 30% educational discount that can be had. See http://www.monsterpiano.com/whats-a-monster-piano/

For now, we're sticking with the poor man's version at our house. They can be picked up on sale for around $70:

Lol. Those look fun. Even the little one. Gonna be a while before your kid can play it decently, though, right?

True enough. Since he mostly "army crawls" at 8.5 mos., his improvisations tend toward the chromatic. But I've been wondering all morning How hard would it be to build one of these things? Would it even reach $1,000 in parts? If only I had a buddy who owned a body shop. I figure I need to sort out what sort of resin I want the keys to be (not too slick? but you have to be able to do plenty of glissandi). How do the pressure plates work (put them at the corners, I guess)? How do I get even lighting of each key? And, finally, Pianoteq, GarageBand or a software synth?
