I'm interested in how people think about this song. Key centers or anything else that simplifies the thought process.

you might have to elaborate but it sounds like what i do when i improvise. (i pick a song, find the chord progression and go from there.

Here's a link to Coltrane's solo neatly written out, he's outlining the changes very accurately:

He's mostly doing arpeggios, or that 4 note motif he was fond of: 1-2-3-5 or some pentatonic variation of it (5-3-2-1) (5-6-9-10). He also uses bits of scale passages. It's very similar to his Giant Steps and Countdown solos, but I recall those use more enclosures. McCoy solos look similar.

I've been spending quite a bit of quality time with this tune lately - moderately slow tempo, trying to discover pivot tones (common tones), trying to avoid patterns as much as I can (as much as I love Coltrane's solo). I'll let you know how it comes out in a couple of years wink!

Why would you try to "avoid patterns" ? Lines are shapes (and patterns are shapes that outline the chords). What do you mean then by "common tones"? Practice/analyze this and then mess it all up. That's when the fun starts:

Jazz+, I mean tones that can be held across the barline through a chord change. I'm basically trying to insure that I hear things, instead of relying on scale or chord knowledge (in the visual pattern sense and/or finger pattern sense)......which may be for naught when I start practicing in tempo(!)

Hey, great website, transcriptions......
