I am in search of a good used piano. I have been looking at medium grands for awhile, but for reasons that are too long and too boring to discuss on this forum I am leaning towards an upright. I have a budget of approximately 7k and I was wondering if there is anything in particular that you would recommend. Yamaha U3 seems to be one of the top choices, but lately I have seen a Yamaha YUS-5 that I would really like to try…2008 model sold from a private seller for $8300! Is it worth the extra money (at that point I would love to get a baby-medium grand, though). If buying a car can be compared to a checkers game…buying a good used piano is probably like playing chess…
Anyway, all good advices are welcome. Thanks!

I played both models -- new on the showroom floor -- in a recent piano quest that ended (for now) when I bought a Yamaha AvantGrand N2. I liked the U3 a lot, but I liked the YUS5 even more. All other things being equal, that would be my inclination.

Of course, since we're talking pre-owned instruments here, I'm sure you'll get an opinion from a good tech, etc.

I read a few old reviews on this site and, in general, the YUS5 seems to be of slightly higher quality than the U3, with richer and clearer sound. Is it reasonable to offer 5k for a 2008 YUS5 model from a private seller? I am just trying to get an idea of what the appraised value might be (assuming that it is in great conditions). I found several U3s (some with a warranty) for about $3500 + tax...but they are all from the 1980s. Re-thanks!

Poli, if I had the option of buying a 2008 model YUS5 over a new one, I would've bought the used one. In my area, most of the used pianos were of the 20 years plus vintage which is why I bought a new YUS5.
