It has been several years. Seems there was always another need for funds. Just ordered a Yamaha P155 and the L140 furniture stand to go with it. All at a 15% discount from the often quoted online prices. Not bad.

Been reading this forum for years absorbing information. You know, it is a tough choice to select that first piano having no experience at all. But for a very long time I’ve liked the Kawai’s, even going back to the MP4. I figure a few years down the road I’ll get that Kawai, most likely a stage piano. But for now, feel the Yamaha P155 will be more than adequate. A good choice, all things considered.

Over time I’ve collected some method and other instruction books. They’ve been collecting dust but I knew someday I would put them to use. Yes, I will be an adult beginner in his 60’s. And I will be starting out without a teacher.

But I do have the following:

Alfred’s Adult All In One

US School Of Music ( 96 home study lesson course )

US School Of Music Practical Finger Control. Some time ago I started this, three weeks I believe – harder than I thought it would be. A 24 week course. 2x a day. 7 days a week. You can spend an hour a day just doing this. Although your fingers gain in strength the main idea is coordination between brain and muscle.

Mastering Piano Technique by Seymour Fink – Have both the video (VHS) and the book.

20 Lessons In Keyboard Choreography by Seymour Bernstein

Super Sight-Reading Secrets by Howard Richman

Several books by Keith Snell on Fundamentals Of Piano Theory and also Scale Skills.

Fundamentals Of Piano Practice, 2nd Edition by Chuan C. Chang.

Just realizing the above (on books) is probably of little interest in this section of the forum. I apologize.

Anyways, I do want to thank everyone that contributes to this forum. Really! I have read so many posts over the years. I learned something from all of you in this digital piano section.
Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences.

Les

Congrats on your new Yamaha Les! The P155 is a popular board, and looks pretty stylish with the accompanying stand.

It sounds like you've really got yourself set-up with lots of learning and practise material. But please don't forget to have fun playing your piano too! wink

Best of luck!

Cheers,
James

Congratulations on taking that big first step!!

You picked a nice piano. It's one I may also end up with especially if I can't get my hands on a Kawai MP6 to test. Like you I like both pianos very
Much.

You sound like you have tons if materiAls to
Start with! Have fun!!

Hi Les, congratulations on your P155 purchase from another 60 yr old beginner with a couple of years initially self taught (I started with a P85 and nearly went with the P155 recently; I now have a lesson every three weeks).

This may be a bit off topic for which I apologise, but do also check out the reviews of John Meffen's Improve your piano playing on Amazon and for motivation Charles Cooke's recently republished Playing Piano for Pleasure is great. Meffen is very practical, concise and IMO hard to beat.

James,
Yes, I will remember to have fun also.

Zoe,
Yeah, I liked the MP6 very much also. But, the P155 can last me several years easily. I think will be excellent for my needs. By the time I’m ready to upgrade... one can only wonder what the new digital pianos will be like.

Colin,
I seriously considered the P95. Thanks for the tip on John Meffen’s book. I put it on my list. My biggest challenge right now will be putting a study / practice plan in place. The piano is for Christmas so I have a little time to put it in place.

Les
