Here's what I think: you described this music incorrectly. Dunno much about IP, but it probably qualifies as an original work loosely based on that source. It's *not* a 'version' of it.

It's a computer playing a virtuoso paraphrase on Beethoven.

The whole point of a virtuoso paraphrase is for a person to showcase their technical and musical skill. When a computer plays a virtuoso paraphrase, it comes off as artificial and uninteresting.

As a compositional exercise, it's undergraduate level arranging. It gets the notes and some interesting figurations down, but it's not something that has much commercial or artistic appeal.

The bar for this kind of thing is set pretty high. By contrast, I find this kind of thing far more interesting, both visually and aurally:

When the music gets more complicated(after the first few seconds) are all the notes being hit at the right time and place by the balls to be consistently matching the music?

Thump, thump. What does this "noise" have to do with the lovely and fun to play 3rd movement of the Pathetique?

Yep...the videos are created with software that coordinates the MIDI information with the animation. Animusic created the software that does this - check out the behind the scenes videos, it's very cool stuff!

I've seen this done before and I'm sure the source is lined up properly, but in this youtube video, the hits get off by a small amount.

I really, really liked this. I usually can't stand this kind of thing. But here it was done with taste, subtlety and respect. One of the best combinations of "classical" and jazz that I've heard in a long time. Thanks for posting.

I thought the link in the OP was horrendous.

Of course you do, stores. There's good music and bad music. This is good. Most of these kinds of things are bad, but this is good. And, as I said, she treats Beethoven with respect.

This is why my first reaction to the above rendition was horror, but as I listened, I found it kind of nice - clever, humorous and energetic. It's not Beethoven, but it's musical. I can just imagine my teacher's reaction if I played this for him! sick

IMO, the OP's piece is a hack job filled with lots of monotonous pounding.

Sounds like video game music from the 80's. Tolerable, but not memorable. For a moment it sounded like The Legend of Zelda.

Wow... so far, we all basically don't like the stomping machine-like take on the Pathetique, and basically do like the jazzy canine-entrancing take on the Waldstein.

I just want to point out a fragile moment of agreement and harmony, rare on Piano World, so noteworthy.

J, you're so right! This is turning into a monumental point in PW history! And not only that, Stores also enjoys what the rest of us do!

Yes, the work in the waldstein is quite clever... (I actually did enjoy off beat the notes when playing waldstein but never ever ever to that a nice extent...).

That pooh is weird though... And she's a tiny bit weird as well, but who cares when she can do that! smile

Original Video was totally indifferent and rather boring for me... sorry...

I didn't even bother listening to the first link after reading others' description. Should anyone like my take on it I'll be happy to lend it an ear.

Another no for the OP, loved the Waldstein. A little reminiscent of Gabriela Montero, I think.

The OP sounds like a plodding, Computer, MIDI "interpretation."

Moreover, the animation is disappointingly literal.

This one, with a better performance of a better piece, is far more interesting to me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6s49OKp6aE

And I love both the performance and visual accompanyment of this video of the Lutoslawski piano sonata:

Fair enough. In order to promote my vision, I saw it as: The OP asks Piano World what we think of something, and Piano World responds, miraculously, in a single voice.

Not sure which one you're referring to.

I listened to the Pathetique-thing once... or more like half a time. That was enough for me to form a stern judgement.

I listened to the jazz-pop Waldstein several times, like five over the course of the day. I still love it. My only wish is that she had carried out the rest of the exposition, instead of just returning to the opening material at the end.

That makes sense, too - didn't occur to me.

Well, anyway, illusions can be pleasant, while they last. I kind of worry about that "single voice" thing, though - to me, it seems a bit scary, oddly enough.

The Waldstein. The Pathetique gave me instant seizures.
The Waldstein clip is obviously "better" but it did not withstand the test of a second run..
