My husband knows a lady who is selling her Bush Gerts upright piano and she'll sell it to us for $500. The serial # is 64896. Is there anything you can tell us about this piano (we know almost nothing about pianos but would really like to get one). I know it's an antique and my concern is that because it's so old it might have a lot of major problems. Any info. would be helpful. Thanks a bunch.

The serial number listings in my copy of the Pierce Piano Atlas (10th edition) are numerically out of order. I would assume that the piano is from the early 1920s, based on the Atlas. I am not a piano professional, but it is more than possible that the piano does not have much (if any) value. This is based on my experience parting with a 1911 Leckerling upright, a wonderful piano but without any monetary value. (I gave it away.)

This piano is 85 years old. You can get pianos which are similar for free. Pass on this. If you have $500 to spend, buy a studio upright from the 1960s or newer. You will save yourself a lot of trouble.
