An article on WHYY's news site today talks about an interesting piano modification, to create new types of sounds on the piano http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/art-entertainment-sports/item/30675They use electromagnets to vibrate the strings, either independently or along with hammer strikes. It sounds like an organ or an electronic synthesizer. The device, according to the article, can be installed on any piano without permanently making any modifications.

Wow, very interesting. I didn't know about this and it's going on in my back yard. Thanks.

Interesting, but the sound isn't my cup of tea. I guess lot's more could come from this tho.

Discrete installation! This sounds like a spin off of the self tuning piano concept that was being discussed a couple years back. Does anyone know how that's going?
