Is anyone familiar with the Messingschlager G-82 (baby) grand piano? I see one advertised with a broken casette player. What's a decent price range for this piano. Aslo would a broken casette player (electronically not functioing) affect the piano itself? Piano is 15 years old

Well I am asking questions on this forum to make sure I don't get shot down by one of them in 2011. But, seriously maybe some of the more knowlegeable bloggers can give me a crash course as I'm trying to purchase a decent piano for my son as his teacher wants him to upgrade from his Yamaha Digital Grand.
Can someone give me a general idea of the relationship between Messingschlager - Hyundai - Young Chang pianos. I know they are all Korean, and I beleive there is some connection between the manufaturing of all three makes of piano. I am looking for a used baby grand anywhere from 5' to 5' 10". I understand the quality of these Korean pianos don't match say a Kawai or Yamaha, but I can give a little on the "sound quality" if the piano is durable and can hold a tune. So, if anyone out there can take the time to run my through what you know on this subject, I'd be very appreciative. Thanks

Hi Ruby, and welcome to the Piano World Forums!
I've never heard of a Messingschlager, but I have heard of Hyundai. I've never played a Hyundai, but I don't see why it wouldn't be a decent piano, if you like the sound and touch of it. Some of the techs and dealers here don't speak too highly of the Hyundai, but some don't speak too well of most brands they don't sell.
The Young Chang seems to have a reputation of being a decent piano, but some here don't speak too well of YC either.
I suppose it boils down to what is available in your area... I'd definately recommend having any pre-owned piano you are looking at inspected by a qualified piano tech before purchase.
Good luck and keep us informed of your search.
Rick

No need to appologize, we all need to maintain a sense of humor. I neglected to add Samick into the Korean manufacturers. I have heard people link Samick and Hyundai. I agree, if the sound and feel are ok, then chances are the paino will be ok, however, I have been reading bad reviews on the Yamaha, I believe model GH-1B, saying it can't hold a tune. Things like that concern me as they are not evident when you are trying out the piano prior to purchasing it.

"Messingschlager" That's about as easy to pronounce as some Korean words isn't it? Sorry, couldn't resist!

ClsscLib - good one. That was my laugh of the day. Rick, just because someone thinks that the touch and tone of a given piano is OK is no assurance whatsoever that it is a decent piano. Hyundai is know to be way down at the bottom of the barrel, at least in the (real) piano world. Buyer beware, as always! RudyV, I'm not sure what the attached broken cassette player is all about, perhaps an old player system? The price range for any used piano depends on a number of factors, including brand, (in your case unknown = not so good), age, amount of use, and very important: condition. As we don't know the condition, the range could start at zero and go up to a certain percentage of its new cost. You can find out more about this in the Piano Buyer Guide on the left margin of every page here. But in the end, you need to have a technician check it out for its condition. I agree, if the sound and feel are ok, then chances are the paino will be ok, however, I have been reading bad reviews on the Yamaha, I believe model GH-1B, saying it can't hold a tune. .. I think it is safe to say that any Yamaha product will be far superior to a pseudo-German-christened no-name Korean piano.

Bob Messingschlager Was a retailer, I think out west. Ordered piano's with his name wherever he could get a deal. Most likely China. There was a Cassette that made pianos into players. Only around for a few years. Broke down lots. There's nothing wrong with Chinese used piano's. However this one may be too old. The early Chinese left much to be desired. Kilning was pretty bad. Lot's of green wood. Buy Chinese, but try to stay at least ten years or younger.
