Hi, I am going to look at a used Baldwin 6000. I think that it is a 1999, but am not sure. Could someone check the serial # for me to let me know? 0477763 I can't find my copy of the Pierce Piano Atlas since we moved. :-( Also could anyone give me their opinion as to what price range a 6000 of that era should go for assuming it is in very good shape. They are asking $6,250. I would love to hear any comments/opinions about the 6000. Thanks!!

I love those pianos. Their sound is huge, professional and stable. Lot and lots of power and finesse if in good condition.

I auditioned a current (Dongbei) Baldwin model that's somewhat similar to the old 6000. It's called a B-49 and is only a bit shorter than the 6000 and has a ton of soundboard and string-length crammed in there. Big sound, big robust piano. I liked it and really wanted to love it but the tone just didn't have the warmth I was looking for.

Anyway, my point is those new B-49's are going for similar-to-lower prices than your quote on the 6000. Not to say the larger, older model isn't worth quite a bit more than the B-49 but I personally would take some convincing to pay that much for one even in tip-top condition.

Thanks Brent, but I am not sure how comparable a Baldwin 6000 from circa 2000 (made in USA) is to a Brand new Baldwin 252. I wonder if the price for the 6000 new back in 2000 was more than the price of a brand new 252 (made in China) today.

I don't know historical pricing but the real question is how much piano for the dollar one versus the other gives if bought today. I suspect they're both nice pianos but even used or Chinese that's a fair bit of dosh for an upright piano. Trouble is, darned if I know where to find anything that good any cheaper!

Probably just as well the tone of that B-49 wasn't what I was seeking...because I'd have probably gotten cold feet before splashing out six grand for it anyway. I have this irrational idea that there ought to be a great, full-size vertical piano out there for $4,000-4,500 or so. Seems a pipe dream.

FYI, the published list price for a Baldwin 6000 Ebony in Fall of 1999 was $9300.

Thanks Nick! Methinks that if I like the piano, no way I will offer $6k. A 12 year old upright should have depreciated at least by 50%. Or am I wrong?

First, I would confirm the year.

Second, the price I furnished which was published in the Ancott Directory would be similar to the PianoBuyer SMP back then. So the buyer should have received a discount from the full retail price.

The tone of this Model is certainly unique.

However, I always noticed that the hammers were rather small, similar in size to Baldwin's smaller vertical pianos.

You may want to pay attention to this if you are expecting this size of piano to have a really powerful tone. I have found it does not.
