Hello everyone! I was wondering, if you were to set an ABRSM grade on these pieces grade would you set them at?

Here are the pieces I had in mind:

Sonata D 959 Andantino 2nd movement (Schubert)
Impromptu op 90 no 3 (Schubert)
Impromptu op 90 no 2 (Schubert)
Moment musical op 94 no 4 (Schubert)
Moonlight sonata 3rd movement (Beethoven)
Nocturne op 27 no 2 (Chopin)

Cheers!

Sonata D 959 Andantino 2nd movement (Schubert) -- not that hard to just play the notes, but not easy to do musical justice, and the better pianist you are, the harder it is. smile
I think it defies a "grade."

Impromptu op 90 no 3 (Schubert) -- not as hard as the above

Impromptu op 90 no 2 (Schubert) -- easier than the above musically, harder to play the notes but not that hard

Moment musical op 94 no 4 (Schubert) -- tricky but not that hard to play the notes

Moonlight sonata 3rd movement (Beethoven) -- very hard unless you slow it way down, then it's not that hard

Nocturne op 27 no 2 (Chopin) -- not that hard to play the notes as long as you leave out "that measure." ha

Okay, and what if you rank these pieces from hardest to easiest? Here would my list be:

1. Moonlight 3rd movement
2. Andantino Sonata D 959 (Because of the middle section, isn't that one hard?)
3. Nocturne op 27 no 2
4. Moment Musical No 4
5. Impromptu op 90 no 3
6. Impromptu op 90 no 2

What do you think about this list? smile

As to 27/2, I think Chopin stuck that measure n just so we struggling intermediate types don't get too cocky.

Because I just want to know what piece to do next :P Of these pieces, I can play three. Impromptu op 90 no 3, Moment musical no 4 and Andantino D 959. I wonder if any of the other three pieces are at my standard, I am at the level of playing these three pieces, no more, no less. I wonder if the other three pieces mentioned are appropriate as "the next piece" to play at my standard?

I suspect he was laughing hysterically. Or at least smiling wryly. smile

Franz,

I think the best way to make that assessment is to take out the music and try playing it.

That's what I always think with these things.

Why are so many people interested in asking the gradings and rankings??

IMO it's like a line in the song "Doing What Comes Naturally," about how to tell "one sex from the other": "....all he had to do was look." smile

Although....as per what I said above, some pieces are way harder than meets the eye, like that Schubert slow movement -- but that kind of thing isn't what people usually mean when they ask how hard a piece is.

To Franz: But it's great that you're interested in all these pieces!

But the three pieces I play, are they easier than the three I want to play, or are they about the same or even easier?

Try them and find out!

It's virtually impossible to answer this question because there are certain technical and musical aspects that one person will find difficult which, for others, will be remarkably easy. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to definitively categorizing difficulties of pieces. Yes, "La Campanella" is more difficult than "Für Elise" but at some point one realizes that what is difficult for one may not be as difficult for everyone else.

I repeat : the easiest solution is to try them and see which one(s) suit(s) you.
