Dave told you to go up to 80? I think 69, 72 is good enough. Once you get used to playing find your way though the changes with ease, you can work on speed later. The trick about speed is the slice of pizza.

Thanks for It's you or no-one. I listened to it on you-tube and liked Freddie Hubbard's solo a lot.
It seems like a "long" standard to long, the first one I've come across with 4 different sections A B C D.

Re improv, Dave also told me 69-72 bpm. I'm pleased Dave told you that too as I thought he gave me that speed suggestion since I wasn't very good. But now I feel better
Today I did 72 bpm.
The reason I would love to achieve 80 bpm is that the head doesn't sound that good at 72 bpm.

I agree that Lesson 25 was a lot easier than Lesson 23 and 24 which both require the lifting of the hand for each pattern, if I recall correctly.
I'm still struggling with my challenge tempo of 144 bpm for Lesson 25. As you can hear, I'm swinging some of the triplets

Last night I watched the Gary Giddins 1 hour documentary on Bird.
Bird was awesome when he played Hot House with Dizzy and Dick. I think it's so hot that you can play with someone who played with Bird.
There must literally be only a handful of great cats still alive and performing who gigged with Bird. Actually Sonny Rollins is the only other I can think of.

Hi custard, that's a shame about the timing, but there are only so many parties a girl can fit into a Saturday night... We'll both be doing wild hanons next year!

This is awesome.
It's exciting to see you navigate these changes with such ease.
Pay attention to how many play that tunes and you'll see they don't play over the bar line as well as you just did. They stop and treat blocks of chords separately, or play in a very scalar way.
You were throwing arps all over the place up and down.
It shows you really have understood these changes.
That was totally at a new level.

Only two things I would say.
1. Swing the melody. Easiest way its to play along duke Ellington on youtube. The rhythms might be written odd in your book. Best to go to the source.
2. Do a quick recording and say slice of pizza as you play. When your line starts on an off beat, you say 'a slice of pizza'.
When you end your line on the beat, you say ' slice of pizza pie'
Accent the slice.

That's a great idea to play along with a recording to make sure I'm swinging the head. I've noticed that a lot of the recordings don't swing the B section as much, do you agree ?



I thought that I should always say "Slice of pizza" regardless of whether I start on an off-beat or on beat ?
I will have another try within the next few days and see what you think.

Knotty, the keyboard was the same. The recording was a Garageband file copied into iTunes and then copied back into Garageband and then back into iTunes. I accidentally erased the original. I'm still getting the hang of this.

Recording, for me, is a welcome exposure to performance anxiety, internal pressure, and temporary amnesia as I play to an internal mic. I choke the first few times, and then gradually make fewer mistakes until I find something that passes my less than exacting standards.

Cus, there was a big problem with the SD at 80 impov -you were playing all straight eights notes. Got to swing them amiga! The lines themselves were good, try it again with the swingin 1/8th this time..one way to make sure that you're using swing 1/8ths is to start improvising intentionally for a few measures with straight 1/8th, then switch to swing 1/8th so you can feel the difference..

Yeah that was naughty of me. I had the same problem of forgetting to swing during the period I was doing the progression exercises when there were too many scales to remember.
Whereas the changes in Take the A Train moved very slowly, the changes in Satin Doll seem to be like lightning.
