Hi Folks - I'm new here - thanks for what looks like a great forum.

I'm looking for a used studio upright for my daughters and just came across a Young Chang U121 from 1981. The asking price is $1195. The price is certainly attractive but I'm concerned about the age (piano described in "as new" condition). I've read about different periods of manufacture with YC, but I haven't quite figured out if there are periods to avoid.

This is a private sale and I'm told that the piano was last tuned about 3 years ago.
Is this a piano that I should investigate further at this price or should I keep looking.

Thanks.

btw - The age was determined by me given the number 8111156 from the back of the piano (did I get it right?).

That's not a bad starting price... Perhaps bring a friend or a piano teacher with you? If you like it, consider hiring a piano technician to inspect it for you.

Hi - Thanks for the reply. How does this piano compare with the Yamaha U1 which would be about three times the price used ? I had always thought that I would get a U1 when this time came (12 year old daughters have out grown the old wurlitzer spinet) but money is tight right now, and U1's don't seem to pop up for sale too often in my neighborhood.

Thanks

Well this YC should be quite an improvement over the spinet. I've read that YC has improved a lot over the years and today even their "lowest" lines are pretty decent. In other words, I have no clue what an 1981 YC would be like grin nor do I have a lot of experience with U1s of similar age.

I can tell you that my first piano was only a little better than your spinet and it served me very well until I left for college. Something in the "studio" category would've been much nicer, but I got by. So, if the U1 is too much money, then don't sweat it.
