Dave, thanks for the feedback.
To be honest, both of those were short things I came up with in a few hours when I was around 2 am a couple nights ago when I was a bit stoned. Didn't do much editing or revision and didnt spend much time on them. I like the musical kaleidoscope reference.
To answer your questions I'd have to give a few since I'm not sure if you meant broadly / in general, or with these specific pieces.
As far as these things, there was no real go beyond entertainment / boredom. They could eventually be turned into usable things, but for now were novelty. I know what you mean about the visible patterns. I have tendencies when I'm in front of a notation editor and just want to do something lol. Piano and flute. My "goals" with these things were to create something interesting I guess. As subjective as a term as that might be. They will be further developed eventually. I'm glad you point out the patterns though, since that's something I don't want to get to caught up in. I want a unique sound.
In general, right now, as far as my "composing" goes, I want to work on modulation and counterpoint. Neither of these display good efforts of either (as I pretty much did them however I pleased), and beyond that I'd like to continue working on my theory. I've been making my own music for awhile, but I am definitely still an amateur when it comes to "professional" composition. I only now finished my first semester at college studying it. Looking forward to going back in spring. My only caveat is going to be continuing to study Tertian harmony and academic learning of composition without letting myself get to befuddled with certain rules. Although I know they all have their place, and a lot of them are tremendously beneficial.
In a more broad response, I would say my goals are to become a competent and diverse composer who creates unique fantasias and pieces that synthesize the heights of the broad spectrum of music I like into something enjoyable and different.
