can we talk about solo piano
whether we are speaking about cocktail jazz or classical. there are certain things that makes an impressive performance.

first outlining the melody.
if you are fingering the melody that is fine
but there are other ways to do this

thirds sixths and octaves
hanon has some etudes that deal specifically with this in his third part of the 60

most melodies can be played using sixths and thirds and all can be done using octaves.


appegiation having mastery of appegiation espicially seventh chords is a way to give a cultured quality to your jazz arrangements hanon also has such etudes for all the standard chords. in part two of the sixty

I plan on spending the next several weeks being sure to include these types of technique work to my schedule

I played Hanon for many years as a young musician. I still occasionally go back to it.
IMO Hanon is purely a technical exercise and doesn't have a real lot of specific application to building solo piano arrangements.

I suppose you could do an arrangement that featured bits and pieces of some of the arpeggio patterns or parallel sixth devices but you'd still have to fit it in musically.

So, Hanon is not really an arrangement building book.

Study some Bill Evans, Marian McPartland, or Dr. Billy Taylor if you want to see what devices real jazz players use in their arrangements.

Just put out a tip jar and play hanon in all the keys with shell chords LH

I wasnt saying to do all the hanon exercises nor was I saying that hanon will help you with jazz arranging

I was saying that doing the octave studies will help you with the tecnhinque of playing melodies in octaves

doing the the third studies would help you with playing melodies and runs in thirds

]and doing the sixths studies would help your ability to play in sixths.

and learning the appeggios over tetrad chords were all covered

some people dont know hanon is any more than five finger drills

arranging is something entirely separate from building blazing technique
