I didn't really find it funny..found it disrespectful because all they talked about was the bikini. Had it been that and some other stuff, it would have been funny.

I wish they'd asked some intelligent questions. The funniest part to me was one hand gesture of hers. Was it unintentional? Or intentional?

A part of me thinks it's funny, and a part of me feels like it's three musicians sitting around being incredibly narcissistic. Something about it feels like: "Look at us, we're up and coming musicians who are also extremely clever and funny!"

I'd rather just listen to Michael and Yuja play the piano and Nick play cello. (The two guys are also extremely talented musicians.)

I agree with Kreisler. Just because you can make and post a "funny" video to youtube, doesn't necessarily mean you should.

It makes me much less interested in seeking out these guys' performances, even if they are very good.

And unless she was "in on it" as the maligned guest, this is a perfect lesson for Yuja on when to walk out of an interview.

It seems superficial, but I think Yuja needed that... Now where's the fighters against short red dresses?

I thought it was silly. Yuja seems humorless and the guys are inane. On the positive side, Yuja is aware that there were objections to her revealing dress. I doubt that awareness will change her wardrobe choices until she grows up but it's a first step.

However Yuja has very valid points. It was in LA that she wore a short dress and its not like nobody wears short dresses in LA. Her point about the moralities of the people around her who seem to criticize her is valid too. I love what she said about Hollywood. So people seem to want to invent all kinds of moral standards as they deem fit. Sometimes the standards are low, sometimes high.. there seems to be no real logical reasoning behind any of it. The major argument in that other thread about her choice of dress seemed to be "it takes away the focus from her music". Well, whose fault exactly is that? laugh So maybe its people that choose the high moral ground who have issues with self-control and focus.

That's quite awful. This might be a kind of humor I don't understand since English isn't my mother tongue, but the guys just look they're from high school, and the whole thing seemed silly.

Apart from the ugliness of her dress, I wasn't very shocked when I saw those photos. Who care ?
I read somewhere that Gulda played a concert naked once. That was probably many decades ago...
For me the only thing which could be important is why she did that.

Yuja was most definitely in on it along with them. If I am wrong, then that makes it even worse. I just didn't find much humor in the video.

Hm. Am I the only one besides the OP that thought this was kind of cute? The entire thing is a clearly planned riff on the absurdity of the brouhaha surrounding Yuja's attire (something I had not been privy to until this point.) Yuja is in on the joke. The joke is that the "characters" that the two guys are playing (we are to understand that this is not their real life behaviour) are mildy smitten by her attractiveness and might, perhaps, want to encourage her to go further. They attempt to hide this in the guise of offering "career advice," but of course, fail. Yuja (or the Yuja "character") sees through this and inserts a few low key digs at the guys expense- which they miss. The guys are supposed to come off looking foolish and over eager.

It's a very low key form of humor. I chuckled at a few of the things struck me as somewhat "Flight of the Conchords" some what-Seinfeld-esque:

The tiny little extra "Nick" after the intro, very slyly introducing the competitiveness between the two guys. Nick wants to be the central focus of the interview, and Mike wants to prove himself to Yuja and make her like him.

Yuja saying "I'm feeling a little invisible here..." after the self aggrandizing intro of the guys.

Nick feigning ignorance "Ahh... that's right, that was you, wasn't it..." when clearly he was aware of the dress controversy (as of the very next sentence.)

The biggest laugh for me was Yuja's dig: "You have viewers?"

Nick's: "I saw pictures of it... (several times, actually")

Mike's "Like a burqua"

Michael insinuating himself into the proposed "date" - "yeah I like Pepsi"

It wasn't the funniest thing I'd ever seen by a long shot, but it's nice to see light-hearted joking amongst people we often regard "reverently" from a distance.

Also strongly influenced by Zach Galifianakis's "Between Two Ferns", interviews that revel in the awkward pause.

I found it 1/3 funny (I liked when Michael admitted he didn't get her sarcasm at first), 1/3 too precious ("look at us being funny"), 1/3 ick (this isn't quite how I want Wang to develop her professional image).

But overall, I like shaking up the establishment and seeing the musicians as real people. I like Denk's blog, Lang Lang talking about video games. So I think this is a small good thing.

Well, humor is a very personal thing. I happened to think that Flight of the Conchords was the funniest TV show of the last decade- and the Mike/Nick back and forth sort of reminded me of that show. Yuja was the straight (wo)Man.

Here's a photo of the dress in question: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/...tOBJ_story.html

And, well, ahem, she does look quite fetching. And, I might add, not at all out of place in LA... were she simply going out shopping in LA.

Yes, in the style of "Flight of the conchords" - but if the older folks - like me - need comedic reference points, there's also Bob and Ray, Elaine May, Martin Mull, Gary Shandling, and any of the Christopher Guest movies.

I found it funny. Even the edits were funny.

By doing this, Yuja Wang is laughing at herself a little. That's healthy.

Yes, good comparisons.

As is the "Between Two Ferns" comparison as well. I agree, the edits were part of the charm.

I personally don't mind any kind of humor as long as it's not cruel (even if I didn't enjoy it myself) and this particular 'interview' seems to me fairly harmless.

I have a friend who just doesn't get Victor Borge ('Son of a Sonata' gags etc)......

I really don't see what's so terrible. And it really did look kind of funny when it looked like Canellakis was trying to "score" with her. And she was certainly a good sport about it.

It is a tough, competitive world out there for performers. And one has to be pretty good even to fail. So many have needed a gimmick. (like the dress, or like some of the peculiar mannerisms or affectations that others have.

But IMHO, Yuja Wang needs no gimmicks. She is already one of the great pianists of our time.

I laughed. I'm impressed with how well they can deadpan absurdities--not an easy thing to do! Obviously it's not to everyone's taste, though, and maybe you have to be in the right mood.

OMG---what a lot of dour, humorless people on these comments--lighten up--piano practice can't be that hard on you--or stop listening to Chopin and get a little sunnier with Scarlatti! I think this is a VERY funny video--far from being jealous of the talents of Nick & company I celebrate them--the future of classical music will depend more on this than any sanctimonious "disrespect' this supposedly shows--what drivel.

It is SUPPOSED to seem sexist--and disrespectful--it is called humor, sarcasm--and parody! Yuja is brilliant as a 'straight-man" with wonderful looks and subtle playing against the men's very funny "pretentious' and 'sexist' posturing. Watch some of the other funny Conversation's to get the key to their humor.

My favorite moments--Yuja's look when Nick says to try the bikini-"I mean--I would come to that concert..."; "You have viewer's?"; and Nicks silent look of frustration as Michael says he will "..get a Pepsi with you"--what a funny depiction of a hopeless and hopeful "chatting up"of Yuja--see her eyebrows raise as she realizes it!

What each of us finds funny is always personal--but my,my--so many seem to miss the point or the fun I am truly amazed and puzzled. I give them all credit for many smiles and creative self parody--keep it coming.....

Just noticed this. Thanks for posting it!

It is totally hilarious. I cracked up every few seconds.

At first I thought those two guys are just morons, but about halfway through I saw that it's a put-on, at least in large part. But it's quite possible they're partial morons. grin

She handled it very well, under the circumstances. smile

Man, tough crowd...I thought it was hilarious! They've done some other vids, at least one with Jonathan Biss I recall seeing (he didn't play along as well as Yuja did). Truth be told, this is the most entertaining I've ever seen Yuja be in an interview; I usually find her answers to questions pretty vapid and "tired," like she doesn't really want to be there. This cracked me up. smile

I have spent time with Yuja back when she was in school in Philly. She used our pianos several times. She is truly a grounded kid with a contagious laugh, a sense of humor, and she obviously works very hard. I do not know the young men but I am sure they also work very hard.

I totally appreciate the video. They blew off steam and had fun, that is all. Sometimes you need moments like these when this is your field and you are twenty something.

Thank you Nick, Yuja, and Pepsi guy. wink

Now, I am jealous. I think she is one of the most talented up-and-coming pianists anywhere (and one of the most talented currently performing). But I have not had a chance to hear her in concert, or a practice room, or anywhere else other than youtube.

Why is this thing about her dress still an issue? Why does she even talk about it anymore?

Because this is video was made a couple of years ago, right after the dress 'incident' (which, btw, I adored! :D)...

So... She's making fun of all this! Good for her!

I guess at the end of the day, all I can say about this is I just don't care. It didn't seem like something worth working up the energy to defend or be angry over.

I am not a fan of Yuja Wang, but it has nothing to do with her being bad. Just at the end of the day with her particular skills I can think of at least two pianists in the same vein who give me more of what I want when listening. Lang Lang and Volodos(if I want something very fast, very technical).

As for the dress, I enjoyed it, not with my brain of course, which kind of shut off. Which I guess at the end of the day is the real problem.

What I think we have here, is more and more pianists in the same style of entertainment as Liberace. The difference, liberace seemed perfectly able to admit what he was doing, and that he was not the best. Now it feels like the same breed of entertainer is saying they should be taken seriously. Then they cut off an inch from their dress.
