The moment we've all been waiting for - it's sign up time for MOYD (Master of Your Domain) 2012. Join in - play every day - and see what a great difference it will make to your piano skills!

MOYD is a personal challenge where you commit to playing the piano for some amount of time every single day. If you miss a day you must come here and say so.

2012 will be the 8th year of MOYD on ABF.

MOYD RULES

1. Participating in MOYD requires you to sit on the piano bench and play something at least once daily. That's it. There is no minimum amount of time required. Five minutes would count... but more is better. Simply get to the piano every day, let it become a habit, and see what good things happen to your piano skills.

2. If you are away from home, you don't have to practice/play. You go to the 'Excused list".

3. If you are sick, you don't have to practice/play. You go to the 'Excused list".

4. If you are home, and not sick and miss a day, you come here and tell us the sad story on what kept you from playing. Once you have come clean and 'fessed up, you then go to the "Back on the Wagon list".

5. You may start late - however no new participants are accepted after September 30th.

6. Those who have reported being away, being sick, falling off and getting back on, or who sign up date STILL QUALIFY to put the MOYD 2012 badge in their signatures on 31 December 2012.

HOW TO JOIN

Simply reply to this thread declaring your enthusiastic willingness to join in and be committed to the plan!

I will check in regularly and update this first page with the information you provide. I will not reply to all the posts.

Signature pictures will be offered to those who are 2012 MOYD winners. Here are the 2011 Sigs.
TO ADD THEM TO YOUR SIGNATURE: Place your cursor on the desired icon, right click, go to properties, copy the Url, go to your profile page signature box, place cursor, click on "enter an image" paste.

Thanks MaryBee for making our badges!!

I'm ambivalent. I'm already practicing every day. I'm afraid if I join it will make practice feel like a burden. And I'm not motivated by the badge. And I'm going to be out of town on Jan. 1, with no piano, which is an annoying way to have to start. On the other hand the camaraderie of joining the thread might be fun.

Anyone want to talk me off the fence one way or the other?

Well, I would hate to think you feel it a burden. (-1)
However, you already do play everyday. (+1)
Having a start dates of 2 Jan is not a big deal. (+1)
Sharing in the camaraderie is just good fun.(+1)
The badge isn't "important" - but it is a symbol of being part of the group, which comes back to the camaradiere.(+1)

I'd say joining in wins 4 to 1. But it's up to you!

OK, casinitaly, you've convinced me. You may as well put me on the Excused list to start out, because unless I somehow wangle some playing time at my sister's church on New Year's Day, I won't be at a piano until January 2.

I'm in. Although I already know I have to be on the excused list from Feb. 23 to Feb. 27 due to travel plans that don't include a piano. And probably again in the fall. I don't think I'll ever make the "pure" list!

CMohr - my pleasure ... and I hope you make it to the "pure" list this year.... .(I doubt I will, but even so, as long as I am legitimately excused I'm going to feel great about my dedication!)

Hi Bob,
Perhaps a perfect opportunity to visit the local music stores depending on where you happen to be to test out the keyboards with music in hand.

Exactly my thought!

I remember someone (maybe my mom) saying to me: instead of coming up with excuses why you can't do something why don't you come up with solutions for how you can do it. Whenever I come up with excuses I think of that idea...I don't always follow it but I try!

Is anyone else unable to add the 2011 Sig picture? I'm on Mac (Snow Leopard) so that may have something to do with it. When I right click, I don't get a properties option. The choices I get are 'View image,' 'Copy image,' 'Copy image location,' 'Save image as...,' 'Send image...,' 'Set as Desktop background,' 'View image info,' & 'Block images from pianoword.com.' I've tried all of them (except, obviously, the 'Block' option) & all I get showing up in my signature is code. Strange, because I loaded the Alfred 1 with no problem (although, that may have been pre-Snow Leopard). Someone, please, help!!

Help has arrived. smile

Just use "copy image location" - that is exactly what you need. Then go to your siggy and add the image, paste in the location you copied. It should work.
PM me if it doesn't!

Headmistress - hmm, picture me looking very matronly and stern. On second thought... don't. smile

Anyway, yes but I now realize, after the last year I can't really be master because my wife sometimes has other ideas wink

But, yes on days where I can!!

I want to join again! My skills are improving. I am having trouble putting the signature for 2011's contest on my signature. The only thing that shows up is the URL, not the actual picture. How do I make the picture show up?

you have to click "insert image" and then paste the url into that ... or just type [ img ] before the url and [ /img] after. (without the spaces on each side of "img"

Ok...I'm confused. I think I have the first part of the instructions and can get the URL but can't figure out how to do the "enter an image" to get the 2011 icon on my signature line. I tried the "copy image location" too and all I got was the URL showing on the sig line. What am I doing wrong?

Just put this in your siggy :
[ img ] http://www.pianoworld.com/forumpicts/MOYD_2011/MOYD_1.gif[ /img ]

then remove the spaces on each side of "img" and "/img"

(I posted up above about inserting image, but in your siggy you don't have the prompt.....)

Hey,

I would like to be part of MOYD 2012. Is the cut off date September 30th of the prior year like 9/30/2011 or the year of the MOYD 9/30/2012?

If I don't qualify for 2012, then sign me up for 2013.

thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
the cut off date always refers to the MOYD thread in progress.... so for example, if someone wants to join in at the end of Sept in 2012, they can.

It all runs on the honour system, and I though I didn't set up MOYD or make the rules, I like the idea of being really encouraging to those who arrive ....albeit late!

You're on the list!

If, like me, you can't fit everything into the 300 character limit, you can drop the initial part of the URL since HTML rules about relative paths will do the correct thing. This is what I have:

Code:
[img]/ABF_Medals/4medals.jpg[/img][img]/ABF_Medals/medal_c_3.jpg[/img][img]/forumpicts/MOYD_2011/MOYD_1.gif[/img]

I think this is really going to be helpful. I'm setting the time aside for fundamentals - so it's been scales and chord progressions so far this week. Hopefully it will help me to focus and to utilize the time spent to a better advantage than what I have been doing.

Pretty good so far.. I have a little notebook that I record my practice in.. its nothing fancy like I've seen some others using. Mine is more to keep track of the amount of time spent practicing. Things will change when I go back to work next week cry

Please add me in again for 2012. Actually, I've been practicing all along, but am just now getting around to logging on the 2012 forum.
2011 was my first year of MOYD, and it has really made a difference. There's many a night I would be heading for bed, remember I hadn't practiced, then go at least play through something before turning in. But for MOYD, I wouldn't have bothered!

Last year I also started with a teacher in group lessons. Sometimes we spend more time talking than playing, but I think the group experience keeps us all motivated. Some of the group members also have children studying with the same teacher, but I'm just by myself, so I need all the encouragement I can get.

I love this thread! It has really made me accountable for practicing. Thank you for keeping it going. Yesterday I did not want to practiceas I was very tired. My plan was to sit down for 5 - 10 minutes (Just so I did not have to report I missed a day). Two and a half hours later I am still practicing. Not only that but it was one of my most beneficial days. Thank you again!

The cardiac ablation went very well and may really work to eliminate the afib. I came home last night and was too exhausted to do anything but today I'll make some music. So only missed a day so far this year. Shall I start with the Chopin or the Gurlitt? Maybe the Webber...

It's great to see all the new people signing up over the last few days! But just an FYI:
Casinitaly is on the excused list from January 4-9, so she probably won't be updating the list until she gets back.

Hi! Please add me to the 2012 MOYD!

Like Tinman1943, I've have been practicing but didn't find the extra time to add the new icon to my sig. Thanks MaryBee for the great art.

Being accountable to this group has also made a big difference in my playing, so thanks to all, but especially Cas. Really appreciate you taking on the job again.

I'm back. I actually managed to get in a bit of playing before we left on the 4th so only missed five days.

The list is caught up. Please let me know if I've got it right. I wasn't certain if some of the recent sign-ups have been playing since Jan 1 or are late starts.

Molehill... it is my pleasure to help out!

I need to go on the excused list starting on Saturday. I am going to the US to visit family and set up everything to import my horse and dog to Switzerland. My dog has been staying with my Mom until we found a suitable place, and my horse has been with a friend. I can't wait to see them! I will be back on Jan 30.

Thank you Becca. The trip went well, or at least as well as can be expected. We had to make an unplanned trip to Canada as my mother-in-law passed away.

Thank you Becca.

We were in Ottawa. Fortunately the weather wasn't too brutal, and our flights all went smootly. It wasn't a "fun" or "easy" trip by any means, but it was the right moment to be with the rest of the family.

Cas, So sorry to hear about your mother-in-law.

I missed Saturday, Jan. 7th. (So much for going for the pure list). We had a funeral to attend out of town. My brother-in-law's mother passed. It was a short trip, but an all day affair.

i'm still pure as of jan 11. i also start lessons tomorrow evening so hope to stay regular. just hope i don't stress out too much. in the past i did some lessons and always kind of freak out with the commitment of regular lessons. need to change my mental attitude this time. i had a few lessons with this teacher several years ago and i believe she is a very very good teacher and easy to work with.

Thank you - and my condolences to you and your family. It seems the last two weeks have been sad ones for many.

Thanks very much Wisebuff, although it wasn't a "happy" time, we did have a lot of laughs remembering the best of times with my mother-in-law. I was also fortunate enough to get to spend time with my own parents, which was very comforting.

Hi Casinitaly- not that it matters, but I have been playing since the 1st, and the past two years on MOYD. Could I be put on the Excused list for the work trip that I missed? Otherwise, feel free to leave me on the late addition. I just hadn't logged on to PianoWorld in a while and missed the "end of year" even though I've kept the playing up.

Thanks for keeping this tradition alive! I know it's a lot of work to moderate. It really helps to motivate for practice on some days!

Hi Mark, I'll fix it. Sometimes it isn't clear to me when people say "sign me up" if they mean "as of today" or "I've been playing since the first".
I have no problem with people nudging me if I make a mistake or misinterpret!
I'll move you to excused!

How's everyone doing?
So far no problems for me making time to practice, I've averaged 4 hours a day, thanks to my shift work pattern. I get plenty of time home alone with no distractions. Just started lessons, new book to work from so I'm fully motivated and have a road map.

Hope you're all doing good,

Neil.

I'm having less issues practicing now than I did at the beginning! I'm getting at least an hour a day at the keyboard (sometimes much more.) Knowing that I have to answer for my time here, keeps me pushing for time at the keys!

If it's a good quality hour, that can be fine. I usually play until I've made adequate progress on everything I'm working on, which usually works out to at least an hour and a half or two hours. But the other day I sat down, went through everything, worked on the problem spots, and felt like I'd done well, and, lo and behold, it only took an hour.

I've been told that even 15 minutes a day is good, better than skipping several days and then having one marathon session.

So here'a big HOORAY for all MOYDers.

I'm panicking about a couple of upcoming business trips. Not just because of MOYD, but because I don't want to miss 2 weeks of practice in March. I found a piano shop near my hotel in Chicago--it's a short jog away. I could try to arrange to practice there at least a couple of times the week I'm in Chicago. I thought of asking the hotel about a piano, too, but if they have one it's probably in a public space. Maybe I should just bring a theory book to read, or buy an iPad and get that sight reading app everyone is on about.

Two weeks is a lot to miss when you are in love with your piano time! The shop idea is a great one - you may even find that the owner is a PW member smile
Ask at the hotel too - sometimes they have pianos in suites or in "penthouse" lounges, not necessarily in very public places.

and of course the alternatives of reading up on theory or using your iPad for sight reading are also good ideas. (just not quite as much fun! )

Good luck!

MaryAnn, check into churches and schools in the area of your hotel. I have had extremely good luck this way when travelling, as both types of institutions have pianos that are typically sitting idle and abandoned in the evening. Best to call ahead and get permission, but I've also had luck just showing up and speaking with the janitor. Actually, I've never been turned away.

We're heading up to the mountains for a week. But, I am taking my keyboard so will not miss a day! We are getting together with a bunch of our musical friends, and there will be djembes, bongos, guitars, harmonicas - (maybe a banjo or mandolin). It should be fun and a lot of laughs. Hmmm, maybe I should record us? That would be good for the blooper reel! laugh

A bit OT here, but I would be interested in, aside from a badge at the end of the year, a thread as to what we have accomplished and the kind of progress we made from playing daily...or is there already one that I just missed? I think it will be very encouraging for me.

Is there something like that from the previous MOYD people? smile

There is such a thread..... Your musical goals for 2012.... it is in this forum. There was one last year too and Johan B was the thread starter...he followed up with us in Dec to get us to see if we'd met our goals! Lovely thread!

Welcome Polyphasicpianist! smile My "some" is equal to two songs a day, but I usually play for 1 to 4 hours. Not bad for a beginner I think. wink

Actually it'd be interesting to hear what everyone elses "some time" is to them....

ok, my bare minimum requirement is 1 hour but i always really shoot more for 2 hours; on weekends / holidays, i try to get at least 3 hours each day. on most week days, i manage around 1 1/2 - 2 hours depending on the number of evening work teleconferences i have to attend. i did have a 20 minute practice day this week due to illness. spend about 1/3 time playing through or polishing existing pieces, 1/3 working the details of pieces in progress, and the remainder randomly sightreading some easier pieces (try to alternate material so i don't play the same thing within a short period of time).

PPP: Four hours minimum a day? I've done 3 to 6 hours some days, but I admit, I don't think I could do it every day, much as I would like to. I already feel guilty because everyone thinks I don't have a life and never get to go out (they don't know that piano is my life laugh )

I don't know what my shortest practice day is. Maybe today is one of them. I only practiced about 1.5 to 2 hours, because I was made to do chores that lasted the whole day, when all I wanted to do was get started and put in my daily hour quota with the piano. :~( I feel so abused.

Do you guys ever get so sick of the sight of the piano that you have to get away from it for a day or two? I've been that way in the past...maybe for 1 to 1.5 weeks. Those days, I just read a book and play computer games smile I worry I might not make it with MOYD because of this little trait of mine, but we'll see at the end of the year!

I suppose there are some days where I've played for 4 hours - but certainly with a lot of breaks. I don't have the stamina to play for much more than 90 minutes at a time - and most of the time I'd say I play for about half a hour before getting up to take a break.

Daily - I try for an hour, on the weekends it is more, it varies.

I would be surprised if many of us here could get in 4 hours - or even if we had the time, that we would be physically be able to so.

OK, I was doing very very well last year from January until about June. Then everything fell apart.
We found a vacation home we wanted to buy, went to an out-of-town wedding for a week, focused on the vacation home, bought it and spent every spare minute working on it to fix it up, and . . . goodbye, piano.
But now I'm coming back. It's almost like starting over again because I've missed about 4 months, but it will be nice to try.
You'll have to put me on the excused list right away, though. The vacation home has no piano, and it's not likely to for the forseeable future.
I'll fess up when I'm there, though.
Other days, even if it's just for a short while, I'll be at the keyboard.

Speaking of practicing a certain number of hours a day, I picked up Just Practice, an iPhone app that was mentioned in one of the threads about logging your hours. It's really helpful! It makes logging time easier and more accurate.

I think I will try to join poly on his 4 hour a day endeavors as an ideal. I don't think I can do it everyday, but I will do my best. smile we gotta dream big and work hard! smile

Late starter here but from here on out, every day is a must for me. Hopefully I can make everyday from here to the end of the year.

I'm back in the saddle (that is, on the piano bench) after being out of town for a funeral and then sick a couple days.
But I must confess my "some" is nowhere near 4 hours every day (even though I'm retired and have "plenty" of time!) Some days it might be more like 4 minutes! When I get to the end of a day when I "forgot" to practice, I might just do one time through the pieces I'm working on. I really need to start keeping a log of practice time.

A teacher once said, it's better to commit to practice just 5 minutes EVERY day
than to an hour or more "when you can".
Because you can always squeeze in five minutes.
And quite often that 5 minutes will turn into an hour or more.
But on the other hand, the time will come when you won't have time for your "hours", and so you'll skip practice altogether that time. Then it will happen again, and again, and eventually you won't be practicing at all. And I know from experience in other things that he is right.

Tinman: That's a good way of putting it! The idea of putting in even just that 5 minutes actually made me feel better. For some reason, I was quite distracted today and couldn't focus on those scores. I did force myself to put in about 2 hours (it's probably less), though! I wonder if putting in 2 hours of forced mindless practice (and just flipping from page to page) is worse than 5 minutes of concentration?

What do you guys practice or do when you're tired, or bored, etc., but want to keep to your playing commitment and continue improving? Mindless exercises? Play an old score? Take a break?

I'm impressed that people manage to put in 4 hours a day at the piano. On weekdays I try to do one, and on weekends, I try to do more, but I break it up into chunks.

I've never wanted to walk away from the piano even for a single day, but there are definitely times when I have to end a practice session because I'm getting too frustrated.

If you manage to stay on the wagon, that would be quite an accomplishment!

Do you know something, thus far it hasn't been nearly as difficult as I assumed it would be. Something odd happens when you commit to 4 hours a day; namely, you (or at least I) loose that feeling of time constraint. Before, when I was doing two hours a day, I would sit down to practice and think to myself "I have to do a bit of this, and this, and this, and that," which would inevitably result in me having to stop practicing a certain thing, before I felt comfortable with it, in order to make time for something else. That is the one aspect of practicing I have never really liked since it becomes so easy to either spread yourself too thin or to waste too much time focusing on one thing at the expense of other more important things. Now I feel free to take as much time as I need, go as slow or fast as I need, and play as many or as few repetitions of something as I need.

I usually play through all the songs I know. First I do a run through of what I have memorized and then what I'm want to memorize then I get out my sheets. I don't actually focus on practice just playing. The first week of January that was almost the only thing I did because I still had family staying over for Christmas and no time for myself at all!

I only just started self teaching a couple of weeks ago. Waiting to order alfred's book but using something else for now. Often only get 15 - 30 minutes a day right now due to a baby, but hope to steadily increase that when I start to get that elusive sleep back again.

So, do I qualify to join? Think something like this will give me the extra encouragement to ensure I practice (learn) daily.

Hi MonkeyMark,
of course you qualify! I'll just put you down as a late start - I'll put 2 weeks ago as your start date.

Congrats on your new baby - boy? girl? Your child will grow up with wonderful musical memories !!!!

Thanks for that. Yes, i'm hoping they can grow up with music in their lives.

Our newest is a boy. He was in hospital for a few weeks at first but now he's 5 months and doing well. Must need our heads looking at. He's number 4. The last is only a year older, so its a busy house right now.

4 kids, 2 under 2 year old! wow. That has to be challenging (and not only with regards to sleep!)
It must have been scary to have your little one in the hospital - and wonderful to have him home and thriving now!

I never got my full 4-hours in yesterday. frown I only managed 2.5 hours before work. I had such a bad day at work that after I had finished I just went home, and instead of practising, ate some pizza and crawled into bed. Tomorrow will be better.

2.5 hours is still a pretty significant amount of plying/practicing time.

As far as MOYD goes, you're still very much on track!

And from the other extreme, I hope 10 minutes in the morning & 10 in the afternoon still counts - it was all I managed yesterday. Today should be better!

Yes, that counts! Even if you had only managed 10 minutes ONCE, it would count.

Consistency is the name of the game..... get to the piano every day!

I need to go on the excused list for Saturday & Sunday. I took my wife away for her birthday to Savannah (lovely city!).

There was a baby grand in the hotel lobby which I know was working because they had a cocktail hour with a pianist each evening. She played "standards" - very nicely too, though she did trot out mostly the same pieces each night. But we were too busy for me to sit down and bang out my tunes.

I am back from the US, and back on the piano bench! It was a great trip, and I was fairly lucky weather wise. I just missed the big snow in Seattle, although I did catch the floods in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Our family was high and dry though. Missouri gave me pretty good weather for January. No snow or ice! I visited my Mom for her 82nd birthday. Now I can't wait to get back up to speed with my piano pieces!

Played everyday in January.
One down and 11 more to go!
I've really gotten more practice time in this past month than I had previously.
Even on the "playing" days I've done a few scales for warm up.

Only did 2.5 hours today, I debated on doing more but my practising wasn't going as well as it should and since it is now midnight and I don't really foresee it getting any better in the next hour and a half I figured I may as well stop before I do more harm than good. I really shouldn't have put off my daily practice to so late an hour today. I also missed my Sunday practice, definitely not happy about that either.

Did you miss Sunday due to being away or sick? if so you go on the excused list - otherwise on the "Back on the Wagon".

I just didn't practice on Sunday. I knew I was going to have a pretty terrible day at work (which started in the afternoon) and I just wasn't motivated to do much of anything prior to leaving for work, which included practising.

I am pretty sure this doesn't warrant putting me on the "excused" list for Sunday, nor would I want it too. Does that mean I 'fell off the wagon' on Sunday and then on when I did my Monday practising I was 'back on the wagon' (I am kind of unfamiliar with the MOYD terminology)?

I think I am going to start a blog which just lists everything I practice each day and for how long. I find it far too easy to cheat MOYD (if you don't mind me saying so). A blog might help circumvent this.

That's right, you can't be "excused". You fell off the wagon. smile
I will put you back on smile

As far as it being easy to "cheat"--- we work on the honour system. If someone doesn't report, ...well, we won't know -but they will. I figure anyone who "cheats" at MOYD is to be pitied rather than chastised.

There are a number of people who don't bother reporting in on missed days - but then they don't put the MOYD badge in their signatures either - so they aren't cheating, they are just not reporting.

We're a support group, not a policing entity smile

And for those of you just tuning in, while our friend PPP sets his (her? sorry, I have no idea) bar high at 4 hours per day, that is by no means the standard.

Our goal is to get to the piano every day.
Most find that if you sit down thinking -ok, I'll get in at least 10 minutes of scales.... you inevitably manage to do a bit more and as the year progresses, it pays off.

One month down, 11 more to go! Yesterday was a rough piano day for me. Instead of practicing I just played through the songs I knew and tried to play through those that I'm working on.Taking the day off of practice and just playing around instead of accomplishing something seems to help me with my frustration levels.

I am so happy to find Piano World. What better way to start my posting than signing up for MOYD 2012? I don't know how much time I will be able to play every day, but would love to at least play every day! I already have an out-of-town trip planned sometime in early April, but I will do my best to make the "excused list".

I only managed 3 hours today. I think perhaps because I tend to split my practicing into two hour blocks, and the second block tends to get put off until late at night. I will have to try and avoid such a scenario in the future. Procrastination can be quite persuasive.

Becca - we have to enjoy days of just playing, not "practicing"---after all, that's the end goal isn't it? smile

PPP your practice log is a great idea. I know a lot of people like to keep a log. Personally I just use my lesson list to be able to look back and see what I've been able to get through over any given period. I can't be bothered to keep a daily log - but that's me.

For those just starting to look at the thread - please note that polyphasicpianist's 4 hour goal is self-imposed - that's a personal objective and no one should think it is "standard MOYD" requirements! There is no set daily time for MOYD at all. NONE. Nor do you have to keep a log - though many do!

LOL good point Cas! I think I forget that sometimes!

I'm still plugging away. My arm is sore so my practice has gone down from 2 hours to one with lots of breaks. *sigh* I started yoga and have aches everywhere now! LOL

Heya all. Hows everyone doing?

Tues and Wed were tough days for me this week! I managed to squeak in scales only because I broke my piano! It's now fixed and I'm back to my 1-2 hour practice a day but boy did that suck! I did scales just so I wouldn't have to go on the excused list! LOL I had to play them in the lower registar to avoid my broken hammer spot.

Ah well it's over with now.

Well, I'm impressed with polyphasicpianist, but I ain't nowhere near 4 hours--and am not likely to be.
However, instead of keeping a log this year (which got to be a pain last year), I'm simply using my chess clock to keep track of the total time spent.
I set a minimum goal of 30 minutes for the days when I can get to the piano, and currently I'm averaging well above that. The great thing about the clock, though, is that I can play in 15, 20, 30 minute "chunks" and it adds up. I don't have to sit there and plug away forever. If I have 15 minutes before dinner, I have a nice little chunk where I can polish things up.
It's working well.

I have found the MOYD has sometimes gotten me to the piano when I would rather have just blown it off. For a while I was thinking maybe I would withdraw, because I wasn't sure I like having that external pressure on my playing. I think I'm getting more used to it now and internalizing the mantra of playing every day, so it feels more like me telling me to get some practice in, even if only a few minutes of half-hearted runthroughs, and not some outside force.

Sounds like everyone is doing really well.

Michael Steen: I think working in "chunks" of time works well for a lot of us. I tend to do that too. 15 minutes can be a great amount of time to focus on a wee problem area.

Becca - good for you - we all have days where we don't have a lot of time to spend at the piano, but just making a point of doing something can help us stay in the groove!

PianoStudent88 - I agree with you - "me" telling me to play - that's what it is all about. I am feeling pretty pleased about being at the start of my third year of playing every day (with only 1 sick day, and some travel days as legitimate non-playing days).
Yesterday I almost didn't make it... I've got a cold and REALLY wasn't in the mood. But I did a bit and was glad to have made the effort.

Yes, those 15-minute practice chunks can be really useful. One of the benefits of MOYD has been that on days when time is short (usually every Wednesday, bcz of my schedule) I've learned to sit down for 15 minutes & FOCUS on one small problem, & often fix it.

I am new to the piano and the forums, and I just now found this thread. Please sign me up. I have missed two days in 2012 so far, but my goal is to keep it at just those two days. Thanks much.

Welcome Jaojr, I'll put you on the "excused" list --- remember that you can be excused if you are sick or away from home - but if you forget, or run out of time, or skip a day you "fall off the wagon" and have to get back on smile

Hope you enjoy being in the MOYD 2012 group!

CAS: I need to go on either the excused list or the back-on-the-wagon list, whichever is appropriate. Missed yesterday because I was out of town and didn't get back until after midnight. Thanks.

LB, out of town qualifies as excused.

Please add me as a late signer upper for MOYD2012.

I have not missed a day this year, so far. Between MOYD and my spiral bound notebook log tapping its little accusing, guilt-inducing toes, I think I'm set.

I've been dreading coming here to 'fess up, but I have an unexcused absence from last week. I blame the 日本酒. I didn't even have that much, but I couldn't practice with the room twirling :-( I'm really mad at myself for not even getting through two months. March is full of travel, so there will definitely be missed days then. I've been practicing really hard since. I am making progress, which is the important thing...

Ok, MaryAnn, you are back on the wagon smile Your travel for March will be "excused" just give me the dates when you get back.

Welcome Stubbie - generally if folks tell me they've been playing every day I put them on the "pure" list - if they don't specify, I put them on late start.

I have been shirking my MOYD duties, averaging only about two hours a day for the past couple of weeks. I have excuses, but I shall spare them since nothing short of a zombie apocalypse technically should suffice. Anyway, both as a sort of a punishment and extra incentive to work harder, I shall fasten to my PW signature a badge of shame (seen below). I intend to wear this badge for each day I fail to live up to my own set standards of practice.

Dear dear Polyphasicpianist,

Will you permit me to say a few words?

First of all - MOYD has no place for shame. It is a place of encouragement and support to keep up with a realistic objective - to get to the piano once a day.

I fear that your self-imposed 4-hour schedule is one that is self-defeating unless you are a full time music student or training for a musical profession.

Please don't beat yourself up - by all means have goals - but make sure your goals are realistic. If you set goals you can't consistently meet you are setting yourself up for "failure". I put it in quotes because I personally can't consider 2 hours a day a failure.

If you've been playing every day - you are MOYD, pure and simple.

In MOYD there is no set time frame.

My reason for writing to you like this is two-fold.

In the first place, I really do think you are beating yourself up. Of course I don't know your circumstances, but nonetheless, for the average player in this thread 4 hours is pretty much unthinkable. As you are discovering, it is challenging for you too.

In the second place, I really feel responsible for following up on all your posts with a disclaimer that MOYD is NOT about 4 or 3 or 2 or even 1 hour a day - it is about getting to the piano every day and playing or practicing.

I don't think you have any need to wear a badge of shame, and honestly, I think you're generating a bit of a negative spin on the fundamental concept of MOYD.

I don't mean to be unkind, not at all - I admire your drive and determination. I just don't like to see you putting yourself down with a badge of shame, and I really want to avoid any confusion that gives newcomers the idea that they have to try to reach specific amounts of time at the piano.

I wish you success in meeting your goals - I just think that maybe you have to assess what is truly realistic for you.

Good luck - and don't wear that badge of shame, please - you have nothing to be ashamed of. Not even in jest.

Well, much to my chagrin, I took down my badge of shame out of respect for your thoughtful post Casinitaly. But I really can not be content with my two hours. Is four hours realistic? I don't fully know at this point. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. But what I do know is that it is too early to conclude such a question with any real certainty, and that it would be unwise to stop trying in light of a few failed failed attempts. If playing the piano teaches us anything, it is that effort, more often than not, only releases it reward after a person has refused to quit, and I simply refuse to quit.

With that being said, I do understand that MOYD is about just getting to the piano, as opposed to being at the piano for X amount of time. I realise I may be inadvertently creating a rather stressful atmosphere here. Four hours a day is not an easy goal to reach, and I can't pretend that it is. However, I am not entirely sure what I can do about this insofar as MOYD is concerned. I suggested other alternatives on a previous thread, but that met with disapproval for the most part. If anyone has any suggestions I am more than willing to hear them out.

Hi again PPP, thank you for accepting my words in the spirit they were intended.

I really do admire your determination - and maybe you do need to give your target more time to see if it is realistic or not.

I have an idea. How about a sort of compromise?

I will go to the first page of MOYD and create a new category - I will call it "MOYD with a twist" smile

This can be a slot for anyone who has a special target for their daily activities. The target doesn't have to be disclosed or discussed - (so no stress for anyone) - but you can report in as necessary that you fell off the wagon and are getting back on....and I hope that I won't be seeing too many reports! :):)

Would that work for you?

Really the point of all this is to help and encourage people to reach their goals, - if that will help you, then.... well, why not? It isn't as though it creates extra work.

Would you like that?

Well, so far, other than my trip to the states, I have been faithfully practicing every day. I will admit that one day was only 15 minutes, because we went on an overnight skiing trip. While everyone else was breakfasting, I slipped off for a short rendezvous with my piano. It was all I could do before the train. But, that balances out my 4+ hour practice days when its such fun that I just can't get enough piano!

I didn't contribute to polyphasicpianist's original thread about wanting to go beyond the minimum MOYD requirements, but having watched this in operation now, I don't think MOYD with a twist makes sense. In the context of MOYD, I feel no cheerleading sympathy at all for someone beating themselves up for practicing two hours a day. I think MOYD is about just getting to the piano, and if someone wants group motivation to do something else or more, it would work better on a different thread.

PPP did try to start a different thread, but there were no takers. I'm trying to offer a compromise.

I see your point - but I see that it is important to PPP too.

However, if there is strong feeling against this idea then that's a problem too.

hmmmmmmm a bit more thinking on this one is required perhaps..

casinitaly, I have recovered from my ill humor of last night. If the Twist works for you and polyphasicpianist, and no-one else objects, then I won't object either.

Separately: I got to play a clavichord for a very teeny bit tonight. A fascinating instrument. I wonder if this counts for MOYD smile .

I've been reading this, too, tho I don't participate in MOYD simply because it's not my style to play every day. I do have goals, and I keep track of them. I don't personally feel a need to find a way to use MOYD "with a twist" in order to keep track of them or to share them with others, tho that's just me. MOYD is MOYD, to me, and it's been around a long while. I think it's a kick that people do this to encourage each other.

I've read casinitaly's clarification, each time ppp posts, that MOYD isn't about how much time, and for sure not about 4 hours a day, but about getting some time each day. And I can see that it needs to be clarified each time, because some people come to the thread late and may not read the whole thing, and be confused about the basic premise of MOYD.

So for one thing I think it is ppp's responsibility to MOYD to clarify, if he's posting about specific numbers of hours, that he's fallen off his personal wagon, and not off an MOYD wagon, so that others will not mistake the "particular amount of time" as a general MOYD thing, rather than the "at least a little" time that really is MOYD's. I don't think casinitaly should have to do that.

And I really don't see a need for a category for one person. If no one else was interested in Extreme MOYD (I think that was the proposed name) then - oh well. MOYD as it is can work for ppp if he sets his own goals and reports when he's off the wagon. He could, in fact, simply report that he's off the wagon without going into what his particular goals were, and treat MOYD just like everyone else does. "I'm off the wagon today - I was just lazy laugh " or "I'm off the wagon - work took a huge amount of time, but hope to be back on tomorrow." That would work, too, and he wouldn't have to explain, in order to be responsible to MOYD, that his personal wagon is 4 hours/day.

So I think, if ppp took the responsibility of doing the clarifying about his personal goals, and - for his sake as well as others - used MOYD as encouragement to get back on the wagon and not punishment for falling off (I'm with casinitaly on this - the encouragement is the thing), then the separate category wouldn't be necessary.

JMO, of course, and since I only lurk on this group, it's worth about what you paid for it laugh

Cathy

Pianostudent88 - thanks for coming back with a different perspective. (and wow, playing a clavicord? what fun. In my MOYD book, that counts (and I guess therefore...it counts wink )

Jotur/Cathy - that was a very thoughtful and logical post. I really like the way you laid everything out so thoughtfully.

Personally I think this could work very well, and at the same time keep things simple and not create confusion on the fundamental premis of MOYD which is simply to get to the keypboard.

PPP - are you still with us - does this work for you?
It seems like a very good option to me.
Let us know.

My husband had surgery last week and was in the hospital for two days. So I had two days when the only practice I did was playing through a couple of pieces from memory for a total of about five minutes at the end of each day. He is doing very well, and should make a speedy recovery. He hopes to be back to skiing before the snow is gone!

Glad your husband is going to make a speedy recovery! That's wonderful.

As for only getting in 5 minutes - hey, you got to the piano (at what must have been a stressful time!) I hope those 5 minutes added a smile to your day.

Hi Casinitaly, I missed March 5-12 ( except 9 and 11, where I squeezed in a bit of practice on the hotel piano) and will miss March 17-21. Both are work trips. I have been "practicing" fingering of the minuet I'm working on away from the piano, and reading the Charles Cooke book about effective practice, just to keep my head on the piano...

MaryAnn - great idea to do some brain work on the fingering when you can't actually get to the piano!

I almost missed yesterday - I had a super long day and came within inches of just not playing, I was pooped. However, I decided I would just run through my scales or something...and ended up playing for about half an hour. smile

My husband made a quick recovery, so we went on a ski trip Tuesday through Friday. I was unable to practice piano Wednesday or Thursday. We are going again next week for the same Tue-Fri so I will miss those same two days. The skiing was great, and now my legs are happy that I am back on the piano bench!

Hello. I need to be excused today for illness. Hope to be back at the keyboard tomorrow. Too queasy today to focus on a score, alas.

Well I have been slow but surely getting the hand of this four hour thing. Certain days give me trouble (specifically Sundays and Friday) - so I still have to think out a good strategy to work in an extra two hours, but I am confident I can figure something out. Also, I have been completely neglecting my practice log - this is something I hope to remedy starting tommorow.

DISCLAIMER: I have set my own daily challenge, for personal reasons, which is quite different than the standard MOYD objective. The MOYD objective still is and always will be to simply get to the piano once a day, every day for as little as 5-10 minutes or as much as you like. I have self-imposed a fixed amount of time per day as a personal goal. No one in MOYD is obliged to be at their piano for any specific amount of time.

Thumper49, hope you feel better soon!
PPP - good luck with your strategy!

I've had a head cold all week and have really been doing the minimum.

So far no missed days this year, but some days were late night last minute practice sessions due to too much happening during the day.

Will be learning the next part of Für Elise tomorrow! Can't wait!

polyphasicpianist - your disclaimer made mrsmile - great spirit! Thanks.

I know how it goes to neglect the practice log. It took me two days to catch up after this weekend.

I'm pretty sure that if 4 hours a day is a possibility for you you'll figure out a way to do it. And if it doesn't turn out to be a possibility I'm pretty sure you'll know why, and what your priorities have to be at this stage that make it not possible, and you'll have a plan for practicing as efficiently as you can to get what you can from the time you have. Seems to be the way you work.

I just realized that this MOYD thing has become a part of my life, so much so that I don't even think about it anymore. When I started, there were some days when it would take a lot of effort to sit down at the piano and start practicing, and the only reason I did it was because of MOYD. Now it's more like eating dinner; it's just something that I do everyday -- often looking forward to it, almost always enjoying it, and never considering skipping it.

SIGN ME UP!

...I do this anyway. Have been for almost a couple years, aside from when I am out of the house for travel or extended periods of the day for biz. I'd say I played piano about 97% of the days in the year, usually over 2 hours a day.

Hi Casinitaly, I will need to be excused from 3/29 until 4/8. Taking a trip to sunny Florida (from sunny and hot upstate New York) to see family.

It is for me too - the only reason I've been close to missing this week is that I've got a head cold and have zero energy frown . Usually playing is one of the highlights of my day. This week it is a matter of determination smile

I will need to be excused for 3/22-3/27. Off to Seattle for a wedding. If I get my act together tomorrow and get packed and the house in order, I might get in a few minutes on Thursday morning before we leave.

f Okay, that is probably wishful thinking on my part, especially the 'get organized' part.

Sorry, I got some unexpected and rather distressing personal news yesterday and my practising both yesterday and today suffered because of it - I definitely failed to hit my mark. Hopefully, tomorrow will bring better things.

PPP - I'm sorry to hear you had such distressing news. I wish you well with whatever it is.

Thumper, good for you! - and thanks, my cold is on its way out the door, finally! It has been a long week. Last night was the first time in a week that I really enjoyed playing...and that says a LOT.

No worries Wisebuff - someone else had posted in the 2011 thread, (and I hadn't noticed it was the '11)..I replied, then you replied - All too easy to miss, so I asked Greg to close the other thread.

It was a group goof smile lol.

I'm back from my trip to Seattle and I've already gotten in my practice for the day. And I did manage some practice on the day we flew out.

I did manage to plunk a few keys on a grand piano, but it truly was a plunking of a few keys. The piano was at the place where the wedding we went to was held. It was scrunched into a corner, with the keyboard facing the wall--probably to discourage people like me from having any fun with it. Oh well. Feels good to be back at the keyboard.

This is my first year signed up for MOYD -- I first took up piano too late last year to join.

I'm not sure what my posting responsibilities are, but the year is going well so far. I have practiced every day this year with two categories of exceptions.

First, I do travel a fair bit on business, and often there is no piano available. So I do miss the business travel days.

The second category has turned out to be less a problem than I thought. My first instrument (at least before taking up piano) has me committed to a gig with a light opera pit orchestra for several productions a year, and in the week before we open (known to the company as {something like} "heck week"), we all convene at the theater after work from about 6:30 to midnight for dress rehearsals, then later in the week, preview performances and finally the opening shows.

I had thought that I wouldn't do any piano practicing at all during "heck week," but even committed to these 18-hour days, I found that I spent 15-30 minutes at the piano almost every morning before heading to the office (and from there to the theater).

This is kind of a beautiful addiction, isn't it?

I agree it is a beautiful addiction smile

Your posting responsibilities are to ask to be put on the excused list when you are sick or travelling.
If you miss for any other reason, you should 'fess up, that you've "fallen off the wagon" and get put on the "back on the wagon" list.

I'll just put you on excused with "various dates" for now ok?

OK, the right thread! I have to go on the excused list for a week. We're staying with my sister-in-law and no piano. I am trying to memorize some weaker sections though!

That's a useful way to work on your music while you're away - but frown no piano for a week. That's sad.

Made it every day through February and March. Even on days when I'm tired and think I'll play 15 minutes or so - most of the time it ends up being 30 to 45 minutes.
At this rate maybe I will make it to Alfreds' Level 2 in 2012!

Ah, we went through that in Dec/Jan - that's a lot of emotional stress to be carrying. My best wishes to you and yours at this time.

I haven't had a lot of AB forum time of late. I've been practicing, but I'm only just getting around to reporting on my mishaps. I did have some excused travel in January and March, but that doesn't matter as I fell off the wagon here and there in the last three months. Could you put me in as back on the wagon as of April 8?

Thanks!

I'm still here, still practicing, & haven't missed a day. Though yesterday was almost a miss - after house cleaning all day, I only managed about 15 minutes at the piano while dinner was cooking.

Carol, that's great and really, 15 minutes still counts!!! It is the consistency we're after, making sure we play every day.

Good for you!

Back from an out-of-town visit with my husband's family -- I missed practicing April 6-8. It's good to be back.

Okay, I am in! I would like to sign up.

I am nearly 50 years old and never played before. My (9 year old) daughter takes lessons and my son took them and will be going back in September. We have a digital piano and just purchased a Yamaha C2 because my daughter's teacher said it was time for her to start playing on an acoustic piano. (It arrives on Friday.) I decided that if I am spending that much money on a piano, I am going to learn too. (My wife said she will also learn to play.) Got a couple of Alfred's Adult self-teaching books and have been practicing on the digital for two weeks now. This is actually fun!

So, fifteen minutes a day (minimum) is something I think I can do. Of course, that expensive piano will rarely be used by me since the only time I have to practice is late at night. But at least the digital will be mostly mine now.

So, please sign me up and hopefully this will be continuing motivation to stick with this beyond the depleted bank account.

Hello,

I would like to sign up. I have been back to the piano for about a year now, after taking lessons as a little kid. Now that I just had my first lesson with my new teacher and I figure this will be a good way to remind myself to practice my assigned pieces.

My two sister-in-laws are coming to visit from the US. I will be traveling to Germany and France with them for the next five days, then I will be home for a few days (I will practice a little those days), and then it is off on the Bernina Express to Italy for two days. So, I will have some excused non-practice days in the next two weeks. Unless I can find a lonely piano along the way...

Why don't you let me know when you get home what your exact dates are - or if you want me to just block out the whole 2 week period. For some people it is important to see the specific days. smile

Have a great time. Where in Italy are you going to be visiting? I might have some tips for you! (send me a PM if you like).

I need to go on the back on the wagon list please. Work got a little out of hand and then I had minor surgery! So I fell off and got back on quite a few times! LOL (I don't care at all about the dates btw.)

Glad to have time to be back! smile

Have to confess I missed last Friday. No excuse--just forgot.

I'm getting ready for my piano lesson group spring recital soon.
I've been practicing Bridge Over Troubled Water every day--well, ALMOST every day!
I'm finding there comes a time when I actually feel confident that I "know" the piece.
Now it's just a matter of getting up to speed.

I am back from vacation with my visitors, and back to the piano. I missed April 18-21, and April 27. I did manage to find a lonely piano at one hotel, and played through one piece when no one was looking. It was a fun vacation, but I am happy to be back to my piano.

I am sooo excited! I was able to buy a gorgeous used 1979 C3 Yamaha Grand, in great condition! Talk about a motivation to play everyday, and great upgrade from a keyboard. Although I might be missing some days in July for vacation…we shall see. Still, my first acoustic piano in 10 years!

Alas, Cheryl, I've got to ask you to ding me for Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6. Mrs.F and I were aboard a little cruise to the Bahamas and I couldn't find a way to practice. Listened to lots of great piano work by a talented jazz soloist who treated me to all my favorite old standards. Unfortunately, his piano had a big "do not touch" sign on it so I refrained from the "sneak in at 5am" routine that I had in Vegas last year.

Oh, well. I was back on the bench a few hours after we returned to port this morning.

I may have to miss some days this week owing to working hours on new client project. I think it's going to be work, sleep and eat only (although I hope not).

I'm going to be gone from May 10th to the 27th our youngest granddaughter is graduating. These will be the first days I've missed since the first of January. I really feel like I'm improving - so much so that I uprgraded from my 76 key keyboard to a digital piano! yippie

Thanks for helping me to keep on track.

Hiya Cas. Can I be excused for today and possibly tomorrow? Work has foobared my hands. I can barely hold my tea cup or move the mouse. (typing is heck even.) I need a few days to let them heal up. I think I just overdid it or something and my carpal tunnel is on the rampage.

Thanks... I'll post back when I can use them again.

Ciao BeccaBb,sorry to hear you're in pain. I hear you. I've had too much computer time this past week too and I feel it.
(not as much as you are though!!!)

I'll put you out today and tomorrow, just update me when you're back and I'll fill in any days as necessary.
Take care!

Thank you Cas. My hand is a bit better today (I can type!) so I'm going to practice lightly today. I will not overdo it. smile

Last night I got the worst cramp ever in my right hand. It lasted about an hour and then just trailed off.... it feels better today but still I will be cautious. So back to it!

Becca - glad you're feeling better, but it sounds like you really need to take it easy.

Maybe do some massage of your arm - play with only left hand for a few days, and really really cut back on how much time you spend at the piano. If you're feeling tension at all when you are playing try to focus on relaxing when you play.
Check out if there are adjustments you can make to keep your arm relaxed when working at the computer.
I realized well after I had a serious problem than 85% of my problem was from the computer and playing the piano aggravated the problem. Fixed the computer problem and then had to heal and fix the piano problem too.

Be careful!

I am sitting in a plane going to Salt Lake City again. So I may not practice one whole week again (sigh).

After all the work you've been putting in on your pieces, what a shame!!! Let me know when you get back... who knows? There may be a piano available to you at the hotel.

Have a good week.

Farmgirl, I read your first sentence as "I am singing in a plane"!! Too early in the morning!

Now I have that music in my head...."I'm singing in a play, just singing, in a plane, what a glorious feeling, I'm ....flying again! " lol...

We got home earlier than we had planned - didn't want to be on the road over the memorial day weekend.
So I'm back home and started playing yesterday.

Hi Cheryl,

Forgot that I needed to ask you to put me on the excused list for May 21 and 22. A quick post-recital jaunt to Disney and Universal didn't offer up any piano opportunities. But the practice routine is back now that I've retruned to the land of the Muggles.
