I just unpacked my Roland RD-700NX that was delivered today. I am so excited!! Again, thank you all for your very informed answers to all the questions I had during my search for a digital piano. Here are two pictures of my new beauty. Cheers! Mike PICT6230 by tandemkayaker, on Flickr PICT6226 by tandemkayaker, on Flickr

Thanks gvfarns! Thanks for the settings Dewster! Will try them out. Rob, It was turned off the first 30 mins because it is cold here today and the piano was frozen in the beginning... Now it is on and I am just resting my fingers. The piano is absolutely amazing! Back to playing my new favorite; Canon Fantasy as arranged by Lee Galloway.

Sweet! For the "Concert Grand" try turning off the reverb, chorus, compressor, sound focus, and EQ. Turn up the sympathetic resonance to at least 64. Use good headphones. Also try the "Studio Grand" with the same settings but turn up the bass EQ +6 dB. The Studio Grand bass is a little light, isn't it? It's a fun piano to play, though, and a good reason to spring for the 700NX over the FP-7F.

Congrats. Looks very sweet. Still got a 700NX on my list. It's a good all-rounder. Love Roland's stands.

The Studio Grand bass is a little light, isn't it? It's a fun piano to play, though, and a good reason to spring for the 700NX over the FP-7F. Yes, that and the arguably more straightforward layer-based internal architecture / user interface on the NX (and - say what you will - the SN EPs).

@amaruk. Did you get the 3-pedal unit? It's worth having.

@amaruk. Did you get the 3-pedal unit? It's worth having. Oh man, you are making my argument from a while back that two pedals are sufficient look silly. Now I'm beginning to wish I had three pedals, and I can't even explain why.

Now I'm beginning to wish I had three pedals, and I can't even explain why. You need it. Think Rach c-sharp minor prelude. Lots of Debussy. I get a kick out of the fact that the Imperfect Samples 1908 Steinway D seems to support a full sostenuto pedal when the original AP on which it's based does not.

I use the same stand. Currently got the MP10 on it which proportionately sits better on it than Rolands do ironically. I hack-sawed off the excess parts of the upper tubes where they stick out and then plugged the ends again with the rubber/plastic grommets provided. The aim of that stand is to make the keyboard look like it is floating so the tubes that stick out either side of your knees ruins that impression. The Roland RD is not quite deep enough to look just right on the KS-G8 stand. But hack the excess off and shuffle the piano back towards the playing position a bit and it will look much better.
I know I'm a freak by the way.

Ha ha, yes the RD is just settling in and I'm saying get the hacksaw out...but the crazy thing is, I would. And did. And of course later on I had to cover up the Roland branding on the pedestal...can't have Kawai or Nord Piano sitting on a Roland logo! But Roland do make the sexiest stands.

I was thinking that I don't need 88 keys so perhaps when I have the saw out I could trim the piano on both ends to make it shorter... 60 or so keys would do .. That's crazy talk! You will need at least 61 keys . . .!

You will need at least 61 keys . . .! I agree. Just lop off the top octave. Seriously, the key assembly appears to be modular, with the dividing point being G#|A. It might be easy to remove the highest complete octave at those points, then smack the short A|C at the top onto the remainder. Removing the joystick would subtract the length of about 5 more white keys. The problematic part would be cutting the rest of the case to match the shorter keyboard - maybe relocate the AC supply on the right, and hack a bit off of the left? Then put in a couple of full-range 5" speakers and a stereo 10W amp. A chopped, lighter 76 key NX would be the bee's knees!
