Hope someone can help me. I just changed the liner and pads on my dampp-chaser (grand piano). There was water between the liner and the plastic box, so figured it was leaking. This time when I took the pads off, the humidifier bar vinyl coating was coming off. At first I thought it was just goo from the pads, but I can see the metal on the bar when I rubbed the "goo" off. Only rubbed with my fingers. This is the first time I've replaced the liner, and there was a "clean sleeve" in the liner kit, and I put it on the bar as instructed. There was not a clean sleeve on the humidifier bar prior, so wonder if my technician inadvertently forgot it when he first installed the dampp chaser 4 years ago (or if it's not needed). We've been out of town for 2 weeks, so I'm sure between the leak and not filling the dc regularly as I usually do, the pads dried out on the bar. Perhaps it reacted with the vinyl. Any advice? Should the bar be replaced? Thank you.

I think they originally didn't have the "clean sleeve" and it was subsequently developed because it made things easier to clean.

I wouldn't worry about the coating -- the heater bar tubes are sealed and aluminum so water isn't going to affect its function or durability.

When you leave, you kind of have to make a judgment call. You should have a sense of how long your system goes between fillings. If your trip will be less than that, I'd suggest visually checking the water level and filling it up to the full line -- or maybe 1/2" higher. Otherwise, you might need to consider unplugging the system -- especially if the reservoir is likely to be empty more than a couple days.

Keith: Thank you very much for your insight; I appreciate the help. I see your location is Michigan - hope you don't get too buried with Lake effect snow!

Sparky:

Fwiw, the humidifier bar being discussed in another thread had the coating peeling off in places. I suspect these were hot spots before the bar finally died. Just check that it is working periodically.

Just to let everyone know, my humidifier bar is just hunky dory.
I am not related to this other Sparky but I'm sure the royalty checks are speeding my way in the mail.
