The current issue of Clavier Companion hit my desk a few days ago and has been perking me up from some nasty health issues. In my book, this journal is a must read for any N. American teacher calling themself a professional. Numerous articles, including hands-on techniques including Lee Evans Jazz column. Some of the highlights of the current issue for me include Barbara Kreider's column on coping with 12 yr old student burn out. I have 3 of them, so naturally, I was interested in her comments and successes. Jane Magrath (pronounced Magraw) has an interesting feature on the connections between creativity and discipline. We tend to think of these as polar opposites, so it's interesting to read a contrary, and convincing viewpoint. Scott McBride Smith chased down Jean-Yves Thibaudet for a lengthy interview, focusing on his development, especially childhood, as a pianist. Some surprising insights here. Both live in S. California, so it's surprising that the interview took place in Muenchen. As the 100th anniversary of a rather sorrowful event, the sinking of the Titanic is coming up, Rebekah Maxner has a rather uplifting article on the pianos and bands of the Titanic. A fun read. All this is just a very small portion of the journal. For those of you who cannot make it to conferences, this is a solid alternative for your continuing education. Their on-line subscription process can be found here. You can also order through Amazon, at the same discounted rate. PS I'm not associated with the publisher in any way, except that we're fellow teachers. PPS Don't ask me to tell you the contents. That would be unethical. I'm sure you can afford the $25 for one year's subscription.

Both live in S. California... Dr. Smith took a job at the University of Kansas a year and a half ago, so I think he's living in Lawrence, now. (Just a tangential bit of trivia I thought people might be interested in.)

I was smitten by John v.d.Brook's description (it was the idea of an article by Jane Magrath that grabbed me. Plus, apart from my general interest in pedagogy (despite not being a teacher), I figure an article on avoiding burnout would be helpful to possibly know in the future (either I'll find out I'm amazingly like a 12 year old, or I'll discover that, mirabile dictu, I've matured, LOL).
It turns out that my library has this available electronically (only for on-campus users though, I think), so I've been reading back issues, and what can I say, I'm even more smitten.

John, this sounds interesting to me. Do you think it would be of any value to a non-teacher ? thanks- I really cannot answer this for you. But will say that thought I'm not an organist, but I always enjoyed reading my wife's Organ journals. You could always order one issue just for evaluation.

One point to keep in mind. Not every issue is going to "send" you. Some issues have little of interest to me, while others I can't get enough of. This just happened to be one of those issues!
Another point to keep in mind: the more subscribers, the more they can offer!

Another point to keep in mind: the more subscribers, the more they can offer! Naturally..... As luck would have it, Amazon recently offered to buy back a book I had ordered a few months ago, and I now have $20 credit- I love that site!
