I was searching through the huge selection of books at Sam Ash the other day and found a real nugget of a song book. It's at about the level of ability as someone working the second half of Alfred's Adult Beginner book 1. It has simple, yet nice and short songs.

It's such a nice book, I wanted to pass it along in case it may be of use.

It is:

An Introduction Classics to Moderns
Forty Very Easy Original Keyboard Pieces
Selected and Edited by Denes Agay
Amsco Publications

I found it at Amazon.

An Introduction to Classics to Moderns

Oh, I just ordered the second book in that series to practise my sight-reading. I don't know how well I'll go, but I think I did okay with the samples Amazon provided. If it's a bit too hard I might buy this Introduction book.

Mikrokosmos arrived today, but with 30 pages it's just not enough material for sight-reading.

Easy Classics to Moderns (that's the second book) has more than 140 PIECES, let alone the next book at the same level and almost as many pieces.

I love sight-reading! One day I will master it.

This book is quite an old book but is brilliant, I actually used this to study about 15 years ago and now recommend it and use it with my own pupils!

Hey thanks for mentioning a good book. I am in the second half of Alfred's book 1, and after the other positive posts here, thought I would take a look via the Amazon view pages thingy. Just ordered the following through Book DepositoryUK
* Introduction to Classics to Moderns
* Easy Classics to Modern
* More Easy Classics to Modern

Should keep me busy for awhile.. and even if some of it is too difficult for me at the moment, I can at least work up to them in the future. Alfred's is the only book I have, other than various 'how to books' from the local library, so it will be nice to have some books of sheetmusic to add to my very small piano book collection smile

oooh the easy classics to moderns looks really good for me. It has a few of the pieces people here mentioned when I asked for advice on what to play next.

I like that they are in original form, rather than more difficult pieces that need to be watered down to accommodate beginner levels.

A couple more good ones, also edited my Denes Agay, are
Joy of First Classics and
Joy of First Classics 2

They are harder than Introduction to Classics to Moderns, but not as challenging as Easy Classics to Moderns. My personal ratings would be

Elementary: Introduction to Classics to Moderns
Late Elementary: Joy of First Classics 1 & 2
Early Intermediate: Easy Classics to Moderns

Please step aside. You're standing in your own way.

Ooh, those could be a great intermediary if I find the Easy Classics to Moderns a little too hard. There are heaps there to give me a really solid foundation. They're going on my wishlist. Thanks for that, Tangleweeds!
