Hello,

Does anyone use the Mayron Cole Method? I am considering supplementing some of my transfers with it to help improve there reading. I would love to know a lot about what the books cover and when, quality of the music, etc One student in particular is a transfer student and came to me at the end of Alfred level 2 (orange book) and still really struggles with reading. I'll point to a note (an easy one, not ledger lines, etc) and sometimes it will take her 10-15 seconds to get the name of the not correct, with wrong guesses in between. Then she struggles to find it on the piano. Any other suggestions for fixing this problem would be appreciated.

Transfer students I have had that came "from" the Mayron Cole method did NOT do as well as the ones who were doing Alfred, etc. As to the struggle with reading notes, each lesson starts off with Note naming/finding. I keep a running record of how long it takes students to NAME the notes. We have a goal of 3 mins, then 2 mins then 1 min. Once they reach that point, I go back to 3mins and they have to name AND PLAY, then drop to 2 min and 1 min. Then we go back and add the ledger lines and do the same method (name/play 3,2,1) == this has really helped my students. I also teach them to not only KNOW the names/places of the notes, but I teach them to read music by intervals.

I had never heard of the Mayron Cole method until this morning. I took two transfer students (siblings of to of my current students) and was so confused until I researched that this is a method to use with group piano and electronic keyboards. Is there any benefit to using this method in private lessons? The music seems so boring, printed in extremely large font, and is mostly one handed exercises.

Check with Lisa K over on the Faber site. She has a lot of experience with this course.

Thanks, I just read one of her replies. Love it, "Don't drink the koolade!" I don't have any desire to teach group lessons with a classroom of digital pianos. I will check with Lisa to see if there is any reason to stick with this method until the student finishes 3A.
The sibling was actually done with her level 2A and hadn't purchased the next book yet, so she was excited to try out Piano Adventures 2B.
