The piano is left on Grand Piano Voice.

I notice that depending on where and how I hit G4's key it sounds different; from a higher pitch to the natural G4. I'm really not crazy!!! Also I tried G4 with different voices and the differences is even more considerable on the Harpsichord voice.

This P80 as never left the studio and is covered at the end of every recording!

Is there something dirty under the key that is giving this discrepancy or something complete different?

BTW it's very annoying mad

Would appreciate any input what to do (or a KB tech) to resolve this situation.

Thanks in advance

It sounds like you are talking about either a change in timbre or in tone (audio frequency). Either of those things should not happen. If the key is having problems, it could affect velocity, which of course impacts timbre somewhat. You can check whether the velocity is messed up by playing and looking at what MIDI frequency is being transmitted.

In any case, it might make sense to open it up, clean anything that looks dirty, make sure there's nothing under it, and possibly even clean the rubber things that connect to the sensors. That last is much more of a pain, but it seems to have helped some people.

gvfarns thanks for your response.

Yes you have used the proper acoustic terms. I didn't really know how to express it other then: "It sounds out of tune!"
And yes I agree with your assessment: it looks (sounds) like a velocity problem!
So you’re saying that it’s a mechanical problem? So I have no other choice then opening the Beast?

The problem is intermittent as well!

It crossed my mind for ½ a second that the sample would be damage in some way but that would not make any sense at all!

I will check the Midi frequency of the velocity as you suggested, good idea!

Opening the P80!!! Really didn’t want to do that!

- Have you ever done it yourself?
- Is it a pain?
- Any chance of breaking something?
- Any special tools required?
- Are they any shop manual available on the internet for such an endeavor?

Thanks in advance for your help

I've opened my Kawai. I used to have a P80 and I think I opened it up but it has been years and I don't recall the details. Usually to open these things isn't hard (a few screws on the bottom or something like that). Just don't take anything apart that looks like it would be hard to put back together.

Actually, I'm not sure what the problem could be. I agree with you that it seems more likely to be a mechanical/sensor issue than an electronic issue. I suggested opening it up because it's kind of the only thing I can think of. I'd start with a can of pressurized air, maybe look around to see if there's something you can imagine yourself cleaning. smile

Good luck, let us know if you learn anything that might be helpful for other people to know.
