Hi,

I finished trinity Grade8 and would like to start working on the ATCL exam but having problem choosing from the syllabus. I would like to play popular known pieces. Could you help me identify the ones available in the syllabus?

I know it is a long list but please help me laugh

Regards,

It rather surprises me - perhaps I should say considerably surprises me - that someone at your level with some obvious study of piano repertoire behind you would ask for others to help you choose your examination repertoire.

Speaking of "others," what does your teacher suggest?

It should be obvious that selection of examination pieces at this level depends so much on personal choice, what composers you know and like, which composers you might prefer to avoid (if you can), and, above all, which pieces you could live with for the length of time it takes to bring them to performance/examination standards. As far as identifying "popular known pieces," with a few exceptions they almost all on that list fit that category. Only a few of them are lesser known works.

This raises the question why you should want to play "popular, known works." The more popular or known a work is, the more you have to bring off a highly polished performance of it or bring something unique to a performance of it - although that may be more true of competitions than of examinations. Still, you should choose what you love and are going to be able to "live with" for an extended period of time rather than just choosing works because of their popularity. That seems a strange criterion for choosing examination selections.

Regards,

Thanks for your reply.

I didn't ask him (my teacher yet). I want to play pieces that ordinary( who are not even familiar with classic music) people should know. Btw I dont have any blacklisted composers or styles. I tend to enjoy playing every style and would rather play a piece that I dont like that adds to my skill than playing pieces for a composer I know and like laugh

Because of that I am asking everyone for their opinion smile

Personally, I'd never play a piece I don't like, no matter how much it might add to my skill (if it's purely 'skill', why not just practise exercises to achieve them, or find another piece that gets you the same results?) - especially not for an important exam beyond elementary level - but there's no accounting for tastes.....

But if you want my reply, I'd say that any of the Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Haydn, Liszt, Mozart, Rachmaninov, Ravel's Pavane, Schubert, and possibly the Grieg, Scarlatti, Prokofiev and Scriabin will be known to piano afficionados. But 'ordinary' people will probably only recognize (bits of) Beethoven's Pathetique, Liszt's Liebestraume No.3, Mozart's K331 and Schubert's Impromptu D899/3.

I was exaggerating and to tell you the truth I sometimes even get bored of the pieces that I like and I need to get a break. I would not imagine myself playing a piece that I don't like. I wanted to encourage anyone to suggest any pieces (since I don't know most of them) without limiting you.

and thank you for your suggestions laugh

Beethoven Sonata in E minor, op. 90
Rachmaninov Preludes op. 32 no. 10
Chopin Ballade no. 3 in Ab, op. 47
Bowen Toccata

The Beethoven is really hard to play well, even though it seems like a small sonata.
The rachmaninov is utterly gorgeous. I think someone told me Rach considered it one of his best compositions.
The chopin is also a great piece to show of your beautiful sound and phrasing.
Bowen toccata, is something quite frantic, but such an enjoyable piece to listen to (and to play)
