Hi all,
I bought a 6-year-old Kawai K25 around Thanksgiving time last year. It is still under the 10 year trnasferable warranty. At the time of purchase, I did notice the fallboard wouldn't fully close by itself and there are scuff marks at right coner. I asked the seller and she said it was the normal way with he soft-fall machiancs. Since it was in like-new condition with a good price, I purchased it anyway. I had the piano tuned 3 weeks ago and mentioned this to my tuner. He took apart the fallboard and found scuff marks at the opposite corners of the fallboard. He told me it's because the fallboard wasn't aligned properly and there's nothing he can do. He suggested me contact Kawai since it is still under warranty. I contact the Kawai dealer in the area and was told that he needs to verify with Kawai in CA to see if it is covered by the warranty. He called me back last week and said that he was still waiting on answer from Kawai since the person he needs to speak to was at NAMM and wont' be back until this week. And he also said that if he gets the go ahead from Kawai, he is going have my piano brought in to the shop to fix it. While I am still wating for the final verdict, I sort of want to see if anyone can advice me on this. Shoud this be covered by the general warranty? I would assume it is beause according to my tuner, it has to do with the 2 bolts(?) at the back of the fallboard that are not aligned properly. I take that as workmanship. And if they do give the go ahead and brought in the piano to fix, do I need to have the piano tuned again after it's back? The dealership is about 40 miles away. Do you think the piano will go out of tune for travelling the distance?
Thank you in advance
JC

Do you think the piano will go out of tune for travelling the distance? Yes. If it only involves the fall board, I don't see why they can't just take the fall board. Is that what the dealer meant? Either way, I don't see why this can't be fixed in your home without moving the entire piano 80 miles. Good luck with it. Rick

My tuner said the easy fix will be filing down the end of fallboard and refinish it. The other way will be fixing the back of the fallboard to adjust the alignment. I guess it is easier for them to brought in the whole piano then figure out which approach they are going to take. He said it will be a week or 2 to get the piano fixed. I know my son wouldn't like the idea of going without the piano for 2 weeks and piano comes back out of tune, plus the piano need to readjust to our house again before I can get it tuned again. Do you think they can just take the fall board to fix the problem?

The problem is probably not with the fallboard, but the hinges not being aligned properly. Moving one hinge should fix it. That can be done in the home.

I second BDB. Even if both hinges need to be adjusted.
