Just curious. Anyone have a Yamaha and a Kawai piano in their home? Anyone have more then one piano for different tones/feel? Very curious if some piano people are like guitarists!

I am! Two grands and two stage keyboards. When one of the grands goes out of tune then I head to one of the others. If I am practicing a song over and over to get it just right I use the keyboard so I can turn it down and not bug my wife.

I am a piano person and a guitarist so I understand the buying patterns well. There is no such thing as a perfect instrument in my opinion. They all play and sound different. The pursuit of the perfect instrument will always allude me. Guitar or Piano.

The Steinway and the Mason & Hamlin in the living room have much different sounds and feels.

I do have two different pianos for the same purpose. Both are for teaching; different levels of students to play on different instrument. I demonstrate in my teachings on either instrument. During house concerts, the grand is used.

I figured as much, I recently bought a Yamaha YUS5. I had looked heavily at the Kawai products. I found the YUS5 to be very unique but I really liked the tone of the Kawai K5-K6-K8 series. I just wanted to see what the appilcations would be and was it practical.

I have a Yamaha grand, and a Kawai upright. They are both quite bright, because I play them a lot, though the difference in tone is very noticeable. The Kawai has a purer tone, while the Yamaha has a somewhat more lively tone, a bit brighter, but quite dark in colour when compared to the Kawai.

I recently have fit into this category.

I have a Yamaha C7 grand piano that I dearly love! Like Rotom said, (he has one too) it is a tad bright, but also rich and powerful and mellow all at the same time (if that makes any sense).

I also have Baldwin 243 studio upright that I bought from a local college surplus sale a while back that I like too. It has that traditional “Baldwin” tone and I like to play it on occasion.

As of a few weeks ago, I bought an older Kawai 48” professional studio model and I am thrilled with it! It belonged to a career church pianist and piano teacher, and she apparently took excellent care of it and it is voiced down a bit and is very warm and mellow sounding. I’m not really a classical piano player (actually, I’m not much of a piano player at all laugh ) but the Kawai is well suited for classical music and contemporary music.

So, I would say that each of my pianos have a particular tone and touch and are suited for different types of music, styles and moods. Plus, though each of them are older models, they are in excellent condition.

Oh yea, I forgot about my Casio Privia PX310 digital! My two grandchildren call it the "funky piano". laugh

Time to 'fess up, Rick! Kindly stand up and state your name and "condition"- you know what I'm referring to, that acronym..... wink
The OP may as well be educated as to the proper term for this condition.

It can be dangerous to keep a Kawai and a Yamaha in the same room, you know. They tend to start fighting with each other at night, each claiming superiority and clamboring for more attention from the owner!

Mine are much friendlier. From time to time, I take them down to the neighborhood piano park, so they can play with the other pianos.

I have an Ibach and an Otto Bach (by Zimmermann). They Bach, but they don't bite. Oh yes, and I play Bach on both.

I have been avoiding to have Yamaha pianos in my home, because having Yamaha and non-Yamaha pianos in a same house would cause some complications particularly in Japan. 1)Yamaha pianos available in Japan are seasoned for wet environment, while non-Yamaha pianos are seasoned for non-wet environment, therefore we need individual rooms for the Yamaha and the non-yamaha in the same house. Relative humidity of the each room has to be controlled differently. 2)Yamaha tuners would like to do his job on the non-Yamaha piano as well, but most of the Yamaha tuners in Japan know less about non-Yamaha pianos than non-Yamaha tuners, therefore we have to hide the non-Yamaha pianos from his sight when they come to the home to tune the Yamaha pianos. I am believing "In Japan, do not let Yamaha technicians touch the non-Yamaha pianos" theory.

I have two pianos - a Boston grand and a Kawai upright and several violins and they are all in non-wet rooms. A technician who tunes these pianos is a Kawai MPA. No complications.

No I've got Two Yamaha grands as acoustics (non electric ...we shall not discuss my EP fetish because I've got another two Yamaha electric grands and a electric upright Yamaha too) but I've got a Mp10 Kawai DP somewhere if that counts.

I do not have a Yamaha and a Kawai, but I do have a Chickering model 125 grand and a Kawai KS-3F (50") upright. I also have a Steinway L, Steinway D, Yamaha C1 and Yamaha U1 at work. I love having several different instruments to practice on to develop the ear and technique. Out of all of the instruments I have available to me, I love my Chickering the most. There is something emotionally and musically deep about Chickering pianos. If I had more space I would have a couple more pianos...LOL!!

Wow, you have some nice pianos! (At home and at work smile )

Kind of reminds me of an old George Jones country song… “There’s nothing better once you’ve found the best”. laugh

I’m hoping that one of these days, I’ll actually be able to play a piano. But, if not, I’ve had a lot of fun with them already!

Welcome to the Piano World Forums, by-the-way!

Wonderful pictures Diane. This is a fun topic.

I wonder if A & E would be interested in a new series called "Piano Hoarders", or "PAS Intervention"? I think at least a few regulars from the Forum would qualify.
