I went into a shop in town, and tried out the YDP 161 I liked the action and the sound of its internal speakers. I have decided I would like a cabinet style DP. I was going to ask is there any major difference between the sound of this model and the YDP181, is it worth spending 200 pounds(ish) more on the YDP181 model? I would preferably like to spend as little as possible, but is there something in 181 model that makes it superior to the 161? I do not care whether it has a display screen or not.

Second question (When I get a chance I am going to try it out aswell) , but how light is the roland action? (2 models under roland i was considering was the rp301 and f120). I liked the YDP keys they were heavy, I liked the feel of it. Im looking for a model with heavy keys as opposed to lighter ones.

Thanks for reading, and Im glad I got to try out a DP today! smile

It seems that all of the mid-range console pianos have mediocre sound, so choosing is easy. Any one of them will do.

I think that the key feel is more important. Try the Roland and judge its keyboard. How does it compare to the Yamaha?

I think you will likely find the Roland keys lighter but try them out as some people like them better. I believe you get bigger speakers in the 181 but the action is the same. Glad you're having fun trying new dp's.

I just got a yamaha P155 which has the same keyboard as the 161 but smaller speakers and a few more sounds. It is a stage piano though you can also get a furniture style stand. If nicer speakers are a priority stick with the 161 as I'm sure they are more powerful and probably sound nicer. I mostly use mine as a secondary practice instrument with headphones so I am Ok with the smaller speakers on the P155.

Happy shopping!

thanks for the reply Zoe smile I did want good internal speakers, I don't want to buy external ones. The 20w sound was loud enough when I tried it out in the store, so I think 20w is sufficient. To my knowledge the speakers are the same in both the 161 and 181 model @ 20watts. It felt so good playing a DP in person, and I cant wait to get mine now! 2 months to go!!

Very nice piano, the YDP161 - GH keyboard, 128 note polyphony, good basic sounds and 20w + 20w amplifiers. It's a good choice in that price range - I don't see anything significantly better in the 181.

About the Roland - well, I didn't like the PHA alpha II at all but the PHA II, I liked so much, I paid a lot more than I originally planned to get it - best action around for less than £1500 as far as I'm concerned. But the Roland pianos you're talking about have a different keyboard in them, don't they? - ('Ivory G feel'?) - I'd be interested to try that too.

thanks tod! :)I really liked the action on the 161, and it is one im very keen on at the moment. Indeed Indeed, the roland models I mentioned have the Ivory G feel keys, I haven't heard mucha good about Ivory keys, but I'll see to them at some point. As far as I have gathered from here, they are slippery and it has a lighter action being a roland. Doesn't sound very appealing, to add to that they have 12w internal speakers compared to the 161/181 yamaha models. Now that does matter to me since I wont be purchasing external speakers, and neither do I plan to go the software route in the foreseeable future. I just want to sit down and play.

Aah indeed, the physical size of the 181 model speakers are apparently bigger hmm, well that makes things a bit more tricky for me..

Shokz, just sitting and playing is key! Just power on and everything you need is there! Not many of us have too much time to fiddle around. The 161 gives you a nice complete package. It was one of the first dps I tried and I still like it. I thought the feel and the sound was very good.

You should still try the other ones just for comparison. I'm guessing you will stick with the 161 but then you will also feel 100 percent about your purchase. I pretty much tried everything out there with the Kawai MP6 being the only one I couldn't get my hands on. In the end I had slight hesitation between a console Kawai and P155. In the end I got a good deal on the P155 so it all turned out ok.

Still if I bought the very first dp I tried I would have ended up with the Yamaha p95.(which is good in its price point) but I think I would have wanted to upgrade to a piano with a heavier feel sooner than later so I'm glad I took the time to check all the options out.

Again happy shopping. Let us know your thoughts on other dps you try and of course ultimately what you get.

I had a brief look when I went into the shop today (they specialise in yamaha). I saw the YDP141 and the 161. Few minutes ago I emailed them to let me know if they have the 181 in stock, If they do or they don't I will be revisiting the shop in 2 weeks for a further look into the 161 and hopefully 181 model. thank you

Have you considered Kawai CN33? - lots of happy owners it would seem. In the Yamahas I think I would go for the P155 and add the Yamaha wood stand for it later of I couldn't afford it straight away.

Once upon a time I did, But im just not keen on getting a Kawai also Its just a little above my budget. Thing is P155 with a pedal/and a decent wooden stand will get pricey, and its internal speakers are inferior to the YDP models and I wont be purchasing external speakers.

Yes, I looked at the p155 too but it would have cost about 100 euro more than the YDP161 - then you would need a stand and pedals and music stand etc etc - so much more costly.

I also seriously considered getting the Kawai CN33 online without trying it, simply because it comes so highly recommended on this forum, and it does LOOK so good in the photos. However, I did later try an MP6 (same keyboard action as CN33) and I did not like it - preferred Yamaha and much preferred Roland PHAII/III.

...yeah, it comes down to this: you've got to try them first before you buy. Then, once you have bought it, forget the rest and get on with playing it.

Thanks, I did see the P155 in stock in the shop, I wanted to try it out to see what it sounds like on loudest volume, but it was placed right next to the reception desk so I thought I'd leave it. Next time I visit the shop I will see if I can try it out, to see for myself if its loudest volume is sufficient or not. They keys are same for the p155/ydp161 but there's something different no? I read something about the YDP models trying to be like an acoustic, like when you hit a key it hits some pad or something. Is it different for the P155?
