So guess we should start the next month's bar and since nobody else has done it yet I'll do the honors again! =) I'm submitting the Titanic song lol. U guys hear they are making it in 3D? Anyone actually going to see it? I'll pass myself. Not a big fan of the movie but I love the music! I of course was playing around with my new music software also when I did this. Hope you enjoy the audio editing too! Love my new software =) I think the sound in piano is better as well!

ladyPayne ~ Good job on that it sounds great. I will definitely NOT be going to see Titanic in 3D. Some of my family members are big fans of the movie so I've watched that ship sink more times than I care to remember.

Excellent job ladypayne! I am so happy for your excitement with your DAW. Allthough I do love seeing leonardo de craprio drown, I cannot watch it again.
factoid: Robin Glibb of the bee gees will be cashing in on the Anniversary of 1,496 lost souls this aprill, when it is exactly a hundred years since the demise of the titanic.
He is releasing an albumn he has been working on with ( I believe) The london symphony orchestra, or philharmonic, cant quite remember.
This Aprill, being the 100th year "anniversary" of that tragic event, will no doubt see "all things Titanic" being sold left right and centre, cue the return of the "Pink and pleasent plastic Icon company of Del Rio texas"
who will no doubt be selling Pink and pleasent plastic replica Titanics for just two dollars+ PP. All items come complete with fully removable lost souls.

Very beautifully played, ladypayne. It's one of those strange coincidences for me personally, that the piano bar starts with this song. I was watching an interview with a man here in Iceland, who survived after his ship sunk south-east of Norway. He witnessed his shipmates being taken by the ocean and one of them died in his arms.
The interview can be watched with english subtitles (might be unaccessible because of overload.)

Pianotehead: My grandfather, (skipper of the Stella Carina) lost his life taking supplies to Iceland in the 2ndWW...
He was taking passage on board the SS Bellona11, 8pm, 8th oct 1940... ten souls lost.
Three months earlier he had rescued 10 men from the north sea when the SS Albano drifted into a minefield and sank in less than two mins.
He picked up men out of the freezing water at night, in the dark, some of them clinging on to live mines, screaming. They wrote letters to the newspapers describing how they owed their lives to his remarkable seamanship.
No medal, no hollywood movie.

I'd like to follow up Ladypayne's somewhat nautical song with another somewhat nautical tune. This song was thought to be written in 1913 and was used as a farewell song for Māori soldiers leaving for the 1st World War.

Rostosky, I'm very sorry to hear that. I'm sure many people of the UK have grandparents and even parents who died in the war, because Britain was in the forefront of the battle, along with the United States of course. My father's brother was in a boat attacked by a German submarine (survived), but apart from sailors, our people were not put in danger at the time. At least one Icelander was in the RAF.
But sorry, it was not my intention to mislead the piano bar, just had to get this off my chest.

Thanks Rostosky, didn't know this. Bill, I have this song on a Bing Crosby disk, very beautiful. You sing and play it excellently, as always in your covers.
BillM, I enjoyed that. I like that your playing is smooth, with no hesitations.
It reminds me of Aloha Oe, a farewell song from Hawaii.

Bill, um, I remember singing songs like this when I took some private singing lessons years ago, but I know this song from early cinema. I hope you are enjoying your lessons, because if this is the result, I sure am. Like LP, I love your versatility. Is there any style you can't play?

I may be totally wrong so please correct me if I am being presumptuous, but I am sticking my neck out here, I dont think Bill does "grunge" or "death metal" Not that he couldnt if he wanted to, I think he just chooses not to.

The only presumption might be that everyone would agree on the same performance style actually constituting music. I should have been more specific and said "any style of music...." I think anything that Bill heard as music he could play as music. But then again, he might be able to take something that someone else didn't hear that way and play it in a way that made it make musical sense even to them. [lol]
Haven't posted any recording in a while. I found this recording on my digital piano of the first few pages of Rach's famous prelude. I was quite surprised at how good it sounded, at least in humble opinion, and had to share it with you even though it's just the alla marcia part and start of the meno mosso.
Haven't work on it for quite some time but I'm picking it up again and was surprised at how well I still remembered the notes. I also found a recording of the moonlight sonata that I apparently played better back when I first stared practicing that piece.
edit, working link

GrouchoMarX, lovely rach.!! May I ask how you got it out of your digital piano, did you for instance record it playing back with a mic?
OR, did you send the midi into a music program, and if so which program?
Just for info as it sounds very good.....

I did play the part on a digital piano and recorded it with a zoom. I then added the zoom recording to the program and used a midi keyboard to play the oboe part in the program. I did a little audio editing to make the piano recording sound better then I exported it all as an mp3. Could be more work then actually playing the song! hmm. Either way it is fun to do =)

I connect the digital piano directly to my computer and record the track with a program called audacity. Then I just export it as a MP3 file. I should have recorded it with a bit less volume as there seems to be some unwanted noise at the ff parts.

Thanks. I never initially intended to complete the whole piece I just wanted to be able to play the first few pages up until the meno mosso part. But I've really started digging the middle part so I might learn it as well. Unfortunately it contains some really tricky parts (inner melodies and such). But if I ever finish this piece I'll be sure to post the whole thing.

That's quite an accomplishment in itself, really great!
Glen, you've really mastered the art of playing these jazzy tunes with ease. There's something really natural about the way you paly, the music just flows... I take it you've been playing the piano a long time.

Groucho, Nikolaj, BeccaBb - Thanks so much for listening and your encouraging words. LCOSF is not generally popular like most standards, but it does get played now and again on our local jazz station. Bob Dorough wrote a number of fine pieces.
Groucho, I've been playing off and on for a number of years, off most of last year, now just ramping back up, getting back in shape. Nikolaj - glad to introduce you to another beebop/cool jazz composer, even though that piece is a ballade. BeccaBb - so happy you liked it and that it reminds you of something you'd hear in a Piano Bar - thank you so very much!
I think I'm going to contribute for the first time too. This is a simplified version of a ragtime tune called Champagne Rag by Joseph Lamb. I was going to upload The Entertainer, but the red light seriously threw me off that one for some reason. Maybe later, when I get my nerves under control.

Okay this is the Minuet I've been working on. I'm having a lot of issues with slowing down (timing) and my slurs. I have to play with my eyes closed and count in order to prevent myself from speeding up. This peice has really been a thorn in my side with those two issues so any help appreciated!

Becca,
Good start on the minuet. I noticed you did not have your music open in front of you, is there some reason for this? I hope you don't mind a suggestion to help with what looked like a little tentativeness. I really think you would benefit from 2 or 3 days of playing the minuet VERY SLOWLY and VERY LOUD, making sure you go all the way to the keybed with every note. The idea is to do this at whatever pace will allow you to do it note perfect. You may want to break it into sections and do them individually first. Don't try to make it sound musical during this kind of practice. After 3 days or so I think you will find it much easier to play it with confidence.

Thanks Jim. I have the music closed because if I read the notes I speed up! So I closed my book and just played and counted. I will try a few days of Loud and slow. Slow has been an issue with this. Thanks for the suggestions. I will give them a shot!

Hi BeccaBb~ That was really very good and you were carefully listening to what you were playing, the music.
Based on what's been said, of any suggestion I could give you at this stage would be to use a metronome to help you keep tempo - start very slowly at first and pay more attention to the notes and tempo. In a very short while you will be able to internalize the tempo and once again bring out the mood of the music you intend to express and bring it up to your desired speed.
Your results may vary, but in my experience, learning to keep tempo with a metronome is helping me to break bad habits of struggling with time.
LP - can't seem to get the box link to work - just me?
The Link should work. I just checked it. Maybe try again? Let me know if there are issues.
LP - the problem is with my main computer - for some reason all of a sudden it will not access Box, either thru links here or from the icon on my desktop - my other computer will - weird...time for NerdAlert or is it Call-a-Nerd?

GrouchoMarx, that was beautiful. You played with energy and flair. I love Rachmaninov.
BeccaBb, well done, you played at a steady tempo throughout with accurate note values and no hesitations.

This is a song writting project of mine that failed because I never could put lyrics with it that I was satisfied with. So I recorded it as a piano solo.
Joe, that is a very pretty melody. The theme paints a wonderful picture in my mind.
Regarding the lyrics,,,with your compositions, (I listened to all of them on your very fine SoundClick page by the way - fantastic!), do you pick the lyrics first, then compose the melody, or write the composition, then pick the lyrics, or something in between? Your music is wonderful! Thank you for sharing your fine talent!
Studio Joe, that is lovely. Thank you for posting it. I liked the lyrical melody, and the accompaniment went with it just right. I could happily listen to it over and over.
This is not the only thing I liked about it, but I especially want to mention that I liked that the melody stood out, rather than being lost in a too-loud left hand and a welter of undifferentiated runs and fills.

Glen, usually I get an idea for lyric first and then put it to music. Sometimes I get the melody first by doodling at the keyboard.
Thanks for listening and feedback.

Sounds great everyone! Someday I will get up the nerve to post something.
Becca- one thing my teacher said to me, about speeding up and slowing down, is that I knew or was more comfortable with some parts of the song more than others. If I didn't know a part very well I'd slow down and when I got to a part I was comfortable with I'd speed up. All this time I thought I had timing issues but my teacher kindly told me it was not the case-phew. So, what I do now is if there are parts of a song that I can't play as smoothly as the rest I will isolate that part of the song and practice it over and over until is becomes as smooth and familiar as the rest. Don't know if that helps at all. But you sound great!

LadyPayne: Loved your rendition of My Heart Will Go On - Very cool what you're doing with your new software with the oboe and everything!
Bill: I really enjoyed Now is the Hour - wonderful haunting arrangement. It's great to hear lovely new (for me) songs like this.
Groucho: Your Rach Prelude was terrific! Doesn't sound easy but you did a great job!
Nikolaj: Champagne Rag was great - no sign of the dreaded red light there!
Inlanding: I really enjoyed your Snowed In, as well as your other compositions. Just amazing how your fingers glide so smoothly over the keyboard.
Well, I think I said I was done with the movie themes last month, but I was recently watching some figure skating on TV and thought of this one:
ICE CASTLES
And here's a little clip of the original movie from the 70's, which I haven't seen on TV for ages.. It's the story about a young skater who loses her eyesight in an accident.

Studio Joe - lovely original tune, well played - sounds like a movie theme - maybe if you can think of it in those terms, and can associate it with a specific movie in some way, the lyrics will "write themselves" (with a little assist from you, of course).

Glen - nice, easy, delightful bluesy improv - I can picture that playing in the background on a snowy day in a mountain cabin with an adult beverage in hand, a warm fire crackling in the fireplace , and an even warmer lady snuggled up by your side...

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. Much appreciated! Groucho: Ha, yeah I suppose it does. There are actually quite a few ragtime renditions of the Mario theme on Youtube, so you're not the only one who thought of that. Trap: Yes, I did have it memorized. Only way I could play something like that. When I play from sheets it's much slower and insecure, and I certainly could't do it for a piece like this.
And I like how the snow (it's outside my window too!) is inspiring people with wintermusic. Elssa, Ice Castles sounds exactly like its title, twinkling icicles and bluish-white spires reaching for the sky. Glen, Snowed In is a very calming piece. I get almost the exact feeling, Trap described, being curled up snuggly inside watching the landscape turn white and beautiful outside.
Trap the Minuet is from Faber Accelerated Adventures 1, otherwise it doesn't say who it's by.
The unattributed pieces in Piano Adventures are by Nancy Faber.

This is my first full piece on the piano. There are loads of mistakes and for some unknown reason, once I hit record I was a bag of nerves. Also I messed up the video so have just put a picture of my piano on there. Any comments would be appreciated!

PaddyD, welcome to the piano bar!
That was a very nice piece. (I don't know the song so a first time listen for me!) We all become a nervous when recording. They call it "the battle of the red dot" on here.

PaddyD, you played that really well. If this is really your first full piece then I'm all the more impressed. Really good audio quality as well, I take it it's a digital piano?

Thank you very much. It's my first full piece, the only other one I know is a few bars of Swan Lake. It is a digital piano (the picture in the video is one I took of mine) a Yamaha YDP161
PaddyD ~ First, welcome to the February Piano Bar! Very nice going on your first full piece to submit! Look forward to more from you. You played it with sensitivity and it was clear you were listening to what you were playing - always easier said than done, but it shows. Good job!
Thank you, all, so much, for the kind comments on Snowed In. Trap, you must know me…
In the shadow of a previously well-played New Age-style piece - from last night and a few days earlier, here is what might be considered "Alternative" ideas I've been developing - hope you find it relaxing

Wow, the performances have been fantastic on the piano bar this month!
And, Glen, your Steinway sounds wonderful! No wonder the Steinway pianos are so popular (and so expensive )
Speaking of pianos, here is a little something different... it is a short video of my new-to-me 1969 model Kawai upright I bought a few weeks ago. I didn't need another piano, but I saw it on Craigslist and it was part of an estate sale just a few miles from my home... so, I went to take a look and came home with it! (Well, me and the piano mover )
My playing ain't all that good in the video (or any other time )but the video does showcase the piano.
Here is another submission from me. It is a latino song called Corazon de Nino. It was more difficult for me to play than the previous songs I've put up. It was also a bit of a pain to record but I managed somehow. So hard trying not to miss those notes! =)
Inlanding: Very nice on all of your pieces. Lovely playing. Nikolaj. Nice bouncy Rag! Fun tune BeccaBb: Nice Start on this song. Keep up the good work! Studio Joe: Very beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Elssa: Really pretty song. Wonderful playing. PaddyD: Very nice on Einaudi. Great playing! Welcome to the piano bar! Rickster: Must be so wonderful for you to be able to get these pianos. Sounds fun! Looks like it is in pretty decent condition for being so old.

I hope this isn't a duplicate post (maybe I didn't hit 'submit'). Anyway here goes. After trying several songs today and making mistake after mistake I tried this, the simplest song in my repertoire and even it is a bit hesitant in a couple of spots and the vocal a bit shaky ... ah well.

Capt'n, "Smile" is one of my favorites. You did a good job with the piano part for less than a year learning to play. I smiled at your fingering on the ending arpeggio Sometimes I do something like that.
The voice sounded good to me. I really enjoyed it.

Hopefully illustrating the importance of going back and reworking pieces you had previously labored over and which you had polished off fairly decently, I submit these new recordings of a couple of "songs of inspiration" that I had originally tackled about 4 years ago.
I guess you could say that this process of reviewing would be the "one step back" that helps in several important ways the "two steps forward" aspect of one's forward progress in technical development (and musicality).
This first piece is from 17th century Germany and is believed to have originated with Jesuit monks, but other than that it's authorship is unknown.
The second piece was composed by "Alice Hawthorne", which was a name that one Septimus Winner wrote under for a number of his compositions.Winner holds the dubious distinction of being the only composer who was ever charged with treason for a song he wrote. During the Civil War President Lincoln had fired General George McClellan for general incompetency (so to speak). However, George was popular with the people and there was an outcry of protest. Winner joined in by writing a song called "Give Us Back Our Old Commander: Little Mac, the People's Pride" which sold over 80,000 copies (sheets). He was arrested and charged with treason, but subsequently released when he promised to destroy all remaining copies. The following is not that song, but one that he is much better known for today (at least as Alice Hawthorne):

Captain Kawai - I hadn't heard that in a long time. It was great, including the vocals. The singers here on the ABF, with you now included, are some of my favorites (I don't usually listen to a lot of vocals).
JF - that took me back to my childhood in the Baptist church Wonderful hymns, and reverently played. Beautiful.
I was thinking about putting this piece up for the recital. However; This one has too many mistakes. So I'll put it up for the piano bar, and hope it is ready for another recital down the road;)
Ladypayne~Corazon was fantastic. You always bring new, nicely played pieces to the Piano Bar! I like it a lot.
Trap~ fine hymnal renditions. It's so good you are still playing previously mastered pieces - it keeps your ever-growing repertoire fresh and strong. Appreciate the brief historical descriptions, too - it gives a deeper meaning to the music when you know some of its history.
Captain Kawai~ Welcome to the Feb Piano Bar! It's been a long time since hearing, Smile. Excellent job accompanying yourself - that's got to be so difficult - singing and playing at the same time! Great job - look forward to hearing more of your music!
Augustina~loved thé Jeux d' eau piece. Sounds like there are some tricky sections in there - very pretty melody.

Hi everybody, I haven't posted since Christmas as I have been going strong with my exam pieces I am working on. I just tried recording them off my new to me digital and posted them to BoxNet. It was a bit faster than video editing. I linked to them in a different thread and thought I could post them here as well for comments. The Wild Horseman sounds a bit like he's stumbling around (LOL!) but I thought it was ok to post for comments. My exam isn't until April so I have time to listen to comments and make adjustments.
Also, though I've not posted comments yet I have been listening to all the Piano Bar entries this month and last and have been very impressed and motivated by all of you!

Hi Glen and thanks so much. If I can control my nervousness I think I can do ok. Somehow I have to pretend I am alone in the room or something because I get so nervous and then my hands get really cold and then things start going crazy! But I practice just going up to the piano and playing and I think that's helping quite a bit. I appreciate your vote of Confidence!

Zoe~ I think if you add to your preparation routine by playing your pieces in front of others, in venues other than yours, on different keyboards, and into your recorder, you will find yourself gaining overall confidence in very beneficial ways. The earlier you practice those things, the more comfortable you might become as it pertains your performing in front of others in an unfamiliar space. Some piano retailers have a space for recitals - perhaps you can ask them if you can borrow some time to prepare your recital pieces. It's a great experience.

Glen - there is something about your playing that amazes me. Like a magic touch or something I can't even describe or find the right words for. I listen to you play and I think all these things like very nice. Oh that note sounded nice, oh wow that part was beautiful, how does he do that. Keeps me listening to each end every Note and each one sounds so special. And of course the result of all those wonderful individual parts is like magic music.

Nicolaj - very nice. This was fun and catchy and nicely played I really enjoyed it.
BeccaB - nice! I have some thoughts that may help you with timing. Play with a metronome. do a few times through the piece with it on and then turn it off and see if you can keep the timing right. Then repeat if necessary. You will find this helps to get it internalized better. Also try counting while you play. This way you really have to concentrate on the notes. Do small sections at a time until you keep the rhythm/timing going at a steady pace. It was nicely done though and you are doing well!

ZoeCalgary, I enjoyed listening to your pieces. The Wild Horseman is a real beast, and you played it with aplomb. Who is the composer of the sonatina?

PaddyD, that was incredible. Smoothly played. Nerves did not show, and if there were mistakes, you covered them well because I didn't hear anything that sounded like a mistake.
What is it called, and who is it by? Or is it your own composition?

Hi Glen,'thanks for those practice ideas. I am going to check into renting a piano room with a grand just for fun at the conservatory. I do know of one retailer who does have a performance hall. Not sure if they would let me use it though. I'll have to ask around and see what I come up with. I usually practice when the house is empty and aside from my husband and kids I don't really play for anybody except for my teacher. I need to change that.

Inlanding - Around the Corner sounds very much like the kind of music one hears in those upscale gift shops often found in tourist towns. I can imagine sounds of nature in the background (crickets, soft waterfalls, etc.) Since I have a fairly severe case of tinnitus I didn't have to imagine the crickets. A thoughtful and contemplative tune.
Nameless has a more bluesy, soulful feel to it. Perfect for a late night bar scene in a film noir. As always, your playing is sublime.

As always Glen very nice playing and I really like the sound of your piano. It just mesmorizes me. I wish I knew how to come up with pieces like this that have a unique characteristic.

Thanks Glen - I learned early in my studies the importance of review - it reinforces techniques you encountered before and gives you a good chance to typically do a better job on pieces you might not have been totally satisfied with before.
It also gives you some easier pieces to have fun with, play with more confidence and musicality, and enjoy more completely while you're knocking yourself out working haltingly and frustratingly on the harder pieces in your current repertoire.

Thanks, Zoe.
In hind sight, I wish I had not posted that video on the piano-bar thread. It was kind of out-of-place/OT, and my playing was terrible. But the piano does sounds great!

Nice Kawai piano, Rick. I just acquired (gratis) a perfectly neglected, all original 1931 Story and Clark baby grand to rebuild. Everything about it will require attention, from the lyre on up - gonna be a fun one!

I don't really know where to begin in commenting on all the other contributors, except to say that after listening to them all each has something unique, like Inlanding's musical musings or Joe's melody, Trapper's spiritualness, Elssa's busy fingers. Guitar styles (or at least those I am familiar with) fall into pretty broad and recognisable genres, but piano seems to open itself to much more variation and nuance.
Smile, for anyone interested, is actually a tune written by Charlie Chaplin with lyrics added later by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. The version that I hear in my inner ear is Nat King Cole's from when I was very young. Thanks for the compliments ... but I aim to do better next time.

Glen that is some great blues playing. In Fmin? I really like how you don't just keep coming back to the same chords but really move around with inversions. I wish I could look over your shoulder and see what you are playing.
You must live in Easter CO. I have a niece in Aspen that says it's still pretty dry and they missed that storm.

BillM - yet another fine interpretation - I really like how you put your heart into every song you sing - and I really do admire your accompaniment style greatly - excellent job on this touching tribute to MM.
Speaking of the Recital, I didn't see your name among the first 33 entries - you are participating hopefully?

Bill~ This is one of my favorites of yours. It conjures up so many memories and you play and sing it so very well. I play your YouTube one regularly. Great work!
Peyton~ Thanks for the kind words. Yes, the improv is in f-min. Glad you picked up on the chords - the goal was to mix voicings that sounded decent together and to vary them from one round to the next - easier said than done.
I live near Denver. The storm was to our south (not coming from the north which would produce mountain snows), and when that happens, the mountains generally get no snow and Denver-points east get the brunt of the storm. The foothill towns got over three feet. I had almost two feet at my place. The ski areas do need snow, so hopefully they will get some good snow for the spring ski season.

BillM,
I too thought your Candle in the Wind was really outstanding and a great showcase for your singing and playing skills.
I have a question... where do you get you arrangements? Do you work them up yourself from leadsheets? If so I have to add that to your other obvious talents.
Jim

Paddy- That is some very lovely playing. I would never know you were a "bag of nerves" and any mistakes are barely noticable. Nice recording too. The piano sounds great.
This song is from a piano book my sister got me while she was in China. I posted it a few months ago. I thought I would post a better version of the song. Also the name of the song is Jiedao De Jimo. Last time I posted this I just called it "Chinese Song" Since I didn't know the English name of it:) It is from composer Shi Jin.

Supertorpe - Excellent first submission to the piano bar and very nicely done. I really enjoyed it. Just the other day I was wondering if I should get some Bach Inventions. I think you've convinced me!
MaryAnn - I enjoyed your piece very much too. I've not heard this before. I really like how you did the melody.
BillM - Candle In The Wind - Bill as always very nice. Your playing on this piece was super enjoyable and excellent.
Augustina - Jiedao De Jimo; I really enjoyed this piece. I'm not sure if I heard it before but it was so peaceful to listen to and so nicely played. Thanks for reposting it.

Here's a rough rendition of a quirky Neil Finn song called 'Pineapple Head' (inspired by his son's ramblings when suffering a fever). Very basic. Nowhere near as fluid as BillM or relaxed as Supertorp. It's in 6/8 which is not that common in pop/rock tunes. I was recording something a little more melodic but abandoned it because I kept fluffing parts (maybe next time). Not that this is without its faults. That red recording light makes it so hard!

I forgot who had the first one, Oboe & piano from Titanic: it was great!
Joe, Bill, supertorpe, .. ok, too many too list. I'm going to be lazy and just say: everyone--nice playing!
Wonderful music!

CaptainKawai - Really fun piece! I've never heard it before but it suits your style nicely. I also played guitar for many years before teaching myself piano and think it really helped with understanding chords and rhythms, etc. Keep up the good work and keep the tunes coming.

supertorpe - I watched all 3 of your videos and like ZoeCalgary am impressed with how well you play after only less than 2 years. You have a delicate and light touch and play without any signs of tension. Very nice.

Elssa - the combination of your excellent moving bassline and the brushes and cymbals percussion is a delight. Love the cat's contribution at the end - was that a major 9th? This was fun all around.
I was hoping to get my Chopin Nocturne recorded in time for the quarterly recital, but my recorder just came last week and I left the next day for holidays, and won't be returning until after the deadline, unfortunately. I did, however, get an easy little piece recorded as I was testing the settings on my R-05, so i thought I'd at least share it here . Enjoy -- it's Petites litanies de Jesus by Grovlez, from L'almanach aux images.

Yes, Bill, it does help and makes us not quite "absolute beginners" when we sit down at the piano.
MaryAnne ~ very nice work on your first contribution to the February Piano Bar.
Augustina ~ that was a very pretty piece of music - this one is much more refined than the first one you submitted - very excellent!
Supertorpe ~ Welcome to the Piano Bar! Very fine renditions of Bach and Telemann. I think it's the first time I've heard a Telemann. Yann Tiersen was quite pretty. You play in a very relaxed manner - very nice.
CK ~ I liked the Neil Finn piece - your voice was perfect!
Elssa ~ Way to go on Duke Ellington - I like the the drums that help you keep tempo.
Lady Chen ~ Petites litanies was quite pretty. You should submit that piece to the upcoming e-cital and share it with the world. So nicely played - thank you and welcome to the February Piano Bar. Glen
One of my piano goals for 2012 was to participate in the Piano Bar at least 5 times.
I just switched my recital piece and decided that the "reject" could be my first submission here. It is a poetic little piece, called Romanza, by Daniel Steibelt. It is from Joy of First Classics Book 2
Thank you, Joe and Steve for the kind, encouraging comments - very much appreciated!
Well, well - Romanza! Absolutely beautiful. You play it with such sensitivity. Welcome to the Piano Bar. Bravo, Cheryl!! Look forward to hearing much more from Italy.

Well, I should be more hesitant considering some of the players here, but after working on this all day today I thought well, why not? So I recorded it, with a few warts. I've always wanted to be able to play it and now I almost can!

Inlanding - your three piano recordings were a perfect way to start my Sunday morning. Terrific articulation - I like the playful/jazzy treatment of the bridge and last verse of Stormy Weather.

Yep. I was drafted when I was about 13 at a small country Baptist church and was still playing in church 25 years later.

Still working on improving this... it has some glitches and needs overall structure... but I wanted to put something up for the bar if I could. Only get to work on "jazzy stuff" in the evening, after all "real" practice is finished. This is Dan Coates arrangement from his "Top 50" book.
I have to say I like your Minuet better than mine! LOL The Sonatina has a neat little bounce to it. I can see why the Wild Horseman is tricky! That is rather quick. I hope you find that your making progress? I liked them.

JimF - That was lovely. Dan Coates has some great arrangements from what I hear on the ABF, but in addition yo played it very well - very sensitive, a little wistful.
This is one of those curl up on your couch while it rains and listen to while reading type of songs. I found it very relaxing. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for all the compliments on my 3 pieces folks. They made my day!!
BeccaBb - yes they are coming along pretty well. My homework this week was to slow down the Wild Horseman and work on LH only! (cause I was messing it all up in my lesson!) So that's what I've been doing. She says if it was really solid I should be able to play it slow or fast. I slowed it down and it gave me some confidence back and uncovered some weak spots. But its hard not to speed it up! The melody switches to the LH and it has to be as solid as your right. She's right of course! It's hard realizing you don't know what you don't know!! Haha!

What good atmosphere permeates this bar I thank you all for the warm welcome.
I have a good time listening contributions from the last pages. Just to comment a few:
Billm - some day I would like to be able to make arrangements with the ease and style that you demonstrate in this interpretation of Candle in the Wind.
Elsa - Impeccable, though ... I've been hypnotized with the... ping-pong light metronome: D
Glen and JimF - I have benn listening "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set", "Stormy Weather" and "Shadow of Your Smile" and suddenly, I have placed in a restaurant, dimly lit, listening to that beautiful music. "UnsquareBlues": what technique and sense of rhythm. Impressive.
Becca - The title is "Le Matin" by Yann Tiersen, from his album "Les Retrouvailles".
BillM - Wow! thanks so much for the encouragement and I am so glad listening to those tunes helped to start your day
CK - The Long and Winding Road was excellent. It is interesting to note this was the Beatles last single and their 20th #1 US hit. You do a great job of keeping time while you sing. Incredible how you, Bill, and Rick do that with such ease. Thanks for bringing this to the fore - brings back some very fond memories.
JimF ~ Shadow was really good. Lots of dynamic nuance. The hesitations fit the melody/lyrics very nicely. It sounds like you are listening to the music as you play it - very excellent work!
Supertorpe ~ Fabulous work on The Entertainer! You played with such precision. One of my favorite Scott Joplin pieces. Keep it up!

Glen, thanks. I "found" that piece while I was avoiding doing an assigned piece and just fell for it immediately!
Captain Kawai - singing and playing - I'm impressed. I can't manage that. Nice job!
Jim -what a treat to hear your Shadow of A Smile, after hearing you talk about it over in AOTW! Beautifully done.
Supertorpe - You're doing wonderfully well - I really liked your Top of the Morning piece, I'd never heard it before. Lovely job on the Tiersen and the Entertainer.
There are a stunning number of performances in this thread already! I hope to enjoy more of them soon!

Thanks Rickster, Cathy, Glenn, BillM, Cheryl, and Supetorpe for your kind comments.
Cheryl - Really enjoyed Romanza and can't wait to hear the Blues piece in a couple of days.
Supertorpe - After listening to your Bach and Teleman, I was going to comment on how you really seem to have the ear for Baroque music, bringing out both hands beautifully. Then to my surprise you put up the Joplin and lo and behold I can hear that baroque technique transferring beautifully over to The Entertainer. Very nice work.

Hi Zoe, I did double check - thanks for looking. It seemed fine to me, and I see that about 23 people have looked at it, so I think the link is ok. But I'll try again, just in case....

Casinitaly, I loved your presentation, Romanza! And, it's nice to see you participating in the ABF piano bar!
And, Glen, all your pieces are great! You sound like a pro, no doubt! What are you doing on the ABF, you and several others here! Never mind, I meant that as a complement!
I know I don’t comment on everyone’s presentations like I should, but I do listen to them. I've been a little blue myself here lately.
Keep up the wonderful playing all!

Glen - I just listened to UnsquareBlues. It was great! Do you play profesionnaly? Did I ask you this already? Just the ease and dynamics of your playing is awesome. Was this your own composition? Sweet!

Casinitaly - Very nice. I'm not familiar with this piece but I liked it alot. Made me wish it was longer. I didn't want it to end.
P.S. your link on my computer worked fine. It wasn't working on my phone for some reason which is how I usually listen/read PW. Same for Glen's 3rd piece. Worked fine here. Go figure. Glad I didn't miss out on these 2 though.

Thanks, all for kind comments - so much fun playing the walking bass style. Bill: Yes, Gwen said she was shooting for a C9 chord there (or some kind of jazzy chord ). =^o^=
Inlanding: Very nice noodling/improv with Stormy Weather.

Thanks Casinitaly and Zoe Calgary. I think my beginning by playing guitar and singing at the same time many, many years ago is part of the answer. But equally impressive to me are those of you who play triads in the one hand and the melody in the right. So, when I think about that ... maybe my voice is my right hand?
Rickster and Zoe, thanks for your feedback Glad you liked my little piece.
Captain Kawai, I can sing and play guitar....but I can't sing and play piano! I think you'll just have to accept that you are talented
Glen - I listened to your trio of pieces - as always, your music charms and delights me. I had never heard the QJ piece before, so that was new. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is an old favourite of mine - I loved your version. The Unsquare Blues was great I was bouncing about in time with the music!
Elssa: What are you doing the rest of your life - Lovely piece - I especially like the way it starts. I am amazed that you can change settings without missing a beat. I also went back to see what you were talking about when you mentioned the walking bass-line. The A-Train piece was great fun! Well done indeed!
Augustina - your Cirque du soleil piece is very pretty. I bet you won't have to work too much longer with it before you feel satisfied. I think you've got a really good handle on it. I will look forward to hearing your next recording!

CK, Zoe, Cheryl, Rick - no pro here, and I can't quit my day job, darn it! Still, lots of things to learn. Unsquare was an idea waiting to get out. Thank you for the super kind words of encouragement!
Glen- that's really sweet. There are elements of it that remind me of your Sun-up /Sun Rising pieces, - I think the tones of optimism and the sense of well being are what come through here.
I'm sure anyone would be happy to be lulled to sleep with this one!

Thanks, Casinitaly! I got used to making the quick changes and "pushing buttons" from playing electric organ for many years starting when I was a kid.. I also picked up some bass lines such as the walking bass by playing the pedals.
I really loved your "Romanza" - beautiful piece and very fine playing!

Glen,
Lullaby was very sweet. Particularly liked the last 40 seconds or so, when you used the space between the notes with great effectiveness. Nicely done, as always.

As for your multi-tasking skills -good think you started young! I can't imagine how complicated it is playing an organ - too many things to have to concentrate on! I find 2 hands and 1 pedal are more than enough to keep my mind hopping!
I'm just learning about bass lines and was watching your fingers very closely in A-train I was really pleased I was able to recognize what you were doing - that was fun!

As a teen in the 80's, I took organ lessons from the regular organist at Radio City Music Hall. I asked him how he could play that monster organ there, I'd be too intimidated, and he said it was actually easier because there were a lot of "tricks" you could do with it, like change settings with your foot so you can keep playing with your hands and not break the flow, etc.
That's great that you recognized the bass pattern.. I have a couple favorites that I use quite a bit - lots of fun to play.
Nice playing everyone. Here are a few comments. The piano bars sure have been busy the last few months. It's great!
casinitaly: very pretty! Very enjoyable. Inlanding: Loved your unsquareblues tune. Nicely done. CaptainKawai: Wonderful singing and playing. BillM: Really enjoyed your piano playing and of course your singing too! Elssa: Nice playing on the Romeo and Juliet theme. It's a very pretty song. It is on my to do list. supertorpe: Very pretty on your piano pieces. Welcome to the piano bar too! LadyChen: Like this one. Beautifully played! TrapperJohn: I do like the hymns that you have been putting up lately. Do keep them coming! Augustina: Nice job on ur songs too sis!
I just submitted this to the recital, but I couldn't play back the audio in the application and accidentally hit the submit button, so I'm not sure it will take and there's no time to correct it now.
This song was immortalized by the great Marlena Dietrich in The Blue Angel (1930) and introduced her to an American audience. The part of the song everyone knows is my own arrangement, but the long intro is from the original 1930’s sheet music, the lyrics to which were not the same as those used in the film (the sheet music’s were much more sentimental). I have tendonitis so I couldn’t practice it as much as I would have liked and stumbled on the ending, but It was so perfect for Valentines Day that I couldn’t resist sharing it.

Is there a record for the longest piano bar in any single month? Its still the middle of February and wow...so many pages...I will admit I haven't been able to keep up with this month's bar, nowhere near. But
CaptaimKawai I really liked "Pineapple Head" I've never heard it before but I used to listen to alot of Crowded House in high school and your voice is a good match to Neil's. I'm going to have to look the original up.

InLanding - nice work on Lullaby. There's something suggestive of what I understand is called 'americana' in the middle of that tune (approx 0:50 to 1:20ish).
I have never seen the monthly bar shrink so low in the thread line-up this early in the month. I just had to bring it back.
CaptainK -- Thank you for listening to my video and for your appreciative words. I also appreciated your bar submissions this month. I particularly enjoyed "Smile." Since, on doctors orders, I'm not allowed to play with my right hand for a month and you sounded so good singing and accompanying yourself basically with only chords, you inspired me to attempt to do the same using my left hand. I going to use it with the chord function on my digital to play root chords and and to play inversions with a stride bass note when I have to. What a concept!-- so simple--but I would have never thought of it without your song. It really made me smile.
...I particularly enjoyed "Smile." .... accompanying yourself basically with only chords...
Thanks. Chords are all I can really do at present. Take care of your hands. For me, I have to watch out for my back.
Thanks:) Its really more my arm. Well at least you've got them so you can play them all dead on in time and sing to boot, which is more than I can say (note, I aimed to do both when I started my song and wound up doing neither) ...Besides, you really don't need much more than that and rhythm to play the songs you're playing as accompaniment and you've got plenty of the latter.
But if you wouldn't mind my making a suggestion, you might want to put the link to your Youtube channel in your footer so it shows up in every post you make. This is especially helpful if your posting multiple songs in the Bar. I had to search through the entire thread looking for all of your songs.
I've been listening all week to the e-cital - such good music from around the globe!
Starr Keys~ I hope your arm continues to show signs of improvement. Your music is fantastic, so you must take it easy in your recovery so you can continue creating, then playing your wonderful arrangements. Selfishly, I am so very glad you were able to be active enough.
CK - Thanks so much for listening to and commenting on Lullaby! I am interested to know how you are using the term "americana" to describe a section from the :40 mark or so. http://www.box.com/s/i6vyabhccmzqksqp7fyo

It's a term I've heard used to describe styles evocative of old folk tunes, hymns, traditional and early blues etc, mixed together (eg. Randy Newman). For example the phrases at 54-56 secs, 1:09-1:13 and 1:24-1:26. Perhaps I am using the term incorrectly.

That was my general intention for the tune, since I am influenced by so many styles. I'd just not ever heard the descriptive term before. Very much appreciated! Glen

I was working on this at the weekend. In My Life. One of my favourite (or perhaps most favourite) Beatle songs. To think, Lennon was only mid twenties when he wrote this.
(If I keep posting at this rate I'll have nothing left to post in a couple of weeks).

Thanks, Glen. I appreciate the concern and characteristic humility with which you generally approach your fellow ABF players, despite the fact that your level of achievement is so much higher than many of us and what we might even hope to attain.
Nice job on Auld Lang Syne, Ladypayne! If I didn't know better, I'd swear you were doing Piano Magic. You sound like a lot of the student's do there once they get going with their by-ear arrangements. You seem to have a natural ability to know how to go about it. Love the variety of effects in your arrangement!

This is a piece by Alberto Ginastera. The work is a tonal one; however, it does take tonality to its limits. It is a wonderfully tragic little piece. I hope everyone enjoys it in spite of its somewhat small and disfigured exterior.

That's after quite a few hours of rehearsal - not instant. The tune I knew, of course. The sheet music I had. I just needed to review the chords (and change a few - sheet music is often a bit odd in that regard and sometimes completely wrong), get the right key and keep running through it.
You might also notice there's huge chunk missing (ie. the solo, which is completely beyond me).
It's not very fluid yet but I was pretty pleased with its progress and figured I'd test myself by recording it. It took quite a few takes to get one with only a few minor slips in it.
Well before the piano bar goes on the next page I thought I would post another song:P I just watched Schindler's list a few weeks ago for the first time. It was a very good movie, and I loved the music!:P So Anyways here is the Theme song from Schindler's list.

Um, is this a good place to post videos for newcomers? I've been on the piano for the last 3 months, and I just did a recording of Innocent by Joe Hisaishi a couple of days back to show to my friends on facebook. I started off with a keyboard, then moved onto a DP after much deliberation (my interpretion was played literally 5 days after the DP was delivered and roughly 14 hours of practice on the "new" DP...with occasional breaks like sleep, food, work and such ) Hopefully, with the guidance of everyone here in this forum I can improve my piano skills, though to be honest I pretty much feel that I've lots to learn and I suck at this point

Very good. One thing must improve: The recording technique. There seems too much bass.

Elssa~ A fine rendition of Stella by Starlight - love the whole note device you used! You gave Cabaret a very nice bounce
ppp~ loved those dense voicings - they really thicken the dark melody line of that little beauty. Well done!
Augustina~ I remember when I first heard that pretty theme from Schindler's List. You play it very caringly and sensitively
Saucermancer~ Welcome to the February Piano Bar! With 14 hours of practice, you played your first piece very well. As you play it more and more, the piece will be well under your fingers and you will be able to keep a steady tempo. Good job!

Actually, I was doing tempo rubato for the piece...and it wasn't my first piece either (well, it is the first for my current piano, though ). Will have to get better recording equipment so that it sounds better; I tried recording it on my netbook out of pure laziness, but the audio and video quality's pretty bad, compared to recording with my digital camera.

Thanks, Glen Not sure what you meant by "whole note device", but I did use a whole tone scale/run in "Stella".. I like to play that sometimes in dreamy-type tunes.
Out of Gas had a nice cool, jazzy sound. What types of jazz chords/scales were you using with that one?
Enjoyed your Estranged, too - really like that funky DP setting there.
Hi Elssa~ Thanks so much! The first one, Out of Gas, a blues oriented improv, I used inverted augmented ninth chords, minor chords with major sevenths, minor sixths, augmented fifths, half diminished chords and dominant sevenths. Some of the scales correspond to the chords and some don't very much.
Oh,,, The term, 'device', refers to a crafty scheme or special purpose.
Glen
