Hi all, I'm a newbie we just bought a 1952 (I think...) Baldwin Hamilton 242 for very cheap - it's in pretty good shape, all things considered. I am curious to know what the differences are between a 242 and a 243 of that vintage - can't seem to find anything when I do a search. thanks!

Hi MP, and welcome to the Piano World Forums!
I noticed that no one had responded to your thread, so I thought I would get things started...
I honestly don't know the differences between the Baldwin/Hamilton 242 and the 243. I figure I can't be much... can you post a picture of it? How tall is it?
Maybe some of the experts will chime in with some info.
Congratulations on your new-to-you Baldwin 242!
Rick

Lets see....243 minus 242 = .....1 ha haa
What does the cabinet look like? the 243 is a school model with toe blocks supporting the keybed, double wheel casters so it can be rolled around. The lid and fall board are often locking as well. Baldwin made other cabinet styles with essentially the same design inside and named them 245, 246, and others I've forgotten. If your cabinet is more for the home than the school, it likely has the same design as a 243 with a different cabinet.

thanks for the warm welcome!
It looks to be a very basic cabinet - but not locking, so probably was targeted to the home market.
It hadn't been tuned in over 10 (!) years when we first looked at it, and yet it was still in tune ... gotta LOVE those Baldwin Hamiltons. Such a big sound.
