I have a question for piano experts....I bought a 1956 steinway 1098 upright piano from a neighbor who is moving for $800......The piano has not been restored, all original parts, but im only second owner.......I inspected the piano using Larry Fine's guidelines, and the piano seems to be in good condition for its age.....no soundboard cracks, frame cracks, the bridge's are not cracked at the pins or pulled apart from the soundboard, neither are the ribs, tuning pins all same length, minimal rust on strings, no spliced strings, etc......but the hammers do have some wear and are yellowish, aslo some of the bass felts look pretty worn and the action is covered in dust and has a lot of coleration on it.....It had not been serviced/ tuned for 10 yrs, but is still in somewhat decent tune ( no double pitched notes, and sounds ok with my pitch machine).....My question is this.....what is the value for a piano this age with out restoration, and 2nd question is....what would it cost to restore it, and is it worth it?????Thanks.....

It is definitely worth tuning, and if you can find a good technician to tune it, that person can answer all your other questions.
I bought my first Steinway upright for $650 when it was about 60 years old in the mid-1970s, restored it and sold if for $4000. I doubt if you could do as well with this one, but it probably does not need as much work, nor would it be as difficult to do.

Not sure, what needs to be restored? It sounds like you got a keeper at a great price.

I want to keep the piano for myself, does it matter that the hammers and felts/ action parts are discolered, will they last if the piano is being played everyday, if it is serviced? Thanks.
