Dear All
I'm new here. I hope if any one could give me more opinions on the topic.
I have finished my LTCL, and am going for FTCL in Nov/Dec 2012 or Apr/May 2013, though I am a 40+ years old (yes, it'll be a tough journey). My technical skill is not crazily superb, but I think I have a reasonably good music sense. I can practise about an hour every day (at best) as I have a full time job.
For the exam programme requirement of 42-48 min, I am thinking of the following (and have started practising): Bach - Partita No 6 in E minor (without repeats) Hindemith - Piano Sonata No 3 (On a seperate note, are Glenn Gould's interpretations of them fairly authorative?)
The above two pieces will add up to 38-40 min, and I still have 4-10 min. Which of the following will not too difficult? Better to go for one or two of them (to make the total number of pieces to be three or four in the programme)? Grainger - In Dahomey (c. 4 min) (Tentatively my favourite) Schumann - Toccata (without repeats) (c. 4 min) J. Adams - American Berserk (c. 6 min) Debussy - Prelude 'Feux d'artifices' (c. 4min.)
By the way, is Bach generally a dangerous choice in exam? Is a Beethoven sonata a hidden requirement? I haven't learnt and played seriously on Beethoven's late sonatas, though I am fine with the earlier ones (but they aren't on the syllabus).
Any other suggestions are most welcome and appreciated. To give you more about my background, I passed my LTCL last year by 100% self-learning. My final programme was: Mozart - Rondo in A minor K511 Prokofiev - Two pieces from Romeo & Juliet (I picked vi and x) Bach - Prelude & Fugue in E flat minor (WTC Bk 1) Ravel - Sonatine which was quite different from my original starting pieces.
This time, probably I'll find a teacher to brush up, once I fix the programme and am more familiar with the pieces. Luckily I don't have any tight timeframe for me to enter the exam, perhaps Noc/Dec 2012 or Apr/May 2013. I just want to achieve something, as I enjoy piano since I was young.
For sharing, recently I've learnt from 3 people who are also preparing for their FTCL, and their tentative choices are:
Candidate A Beethoven - Sonata 30 op 109 Liszt - Dante sonata Debussy - Feux d'artifice *************************** Candidate B Bach/Busoni - Chaconne Beethoven - Waldstein Sonata Ravel - Gaspard du nuit *************************** Candidate C Beethoven - Appassionata Sonata Chopin - Andante spianato et grand polonaise Debussy - Feux d'artifices ***************************
As (back-up?!) alternative, I may be able to equally do: Bach - Partita No 6 in E minor (w/o repeats) Chopin - Andante spianato et grande polonaise Stravinsky - Serenade in A
A better programme than Bach + Hindemith + TBD?
Thanks a million for any constructive advice.
