Sorry James for not replying - Just noticed your message Punching in , is that because i messed up a couple of songs live, i had to re record the audio and lay it over the top ; There was no way i was going to re record the whole thing 20 minutes it! That was my third take and the best yet- with only a couple of mistakes. Hope that clears it up - Says on the video in the text obvious points where it happens! As for prompting i had a scroll text track on the laptop (Which you can see in the video) with the name of the song, and a few quick notes to make sure i got it right - like button to press or length etc Took a bit of practicing and alot of frustration but i think it was worth it

Thanks for the info Pij! I dunno though, perhaps I'm in a cynical mood this evening... but watching the clip more closely, the sound I'm hearing doesn't always marry-up with the key's you're playing. For example, the Brian Adams tune at 2:50 (first clip), the last chord you play sounds like a rolled arppegio, but your hands are playing the keys simultaneously, as they do for the previous parts of the tune. Then the Top Loader tune that follows immediately after, there are a bluesy little crushed note/grace notes that I'm hearing that your fingers don't appear to play. Perhaps those two tracks are examples of where you 'punched-in' the audio? As for prompting i had a scroll text track on the laptop (Which you can see in the video) with the name of the song, and a few quick notes to make sure i got it right - like button to press or length etc Sounds terrific. What software did you use? It must have been difficult to get the timing of the scroll text to stay in sync with what you were playing. Again, I apologies for coming across as a moany old git, but watching this video seems to give me an I just can't scratch. Cheers, James x

Hey, Paul. That was epic (in the true meaning of the word)! I've never seen anything like this in my life! I enjoyed it so much, I'm gonna have my wife watch it, too! "Jump" and "Forget You" for the win!.
I'm curious how you came up with the list. If you do something like this again, can you put it in chronological order so it is a truer "history"?
Note: If you video record future performances, you might try to remember not to sniff/cough/count/whistle or do anything else you can't hear yourself doing because of the headphones! Also, don't point out your mistakes so much (e.g., a couple wrong bass notes) -- they might not even get noticed by your audience! [Full Disclosure: I only started playing the piano myself this month...]
All in all, an A+ undertaking!
[By the way, Matlock: Muse was represented with "Starlight," song No. 4]

Cheers , some really good advice in there . To put the 100 together , I started of compiling famous ones I knew already- a few obvious ones.
Next , I thought logically of famous big Bands that had keyboard or piano players in them And looked in to which songs I could cover .
But the biggest way , was keeping a note pad with me And listening to classic rock and pop radio stations; Every time a good riff or piano intro was on , I joted it down.
Glad u liked it and hope ur wife does too ; I agree about a bit More order ; maybe shorter videos of the 60s ,70s, 80s and 90s make sense ?

I totally understand you being a little bit cynical james - my first post here, and alot of questions needed answered. At the end of the day, i just had so much fun making it, i wanted to record it, even if it became a labour of love at the end. I see from your profile you work with Kawai You know, have never tried them but hear really good things about them . Are you more of a piano or a keyboard player? or both probably by the look of your position. Anyway if you have any vids would love to see- or anyone else for that matter. Cheers again

Piano_Pij, I totally understand you being a little bit cynical james - my first post here, and alot of questions needed answered. I'm not really too concerned about how many times you've posted to the forum, I'd just prefer that you're honest, that's all. At the end of the day, i just had so much fun making it, i wanted to record it, even if it became a labour of love at the end. Well, I think the music in the video sounds really great. I see from your profile you work with Kawai That's right - 8am until 5pm, Monday to Friday. You know, have never tried them but hear really good things about them .[quote]
I'd like to believe we produce a range of very competitive instruments, yes.
[quote=Piano_Pij]Are you more of a piano or a keyboard player? or both probably by the look of your position. Well, I grew up playing the piano (an acoustic upright) from quite an early age, and received classical lessons from a wonderful teacher up until my mid-teens. I found myself drawn to jazz and blues tunes rather than classic pieces, and also became more interested in keyboards, sampling, and creating music on my computer (an Amiga!). I was also fortunate to have access regular to the latest and greatest Yamaha, Technics, and Casio keyboards/digital pianos, and spent a fair bit of time reading through owner's manuals in order to understand all the arranger features - you could say that those early experiences helped prepare me for what I do today. Anyway, so I stopped taking music lessons, and more or less stopped playing the piano altogether within a couple of years - something I truly regret these days. Fast forward to a few years ago, when I somehow found myself playing keys with some other funk and soul fans. I 'acquired' a Nord Electro 2 and have subsequently purchased an Electro 3. My fingers have undoubtedly lost a lot of strength compared to my acoustic piano days, when I'd be bashing out 'Blue Rondo a la Turk', so, yes I'd probably say I'm more of a keyboard player than a piano player. However, I believe my musical 'sense' is far better these day, thanks largely to my deep passion for the music I'm playing. As you may have noticed from my profile, I don't currently own any Kawai instruments (although I do have an F-1 switch pedal connected to my Nord), however I believe that may change in the not too distant future. Anyway if you have any vids would love to see- or anyone else for that matter. I'm still really interested in this software on your laptop that scrolls info about the next song to play. How about a video of that? Cheers, James x

Well could post a video if you want but it would be easier (and more interesting) to just give you an idea of how i went about it. First of all i downloaded the audio editor Audacity - its free and can be found on google, by typing the word in - Its like a really simple cubase (which i used to use as a teenager when i thought my songs were going to make me rich! -they didn't ) I recorded all my takes (from previous attempts to do the 100 songs, with click track) so i knew how long it would last- i had 30 mins max on youtube. Then , from an earlier take (with lots of mistakes may i add:P ) i set up a text track to go along with it (where you can insert text, symbols , that sort of thing, which follows the earlier audio) . Once i recorded a really good take- i.e the one i posted(though as mentioned in the videos there were points where i missed my cue / hit the wrong note) , i used an earlier take to punch in - know it was exactly the same length. I think there for 3 or 4 occasions i did this - you will see me mentioning this on the video Still i think for 100 songs in a row, mainly working off memory that wasnt too bad - i wish i could have got it COMPLETELY off one take but i would have been there for hours and hours until i went mad! Because the sync wasnt great, and i had to match the audio record on the pc with the phone, i tried pinching and streching small sections of video in a program called Sony Vegas pro - a video editor my friend has. This helped me bring in to sync bits but put others bit out!! I finally just accepted that it was "good enough" after my friend started getting frustrated with how much time we were spending on manipulating tiny bits of video only to put other bits out of sync. It was never a commerical project just something i thought was great fun that i wanted to share!!! I am going to do some more smaller ones next , but this time i should get the technical parts right! Hope that makes more sense. P.s. Im jealous of all your gear! PJ
