What edition of Bach would you recommend for a student (me)?

I have the Henle urtext editions of AMB and Little Preludes And Fugues. I like Henle a lot, but not knowing a lot about Baroque performance practice I am looking for a supplementary edition that makes more suggestions: articulations, added ornaments, dynamics, fingerings.

By "added ornaments," I mean ideas of how to add ornaments e.g. in the repeats which I understand are to be played more floridly than the first time through (but correct me if I'm wrong).

Also, are there any editions to particularly steer clear of?

Thank you for any suggestions you can provide.

Take a look at the Alfred edition edited by Willard Palmer.

Thank you all for the advice. What is bad about Schirmer?

In simplest terms, there is no way of discerning whether what you see on the page is by Bach, or by a Schirmer editor circa 1900. And the myriad editorial suggestions are largely at odds with Baroque aesthetics.

So you're actually much better off just sticking with your seemingly naked urtext edition. Palmer's editions published by Alfred will give you the help you seek, though, and they're not too expensive.

Better would be to take a few lessons with a harpsichord or historical organ player.

Another option is the Celebrate Bach anthology published by Frederick Harris. It's a good middle-ground. There are fingering suggestions, but no phrase or articulation markings are added. Instead, the book includes very well-written notes on performance practice in an appendix.
