My technician boss guy finally explained why he doesn't like my piano's action and likes others better. Keeping in mind that English is his second language and I am just learning about pianos. He says my piano gets 1 repetition (is that per second or what?) and the best pianos get 2. He's now doing a very good job at convincing me to take his Lindeman player piano because it gets 1.5 repetitions. I have this thing for antiques and he would just give me the piano until I buy my new one. Does this sound right? Can you explain this action thing to me?

To be honest, I don't know what 1 or 1.5 or 2 repetitions are, but IMO, unless you are an accomplished pianist, repetion is a non issue on a piano that you don't plan to have for long, whether you keep, accept, or buy it.

Is it just me or does something smell fishy here?

(oh, I reread the original post, thought he was trying to SELL you one...)

He paid $400 for the piano and is offering to pay another $100 to get this piano delivered to me. Plus, he's got someone coming to help him fix the player part. He really doesn't like my piano and wants my son to have something better to play on.

I did some googling. Apparently the repetition is how many times you can strike without resetting the action. I think.

Well, I like the piano better than my own. I think the player is the neatest thing ever. It's free and at the rate things are going (I still own 2 houses.), I may be waiting a long while before I buy that new piano, so I told my tech friend I'd take his piano after he gets the player fixed.

I kind of think "fishy" too. He paid $400 for the piano, wants to deliver it to you for FREE. And, what does he get out of it? Nothing? Nobody stays in business for long that way. My first thought was, deliver it and then suggest a $$$$$$$ worth of work that needs to be done on it. Rather than him paying to do that work on the piano himself, maybe getting someone else to do it by offering a free piano... Maybe I'm all wet but, something doesn't ring true with that to me.

No, he services my piano for free. Perhaps it's a ploy to come to my house and hang out with my family? He's the kind of guy that'll give you his shirt if he thinks you need it more than he does. He wants my son to have a better piano.

Yea sometimes when we see a scenario posted on a website and we can easily jump to conclusions expecting the worst and looking for an ulterior motive, but we often forget that there are some good people out there who would gladly give up an "extra" and cheap piano to a friend so that their son can play on something that they otherwise could not afford.
In fact I did pretty well the same thing with an old piano I had (although I'm not a tech or tuner) because I had no need for it anymore and they really needed a piano but couldn't really afford one.
Everybody means well on here christineka and in our desire to protect somebody from some possible unknown ploy we may go a bit overboard in our suspicions at times.
If it sounds like a good temporary free loaner piano until you can purchase one then that sounds like a good gift from a generous person.
