Speaking of competitions, is anybody going to the Sydney International Piano Competition in July?

Wow, that's come around quickly! Have 4 years really gone by?? shocked

I usually listen to it all on the radio, doing 4 years' worth of accumulated filing and sorting as I listen. smile

Yes, I can't believe that 4 years have gone by either. Time flies! frown I usually listen to it on the radio too. Just this week I am ordering a new radio/CD player, so I hope my mini-system will be good because it will be on for hours and hours in July. laugh

It is interesting. The repertoire requirements are sort of odd:

"Any concerto by Mozart (except K. 459 or K. 503), Beethoven (except No. 5), Brahms, Schumann, or Dvorak (Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini has been removed as it is not in the public domain and is therefore not eligible for this competition)"

Well, none of Rachmaninoff's concertos are eligible either!!

Too bad they didn't leave it open for any public domain concerto - who knows, somebody out there might have a fantastic Hummel A minor ready to go.

A bit strange, yes.

Maybe the PSO is performing those that are excluded during its season and doesn't want to duplicate a concerto. As far the Rach/Pag who knows?

I did a double take at the name .... PSO concerto competition.

I can't imagine playing a piano concerto on a PSO. smile

Rach/Pag is copyrighted. (So you can't legally put it up on YouTube and the orchestra would have to rent parts.)

I thought that might be the case, too. So I went and checked, and sure enough, the Beethoven and Mozart exclusions are all programmed in their next season.
