OK, I am a newbie, with that being said I am about 68 pages into Larry's book, I have read about others reading the book and their comments. I was interested in it, I got in on amazon, and the supplement should be here anytime. Anyway, I received the book after I had visited four dealer in the area, I have one more to go visit before I start the process. I will also finish the book and supplement before I visit again. After reading the first few chapters, I felt a lot better about what to ask and what to look for when I go back. So much of what he says in the book is really true, I had one dealer tell me he stripped the outside of a Boston piano and made it more of a matte color and less glossy, when I went to look it up on line, I found the used piano he was talking about came that way from the mfg. I really like the guy, but I don't know why he would say that? I will give him another try but will be more skeptical when dealing with the dealers. Plus, It will help them as well, I will know more about what I am looking for and I will know how much time I will take to look at everything I have my mind on. I really like it when they leave you alone to see and touch, the pianos, And, the book has already helped me to ask better questions, which I am writing down. ( I am sure they won’t like that) The best part of the book for me, is when he is talking about the techs, I now understand how important a relationship is with these people, I hope to find a good one here. Thank you all for the forum and the knowledge you share.

Thank you, I knew I was over-looking something? Value, I would like to find the best value for the money...I plan on using it for a very long time, and having my son use it as well, I would trade up I guess If I needed in the future, but I am more of a person, that will over buy a little, so I don't have to buy again later.
Upright, As far as the Piano goes, I really like a nice mid-range sound, some sound like tin, and I don't like that, I really don't want to have to play hard to get a nice sound out of it. Budget I have different price points I would look at between $4-8, Thank you for the suggestions.

I'd also say that if you are sure the dealer lied to you, I would not go back to give the individual a second chance. There's no need for that sort of behavior by a dealer, and you'll never be fully confident in anything else they tell you.

I have had very interesting responses from dealers after mentioning that I read The Piano Book. Especially surprising was a Yamaha dealer, who pretty well discounted the entire book. I thought Larry Fine was especially positive about Yamahas.
Makes you wonder if these people have actually read the book, or just ‘heard about it.’ I think it's an excellent reference for anyone who is interested in pianos, especially those whose livelihood depends on them. Maybe some just don’t care, they just want to spin a piano onto you. Thankfully, I encountered very few of those.
