This one is on the Pianoworld CD but I found I had never written it out. Thanks to Pianostreet's "perfect_pitch" for very quickly picking up what I was playing enough to trigger my recall. Recording (today): Elegance on Federal Street Score: Elegance on Federal Street

An enjoyable piece, reminding me of Billy Mayerl. Has his fame reached wherever you live? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_MayerlNot too sure about the final chord. It seems to belong to a different harmonic world from the rest of the piece. Might it be more readable in 4/4?

Thanks for the link. Fancy Mayerl being threatened with expulsion from music school for playing his own music. I didn't know that. At least some things have hopefully changed for the better since those days.

Ted,
For whatever it is worth, that is a very nice little piece!
As Mr. Exhaulted points out, the computer generated score, while it might be faster to notate, gets in our way. It obviously does not "comprehend" a swing feel in 4/4, and I am not certain why C# appears as an accidental in E major. None of this detracts from the piece itself, fortunately.

Thank you Ed, I am pleased you like it. Unless it is very simple, writing intuitive, improvisational rhythm in a way that somebody could unambiguously play the intended effect without a recording is not easy, or at least I have never found it so. Professionally printed music either uses dotted quavers and assumes this "dotted note" convention implies triplet rhythm, or uses straight quavers (eighths) with a written instruction to "swing the eighths". Most transcribers of the great stride solos use the latter. Those ways are fine for simple music, such as this piece, but if different rhythms are employed, either consecutively or, worse still, simultaneously, everything gets very messy very quickly.
I have always been inclined to try to write the best approximation I can think of regardless of conventions or how peculiar it looks. Although I wrote an enormous amount out in earlier years I am not particularly good at it. The time aspect makes me bad tempered. A few seconds of improvisation takes an hour to write out, and then the rhythm is approximate, during which time I could have played and recorded hundreds of new ideas.
