I never thought I would be that guy to have a lap top on my keyboard at a gig.

I am straight old school
modules is as far as I thought I would ever get.
until I began really searching for a mks20 module and realized that even if I did score one I wouldnt want to take it out on a gig.

so I began looking for samples to load in a keyboard

then I looked for other keyboards that could emulate the mks20 sound

I came to the realization that pound for pound loading the sounds into kontact or reason or exs is the best bet

lets look at the advantages of using your laptop to trigger sounds at a gig

size your laptop takes oup the space of one rack unit when colapsed
once opened you can run about 5 keyboards easily
without any sound loss.

can anybody recommend any good gigging synths that would work in this paradigm so far I am running pianoteq alicia keys pianoteq has the electric piano add on and I am considering getthing the rock piano add on for that clearere and cleaner attack.

much appreciated

you can layer for days
and control your patches relatiely easily

I have an mbox2 and I will be using that as my interface.

my first gig will be this week

I look forward to really bringing some good sounds to my gig.

I was thinking about bringing my laptop to gigs as well and use VST instruments. A while back I actually did this because I needed some synths and organ sounds. At first everything was going smoothly. After a while everything stopped working and I had to ditch my laptop and stick with the sounds in my DP. (Now I'm thinking of buying Nord Stage 2 smile

So my worries using vst is reliability. I hope you have better experience on your next gig than I did. Let us know how it went!

maduro - have you seen this? Don't know what your master keyboard is but at least this shows that a decent sample can be done of the wonderful MKS-20 (well, sounds very promising from this YT posting anyway).

yes i have seen that in fact I already own a sample of mks 20 for motif
the problem is they dont sound as good as the claim
I recently had a real mks20 module in my studio and there was a big difference in warmth, presence, head room.
however there is also not a lot of wiggle room in the motif as far as a sample set is concerned
which is why i am looking to get one for Kontact
by either precision sounds or Gospel musicians.
bigger sample library and better sounds overall

I dont bring my board out. because I ride a motorcycle so I need something very portable.
the laptop route is going to be the way to go

the interesting thing is I dont have a real side by side comparison of the
kontact libraries to know which one sounds better

precision sound sounds good but they didnt sample with the chorus
which is what makes the ep patches sound so great

truly once you have a strong mks patch you can combine it with just about any patch and it will sound great.

as far as the other poster who mentioned reliability
I believe that was always my concern
but I will be running my laptop with mbox2 which I have never had a failure with. I dont foresee anything hinky happening

but you never know right?
