Yes, but some folk that would listen to it may not want to download, for various reasons.
If you put it up on youtube, you could then post it up here witha direct link , and no one would have to fear downloading something!!

I think you would get more listens..

just an Idea.

Dazzie2, I think that sounded great, especially for only 5 months playing! And by ear, to boot!

I have a couple suggestions. Try to play through your missed notes, it makes for a smoother sound. And just lighten up a little on the left hand so that the melody sings out. Very good first recording.

If you can convert the midi to mp3 and then upload to boxnet, it would be much easier for a lot of people to listen. I have no problem downloading to listen, but some may not want to.

Great! Inspired me.

I never find any wrong note. Its a variation, or impression of Amazing Grace. If must to give a name to the wrong notes, I would like to call it
The Perfect Wrong Note!!!

Because I get tired of clearing stuff out of my downloads folder. Thus I tend to roll my eyes and click off to another destination when sites want me to download files which I have no reason to want to keep around forever. It shows much greater web fluency to make such things viewable/payable via the browser.

That said, Box.net does offer the ability to make audio files playable via the browser. When people use it, I listen to their files. Otherwise, not.

Indeed, me. and Tangleweeds sometimes when his download folder gets full. Also, the first link took me to a login page, the second link provided didn,t.

If I had found a way to play rather than download, I would have.

I can also assure you that this is also the case for others, and can provide links to previous posts where others are also reticent to download...

As an example someone uploaded a link to mediafire on PC corner, this tried to open up an instance of partypoker.com AND a dating site when I tried to download the music,

The music was then uploaded to a better destination.

Its better all round to just be able to play the music rather than download.

Forgot to mention, the original poster has now edited his first post so that it has the same link as the second post, both of which work as they are the same.

the first post he made did not have the same link when he posted it, As I am sure he will attest to.

MIDIs used to play in browsers, but this seems to have become a past-tense technology (perhaps on grounds of technological abuse. Remember the horror of GeoCities sites with rainbow-colored flashing text and auto-playing MIDI background music?)

Hang on Mike, your missing the point a tad dude, are you seriously suggesting I download a thirty day free trial of notation composer, and also download a midi file of someones music, and then have two extra things on my desktop I dont really want?

I allready work in Abelton and reason, playing a midi file is not a problem.

It would be easier if folk stick there midi file into a simple program that has reasonable piano software and export it to youtube as a wav or mp3 or mp4?

That way, many folk can just have a listen without downloading anything.

Well, posting a MIDI file of a performance has some advantages. You get the music notation for the song. Comes in handy if it's not a public domain song. cool

It obviously is a problm, or you would not be repeatedly complaining about not being able to open a MIDI file without downloading it.

The answer to this question is no, it would not be easier. To begin with, it would mean that Dazzie would have to go through one more step. Secondly, it would take many times longer to download the mp3 to the temporary folder. Thirdly, the mp3 would contain far less useful information for those of us who might like to provide useful feedback to Dazzie. All the way around, it is just much better to have Dazzie upload the MIDI.

But why would I WANT Notation Composer, when I have Sibelius?

If I really really wanted to listen to the MIDI, my Mac informs me I could download QuickTime 7 to listen to it. A telling detail: the current version of Quicktime is 10. Apparently Steve Jobs put an end to playing MIDI files in his browsers long before he died.

I am not very good when it comes to technology and the internet but I find it very interesting reading , secondly I recorded in midi because that’s all my piano allows me to record in , I would have put it on “ you tube” but that wont let me upload midi so the only way would be to convert or buy something that will convert midi to mp3, well at this point in time I don’t see the point I only put my recording up for fun if people want to listen to it or not >

Dazzie, I downloaded your file and listened. No problem, heck it's only 6.7KB, downloads in a couple of seconds.

I can't understand why anyone would have a problem with that.

I don't understand why it is so hard.
Just click on the MIDI file, and when the dialog box appears, select 'Open' and the file should play automatically in Windows Media Player (PC users only).

So to recap, instead of one person taking the extra step, ALL the folk who want to listen have to navigate away from Pianoworld and figure that there is a way of just listening rather than downloading?

Instead of just clicking "play" right here in the thread, as a youtube video allows you to.

And as for my ability to demonstrate this is the case, I think if you check RST you may find that I have demonstrated the ease of listening to music posted in a thread directly on many occasions,
as have many others, and I have personally helped folk to do just that, it really isn't rocket science.

My apologies to everyone for continuing this AWESOME THREAD, but now I'm intrigued...

Rostosky, do you have a Mac? I'm wondering if the issue here is that Quicktime (which functions as Windows Media Player for Macs) quit supporting MIDI files several years ago.

Steve Jobs was notorious for arbitrarily deciding that he didn't like a certain technology and then removing it. For example, Macs quit having floppy drives a couple years before everyone else did.

ETA: I also have a Mac, thus I also find MIDIs nuisancey.

Not true. Macs still play .mid (midi files) in Quicktime Player in Leopard 10.5.x
In Snow leopard 10.6.x one needs to install QuickTime Player 7.6.6, its on the Install Disk.
For Lion OS X 10.7.x there's a separate install of Quicktime Player 7.6.6 on the Apple website.

Hya tangleweeds, No, I am running win7 not a mac.
Thing is I am very carefull about where and what I download full stop, and having to check out can I trust a site first is a pain!

However, my point was really that its easier to just click "play" on a thread like this say:

Than to navigate away, decide if you want to download ( or not if it is playable there now)

and then clear from the desktop or download folder as you say.

Dazzie2, dont worry, just like your original link, only those who come here to find the link can listen, this is NOT public on youtube !!!

Also, I am sure you will want to let us listen to more of your music in the future, so if you want to know how to post it here like I have done say, just PM me and I can walk you through it..

Like I said in the first place " it was just an Idea"

Did you not see his previous post where he explained? He doesn't have the software to convert midi to mp 3and youtube will not host midi files.

The software is gettable free SJoe. See previous post for the word "IF" "if you would like to know how to do it" a thought for the future, an offer of a free walkthrough. Optional. just an idea.
To be taken or left. etc. Awesome, as has also been said. lol.

Re Quicktime:
So installing Quicktime 7 on top of the current installation of Quicktime 10 doesn't mess things up? When I tried to play the MIDI my Mac offered to install Quicktime 7.whatever but I abstained, having had problems in the past as a result of "downgrading".

Rostosky, I do still entirely agree with your bout not wanting to download indiscriminately, though for me it's really a housekeeping issue. I always forget to throw such items away after listening, so my downloads folder soon gets clogged with all sorts of opaquely-named files, and clearing it out becomes a long slog of viewing/listening to each one to figure out wtf it is and whether I want to keep it.

I totally understand Tangle weeds, my point was that I genuuinly believe Dazzie2 would get many MORE views having it directly on the thread, so folk could just click and play.
I was basing this of previous conversations, posts, pms where folk have said they are put off if taken to a download OR, what they think is a download..

I was hoping to increase the amount of views.

I also have a pc full of extraneous stuff if I am not carefull!!! lol.

Your ability to facilitate "ease of listening" does not concern me in the least. It is your ability to ignore information which is contained in MIDI files which concerns me, and it concerns me very much.

49 posts and you appoint yourself ABF grammer policeman?

There are rules for ending sentences on a preposition, I followed them.

If I was you, I would be much more concerned about early retirement from the grammer police on mental health grounds.

So after all that, does anyone have anything to say about Dazzie2's performance?

You could say something about it.

Hopefully the attempted "awesome" will get him more views!

Dazzie2, you have been playing for five months and learned that by ear no less. Based on that, I'd say, your performance was excellent. You are definitely well on your way to becoming an wonderful pianist. thumb

I have not said one word about your grammar, nor have you succeeded in demonstrating that I have a mental health problem.

As the above quote shows, you quoted me and then wrote out my sentence again yourself and added the word "do" at the end of it.

Thus trying to correct grammer that was not incorrect in the first place, If you cannot remember doing that, let me help:
It was yesterday.
Demonstration over.

Dazzie2,
I am glad to hear that you wanted to upload to Youtube in the first place.
I thought this might be the case, and am more than willing to help. If you pm me I will be more than happy to walk you through the process.
The "added" benefits are great, you get to see how many views you have had, and where those views are in the world.

By the way, I liked your playing and its allways nerve racking to put your first attempt for public viewing, well done.

what sort of DP did you play it on?

I cannot remember doing that because it never happened. What happened is that I duplicated your thought in my own words. However, now that you have brought up the subject of your grammar, I probably should mention that although I do not recall seeing you make any grammatical errors, you do make a large number of spelling errors. I can show you those errors if you like.

Since you obviously value the process very highly, why are you wanting to keep it a top secret?

Thank you for finally commenting upon Dazzie's playing. I myself have already commented, though I have to disagree with you about the "nerve racking" issue. I personally know of no legitimate reason why a first posting should be nerve-racking. On the other hand, I think that this discussion, in-itself, is an outstanding example of how a first-posting can certainly be made to be nerve-racking.

I presume that you are referring to a Digital Piano.

Edit Reason: ACCIDENTLY INSERTED THE WORD "BLAH" BECAUSE I WAS THINKING OUT LOUD AS I TYPED.

There is no apology. There is only your own increasingly irrational behavior, which does not hurt me in the least. In a previous post, you suggested that I had a mental health problem. Now you seem intent upon demonstrating that you yourself have a mental health problem.

There is no need to keep apologising Mike, really. I have accepted your apology, and am prepared to put it all in the past.
To keep on apologising may make you sound not too genuine.

Have you filled in the form allready? that was quick!! I only sent you the link just over an hour ago.
Anytime would have done, there was no rush.

Mike, now that we are best friends again, and seeing as you have been kind enough to invite me to the party you are having, May I just take this opportunity as your friend to mention How much I too love the words "demonstrating" "demonstrated"

I am not quite as fond of them as you are, I have, to my shame, only used them 16 times in my whole life, and do admit to also using the words "showed" and "exhibited" "manifested" "displayed" as alternative vocabulary..
Allthough I personally would not think of using this word in every post I did ,

Would you mind awfully if I too used the demonstrating word in other posts? I would credit you every time I used it and would not try and make out I thought of it first or anything like that.

Anyways, I fully expect you will be busy making your own gestures of good will towards me, and I have therefore posted this picture for you to enjoy in the meantime.

This is a picture of me watching telly when I have mental health depression with arguing on the internet with folk that have just joined a forum and got arsey.

I hope you notice that I had to go to the trouble of turning the telly on its side so I could see it, lifting tellys is not easy with depression.
