Hello, I have this brand, Fukuyama and Sons. I am trying to find out where it came from and its history since I can tell it's quite an old brand...I think. The keys are ivory. Anyone has any information on this brand? Thank you so much.

Well according to the Piano Atlas, one of the first places to look for a piano name, Fukuyama us another Japanese piano maker, independent of Yamaha and Kawai. I don't know whether they are still in business. The Atlas gives serial numbers in the range 23500 through 330000 for the years 1960 through 1965. That may have been the only time this company made pianos or it may not be. Obviously if your piano has a serial number in this range it was made at that time, in Tokyo, Japan.

Thanks so much, David. Yea, I thought it was a Japanese brand. Now, I presume that The Piano Atlas is a book?

The Pierce Piano Atlas is one of the essential sourcebooks for information on pianos, in this case, old pianos. It is published exclusively by Mr. Larry E. Ashley, PO Box 20520 Albuquerque, NM 87154-0520. The current edition is available in hardcover or softcover for between $25 and $35. Most technicians carry a dog-eared copy with them to look up the particulars concerning some old piano they are called in to tune.

I just bought a Fukuyama & Sons "Rosen". The man who tuned it had went to college for 4 years to learn how to tune, repair, and build pianos. He went through a 4 year externship, and has been tuning pianos for 40 years now. This man seems very smart and knows his stuff. When I asked him about the Fukuyama brand he said that they bought out (or into) Steinway and Sons. When I searched this out to see if it was valid information I couldn't find this in black and white, but I did see where one of the companies that bought out Steinway, had some pianos manufactured in Tokyo, Japan. Interesting . . . it may just be true. I may have a piano equivilant to a Steinway but without the fancy name!

1. This thread was initiated in 2001.
2. What Japanese company bought out Steinway?
3. There are piano factories in Tokyo? I know there are elsewhere in Japan.

Methinks your tuner might be pulling your leg...
