I am happy with my 8 year daughter's piano teacher and my daughter has made good progress. Her teacher does teach ear training but only as separate course. Our time and money are a bit limited so I’d like to work on ear training with my daughter. I’ve come up with a few ideas to do ear training with her but it would be nice to have a more “tried and proven” course of study. Any recommendations for ear training methods that are child oriented?

Thanks!

I've used the "Sound Advice" series in the past for ear training combined with theory. It's designed to correspond with the various levels of the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum, but it works great with students who are not pursuing that course of study as well.

There are lots of listening examples on their website so you can get an idea of what the books are like. Go to- http://www.soundadvicedirect.com

Kudos to you for realizing the importance of developing a good ear in a musician's overall development!!!

I taught my son with Celebrate piano, which incorporates ear training along with everything else. The method teaches songs for each interval. As a high school student, I was taught intervals by associating them with popular songs.

If your daughter's teacher does ear training on the side, I would bet that s/he would be open in giving you ideas on what to do with your daughter in that direction. Most teachers like families who are involved and want to do more, and are happy to help. It also has the advantage that the teacher knows your daughter.

My teacher used to play a game with her brothers - they'd play a note while she wasn't looking and she'd have to guess what it was. She was about 5 or 6 and developed perfect pitch (except the piano was tuned a 1/2 tone flat!).

I've been doing this with my daughter for a few years now and her pitch is very good- much better than mine smile
