Just me and ten kids young enough to be my grandchildren - or maybe even great grandchildren...
I'm going first - don't know if that's good or bad. Mendelssohn Song Without Words 53/5 "Folksong".
Then later in the program I am accompanying my wife Laurie in the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria (recorder and piano).
This will only be my second recital - last summer I played in an all-adult group.
I'm hoping for the best - but my confidence is low.

At least your doing it! I'm too chicken to even do a recital. That's nice you and your wife will be doing a duet.
“The doubters said, "Man cannot fly," The doers said, "Maybe, but we'll try," And finally soared in the morning glow while non-believers watched from below.†― Bruce Lee

Sam, why would your confidence be low?
Remember that at recitals people really are on your side and rooting for you all the way.
You play beautifully - you might be a bit nervous, but you'll do a good job.
I think it is really lovely you're playing with the kids AND playing a duet with your wife!!!
Enjoy yourself!!

Just enjoy it and forget about being nervous ... umm, ok so perhaps impossible but do try to enjoy it anyway!

Sam, I've seen the videos of you and your wife playing - and of your SummerKeys performance. You exuded confidence there and I'm sure you will tonight, too. Good luck! I know it will go swimmingly!

Break a leg, Sam. You will do fine. Everyone is rooting for you. While I have the opportunity, I want to really, really thank you for this recommendation in another thread a while back... I cannot recommend this book highly enough: "The Musician's Way" by Gerald Klickstein. Although I'm not quite to the end of it yet, this book has already changed the way I look at music and the piano. It is by far the best I have read on the subject of learning to become a pianist/musician. Thanks and good luck at the recital, Jim

Best of luck Sam. You must be just a bit nervous since this event hasn't even happened yet. Just remember to go in full of confidense and I'm sure you will do fine.

I'm with CMohr - I also watched your duet and SummerKeys videos and thought you positively wreaked of confidence and talent.

Thanks everyone for your well-wishes. Your positive thoughts must have helped, since I did OK. Not great, but not a train wreck either. The start was shaky, but I got better as I went along.
I was very impressed with the kids. The youngest were 5 and 6, the oldest 17. Some of them had just participated in the MTNA competition the week before so they were at their best - playing two pieces from memory. The star was a 7th grader who had won a big award - he played Mozart and Kabalevsky.
The kids were fearless, or seemed to be. They lack the experience to know when to be afraid!
My teacher also played a Chopin Mazurka, which sounded perfect to me. I'm really lucky to have found such a good teacher.
Afterwards we had a reception with cookies and milk!

Bravo! I'm glad you had fun, and what a treat to play with Laurie! I really liked those videos, too.
Can't beat cookies and milk, either.

Congratulations, Sam! I'm sure that the "shakiness" was infinitely more noticeable to you than the audience. And I'm envious of your cookies!

Good on you....
it is really one of those things similar to the adage:
"if all your friends were as hard on you as you are, would they really be your friends?"
Most of the audience members that will actually take the time to "judge" you are usually musicians that have a little empathy for the position you have put yourself in.
Good on you! Music is a language that is meant to be shared and it is a pointless pursuit without these kind of interactions.

Congratulations, Sam! I admire anyone who can get up in front of an unknown audience and play. It sounds like everything went very well for you! Great job!
