Welcome to Piano World. I hope you find your keyboard soon and get started.

Maybe you'll be able to make a recording of your playing and singing for us.

Welcome, Jonny. You will find plenty of support for new learners here in the ABF. Also, if you have questions about digital pianos/keyboards - makes, models, features, costs - there is a Forum where those issues are addressed.(just click on "Forum List" up above)

Good luck in your new piano adventure.

Jim

My taken name is Jonny Panic. I rarely use my given name outside of paperwork. I'm 36 years old, married to a most excellent woman, and I have Graves' Disease... which is nowhere near as bad as it sounds, but does mean I have tremors and have a hyperaware attention span and mild sensory hypersensitivity, so florescent lights and the like just kill me (figuratively speaking).

I used to be homeless or semi-homeless (since my teens), and during that time taught myself to sing using a trusty auto-reverse cassette Walkman, earbuds, an assortment of tapes ranging from INXS, U2 and Tears For Fears (whose B-side track Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams inspired me to this name long before I reassociated with computers. Yes, I know Sylvia Plath has a negligible publication of the same name, and no, I have no interest in it) to Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden, and long days spent drifting from state to state from 1993 till 1999, when I finally settled where I am now.

I live in northwest Indiana, just the other side of Gary from Chicago, and I'm a Fraud Analyst, which job bores me sometimes and make me long for the days when I used to unload trucks and build and repair grills, bicycles, furniture, exercise gear and similar for the likes of Sears, Wal-Mart or Lowes. Yes, I do know some people want to slap me for saying as much. I used to think I was into computers, but... well... I was when I was 16, and I'm not really now.

At this point, I've decided to take up digital piano because A) I've always wanted to play something, B) the DP is versatile and I have a hankerin' for not just piano sounds like the Pumpkins' "Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness" or Moby's "Rushing" but also the clav a la Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and a couple other great sounds, and C) I've lost some fine motor control in my extremeties due to my change in profession two years ago and my Graves', and my doctor thinks this is a wonderful idea for rewiring said motor control.

That being said, I'm a complete newb currently in the market for a piano to begin with. I've lost interest in a couple of other time-consumptive hobbies and have plenty of time and energy to devote to this... which is good, because I love music more than just about anything, and would like to make more of it.

Hi all, my name is Russell, I am almost 40 (arg) and have been learning piano since early this year. My family was always piano orientated, parents and four sisters all went quite high in their grades, but I was a bit of a handful as a kid so they decided not to put me through, probably a wise decision, I was an impatient kid, now I am just an impatient old man...lol

I have a wife and 3 kids and the younger two are learning piano, so I am learning with them, we all go to lessons on Saturday morning. They will most likely do prelim and grade 1 exams at the end of this year, I have just sat my grade two exam and am waiting for the results, the examiner didn't yell at me too much so that is a good sign !

I decided to learn properly as I really enjoy playing the piano and I want to be able to play some nice songs, mostly the usual stuff - Fur Elise, Clair de Lune, Humoreske, Minute Waltz... and so on in the classical side

I also like some of the more contemporary stuff, Yiruma, Jessicas theme from the Man from Snowy River, I love the cover of Metallica's nothing else matters by Scott Davis, that is also on the wish list.

Currently going through the first of the grade three pieces, one down two to go. My teachers plan for me is to get all the grade three work done and then move onto grade 4 hopefully well enough to do that exam next year and skip 3. Will all depend on work/practice/life in general of course but you gotta at least START with a plan smile

Cheers.

Russell.

Hey, Russell, welcome to PW! How nice it is for your family to all go to lessons on Saturday morning! Your kids must look up to you; you're even a grade ahead of them!

Sorry, just realised I've never contributed to this thread. But given I ask questions & get helpful answers maybe I ought to...

I am 44, born and raised in San Diego CA. I moved to Britain age 24 & have now lived here almost 20 years. Mostly in Norfolk. I had specialist technical skills which allowed me to get work permits, and eventually residency/citizenship. If you Google my full name you actually get quite a few hits back from when I was a Uni researcher (blush).

I have 4 young children who suck up all my time & energy. Soon after I started having kids I didn't really have energy for a career any more, all the guys I used to work with were on 60+ hour weeks and are now (mostly) professors. I would now LOVE to have a job, just an ordinary job, not too many hours, & not just be a SAHM (not realistic for now, too many practical difficulties). I am a rabid pro cycling fan, keen on family history, and general scruffbag & Ecofreak.

Musical background none, really. Some people in my family play or sing, but I have no natural ear or sense of rhythm. I only started playing piano 5 years ago, after I inherited a beautiful upright Steinway and my son had lessons briefly; I thought me tinkering would make my son want to play. He soon gave up but I got sucked in. smile Finding the discipline to practise is very hard. I'm learning out of books, any sort of teacher would destroy my confidence.

All sorts of things you guys talk about go completely above my head. I don't feel (too) bad about that as I think I'm already absorbing as much info as I can.

Hi everybody,

I'm new around here and wanted to share a little bit about myself.

My name is Victor, I'm a web designer/developer based in in Romania, Europe and I'm turning 26 in a few weeks.

I remember buying my first digital keyboard (a very old and cheap yamaha) when I was about 19 or so but at the time I couldn't focus very much on learning and there weren't so many online resources as they are now

I sold it in a couple of weeks and since then I tried to learn the guitar, but again with no luck.

Things changed over the years, now I have a place of my own and at the beginning of 2011 I bought a M-audio keyrig49. I started to follow some youtube tutorials and I liked very much the result, and now I own a new Yamaha Psr-e413, an excellent keyboard for it's price.

Over the last half year I practiced around 1-2 hours/day. I am a self learner and managed to learn around 20 easy songs (I will post some videos as soon as I buy a decent webcam).

I can't read sheet music and I try to develop relative pitch, but it's very difficult since I didn't start playing at a younger age.

I'm looking forward to being an active member here and to become very good at playing the piano.

Cheers,
Victor

Hi Lain, yes it is a nice way to spend a Saturday morning. As for being a grade ahead of them I don't think that will last too long so I had better make the most of it smile I wont mind when they get better than me, that way they can help me with my stuff, lol.

Cheers.

My name is Dary.

I am NOT a piano player.

I try to play the piano. Sometimes music even comes out. Which kinda blows me away.

But I'm not sure if or when I'll ever actually consider myself a piano player. Though I would like to. I just don't want to embarrass myself.

Things I've been working on.

No quarter – Led Zeppelin
30 must have blues licks – Jonathon Wilson
Country Girl – CNS&Y (my take on it anyway)
'Round Midnight – T. Monk (Lot2Learn/Roger Friedman's cover/take)
Angel - Sarah Mclachlan
Mary had a little lamb - ??
That thing you hear at a baseball game just before they yell charge...
Dunt da dunt dunt... dunt da dunt dunt
Da da da dunt da da... Charge!! (Not the Da da da dunt da da part. The part before it.)

I took up playing in April 2011.

I've been playing on an old (and I mean old) Casio Tone Bank. But I just purchased the Yamaha YPG 235. Which is like stepping out of the dark ages or discovering electricity. What a difference.

Love the forum. It's good to be here.

Dary, welcome to the PW and congratulation for getting a new piano. I think you will have lots of fun with it. By the way, we are all piano players as long as you know how to make sound on the piano. This is not a forum for professional / accomplished pianits (although there are some here). So we don't test people to join the forum (LOL). If they did that, I won't be here. Feel free to set back and enjoy the ride here.

My name is Tsvetan, people call me Tsetso. I'm 22 years old from Sofia, Bulgaria. I started playing the piano a couple of months ago though I've liked piano and classical music all my life. I still remember the Stokowski records my father played for me. I've always expressed some aptitude for music but I never had the chance to own a piano and thus make the first step of playing. My mother died when I was about 11 years old and that left my whole family in ruins including me - clinical depression pretty much since then. I work a job that I hate. I have no friends and I dropped out of university. Grim story BUT remember I started playing the piano which is a tremendous step for me in my stupid little life. The reason I'm sharing this is that my involvement in music has given me a bit of confidence and therefor I think I owe it to myself.

That aside, I think that this is a really healthy forum. It's humane - quarrels about pieces, about practice methods, about lesson prices etc. Sometimes you can feel the warmth of people even through the digitized repesentation of the alphabet letters, sometimes you can feel the frustration and agony. Thank you for letting me be part of this community.

Hi wuxia, and Welcome.
Sometimes life can be dificult and I'm not going to comment or do a deep analyse of your story because I may not be able to do it.

Anyway, I think we must be proud of loving music. And if you like music I think you can take advantage of this fact to light up your life. Life is not boring, just needs a litle music. smile
C'mon, play piano, invite some close friends to hear you, hear their opinion, share it with us. Do not be in the "shadow"!
Good luck.

Hi wuxia, welcome to PW and the ABF.

Music has helped me overcome tough time in my life too. I came back to piano after a long break. I think it was one of the Chopin nocturns that did it. I still remember the sense of salvation I felt all over my body and soul. Life is good since then. Before encounter with music, I felt guilty of breathing the air that belong to someone else who are more worthy. After the encounter, I started feeling like every day is a gift from Heavin.

May you keep your music inside and on your fingers for many years to come. You are young and you will be pleasently surprised how much you learn. I would like to hear from you what pieces you are working on etc. People hear would love to share your joy and pain that come with learning.

Hey Wuxia,

Glad you could join us ... sorry to hear of your misfortunes.

Music also helped me overcome depression when I was very young.

It has been the spiritual center of my life ever since.

Music to me is a language that cannot be used to lie.

I wish you great success in your musical ambitions.

My name is Margaret and I live in south eastern part of Australia in the state of Victoria. I live in the Yarra Valley about 70km from Melbourne in the mountains.

I am 62 years and have taken piano up again after 40 years after doing it at school for 10 years. I am amazed that I can still play after all this time - amazing how so much of it is etched in the brain - but play slowly as yet. I have lessons with a wonderful teacher who is a Bach scholar - I love Bach.

What I am learning now are 3 Bach 2 part Inventions (1,4,7) and a Beethoven Sonata (Opus 49 Nr v2) - as yet I can play these only very slowly. But I am just loving the piano - what is great is that I am now learning to listen rather than just play notes and get timing right like I did at school although that grounding was so essential.

I have worked in the computer industry for 40 years after doing philosophy and mathematics at university. My hobbies are hiking, literature and horse riding as well as music off course and I am also interested in astronomy and have some telescopes and large binoculars. I also have a beautiful German Shepherd dog - have had many of these.

I learned about this website while reading a book called "Grand Obsession" written by one of your members - from this book I also started to develop an interest in how pianos work - now I want to learn more - and maybe one day buy a very special piano. Right now I have Kawai K15E which is good for me.

Am looking forward to the virtual company of you all as you all seem to be a very knowledgeable and love the piano as I do - I think your site and forums are wonderful - and I have only had a quick look.

Margaret

Welcome to PW Margaret. Sounds like you jumped right back in with both feet. Good for you. We'd love to hear some of your Bach in the monthly Piano Bar or the quarterly recitals. There are a lot of very knowlegeable and helpful folks around here, so I'm sure you will like it.

Hello, my name is Chris. I've been looking to join a community that shares my new found passion for piano, so here I am! I am new to posting in these forums, but have come to this site from time to time over the last year to get advice on some piano related things but never really took the time to post.

Some info about me. I am 29 years old, a US Army veteran, and an avid techie. I make a living working as a computer systems analyst...enough said about that.

I've been playing piano for a few weeks shy of a year now and my goal is to become a professional pianist. When people hear this, I usually get a litany of negative responses like, "Your too old" or "The competition is too great" or some other excuse they use to not achieve their dreams. Don't get me wrong, I am well aware of the odds and I am not talking about being a virtuoso or a world-renown concert pianist, just a professional pianist. I have enrolled in my local community college's music program, taking Theory and Applied Piano lessons (as well as composition lessons) and have been practicing at the very least 4 hours every day (with the exception of a few days in the year where I did not have access to a piano). Because of this, I have gone from barely being able to play "Mary had a little lamb" when I started, to intermediate-lower advanced (admittedly not that smoothly) pieces, as well as all major, minor scales and arpeggios (4 octaves). I will continue to study here until I can be confident I will pass a university audition at a respectable school and continue on through my Masters.

I am looking forward to being an active member of this community and hopefully I can learn from the wisdom of those who have traveled the road I am currently walking.

Currently Studying:
Chopin - Prelude Op. 29 in E minor
Bach - Invention no. 4
Satie - Gymnopedie 1
Tchaikovsky - June Barcarolle
Ravel - Pavane Pour une infante defunte

Follow your dream - I don't think you're too old. Heck, I still think I can do it at some level and I'm 65 laugh
